PACKERS-LIONS POST-GAME NOTES & QUOTES
- Today's paid attendance was 70,019.
- With a first-quarter completion to Robert Ferguson, Brett Favre set an NFL record by reaching 3,000 yards passing for a 14th overall season, breaking a previous tie with Dan Marino (13, 1984-92, 1994-95, 1997-98). He needed 9 yards passing coming into the game to reach the mark.
- Samkon Gado's 171 yards rushing were a record for a Packers rookie and the seventh-highest total overall. According to Elias Sports Bureau, John Brockington held the previous record. He rushed for 149 yards on Nov. 14, 1971, in a 3-0 loss at Minnesota. Gado tonight posted his third 100-yard rushing performance of the season, finishing with 171 yards on 29 carries. He is the only rookie other than Brockington (four in 1971) with multiple 100-yard games.
- Gado's 64-yard touchdown in the second quarter was the Packers' longest play from scrimmage of the season. It marked the third-longest run ever by a Packers rookie - Paul Hornung (1957) and Ralph Earhart (1948) share the record, each with 72-yard runs. Gado's run was the longest rush by a rookie in 48 years, since Hornung made the 72-yard carry in 1957.
- Gado moved to No. 3 on the Packers' all-time rookie rushing list, moving past Bob Monnett (413 in 1933), Cecil Isbell (445 in 1938) and Kenneth Davis (519 in 1986). Gado currently has 537 rushing yards on the season.
- Gado now has sole possession of the rookie record for rushing touchdowns. He previously shared the mark with Brent Fullwood (1987) and Gerry Ellis (1980), who each had five rushing scores in their respective rookie seasons. Gado currently has six rushing touchdowns.
- Donald Driver extended his streak of games with a reception to 61, establishing the second-longest stretch in Packers history, formerly held by current running backs coach Edgar Bennett (60). Next up is all-time leader Sterling Sharpe (103).
- Antonio Chatman is now No. 2 on Green Bay's all-time punt return list with a current career total of 101 punt returns. He surpassed Al Carmichael and Phillip Epps (100 each), needing one coming into the game to capture the ranking. The franchise leader is Hall of Famer Willie Wood, who racked up 187 from 1960-71.
- The Lions' second-quarter field goal block by Jared DeVries marked the first time a Packers opponent has blocked a field goal attempt since Marc Colombo of the Chicago Bears accomplished the feat on Oct. 7, 2002, in Champaign, Ill.
- The Packers tonight played their 28th franchise overtime game. Including a 2-1 record in sudden-death playoff games, the Packers are now 12-12-4 all-time. These teams had played three overtime games previously, Nov. 20, 1983 (Detroit 23, Green Bay 20); Oct. 11, 1987 (Detroit 19, Green Bay 16); and Oct. 29, 1989 (Green Bay 23, Detroit 20).
HEAD COACH MIKE SHERMAN:
(on what his mood is after this win) "Cold. My mood is cold. I'm very happy, I 'm proud of the guys. I thought there were a lot of things in the ball game that didn't go our way early, that this time of year a team that's not in the playoffs, we've all seen that happen where they just kind of let it happen and they didn't. We talked about before we took the field, our priority was they were a bunch of fighters, I knew they were going to fight tonight. The goal line stands I thought were key in the ball game. William Henderson's catch on third down in overtime was a critical, critical play in the ball game as well. The running game really came around and we were able to move the chains a little bit."
(on why they could run the ball so effectively) "I think we're getting better. Samkon (Gado) has improved week, by week, by week and I think he's beginning to prove he's not a one time wonder. I think he's seeing things better and it's an acquired learning process. Certainly, he hasn't played a lot of football necessarily, but I think he's improving. He's certainly not the finished product just yet, but he certainly made a statement today."
(on what Gado was thinking on the end zone fumble) "He told me he did throw it forward, but he was outside of the box so they couldn't rule it intentional grounding. If he knew he was outside the box it was a heads up play."
(on why this victory was so important) "We have been in every ball game and obviously everybody's aware of we haven't won nearly as many as we would have liked to. I wish we were playing in the playoffs right now, but these are our playoff games, it's all we have. This was the first round of the playoffs for us and that's why it's important, it's the next ball game."
QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE:
(on Gado's performance) "I thought he played a hell of a game. I thought he played great last week too. When guys get the opportunity, like a Sam Gado, some take advantage of it, some don't. I think he's making the most of his opportunity. He just had an outstanding game."
(on why this game was important) "You know what? They're all important. I think people who have watched this team this whole year, we only have three wins, but I think they can honestly say we've given everything we've had. There's a lot of satisfaction in that. This team does not quit and easily could have quit at any point this season. With all the injuries and adversity and ups and downs that we've had, that win seemed as big as any other win that I've had. That's what special about this game. If individually you look at it that way. You don't have to be fighting for the postseason every game for them to be special. We would love to be preparing for postseason, but that's not the case so we have to make the most of the games we have remaining. And to be honest with you, that's as electric as I've seen our fans in quite awhile. I don't know if you guys could feel it too. I don't know if it was the cold weather, alcohol, a mixture of both or what, but it was a lot of fun and I'm glad we came away with a win."
(on if he made a conscious effort to play more conservatively) "I play the game the way I always play it. I've gone into every game knowing I have to play a certain way based upon our personnel. I think the biggest difference today is we didn't have to rely on the pass as much because we ran the football well. It enabled us to kind of pick and choose some of our passes and not be as much of a gambling, passing team. We were in the game for the most part the whole game. We ran the ball well enough, we just picked and (chose) what we wanted to do with passing."
RUNNING BACK SAMKON GADO:
(on if he surprises even himself with his production) "I don't know when it will end. I hope it doesn't. I mean I think expectations I've set for myself even after I've surpassed the ones that weren't set, just keep being broken. It's obviously a team effort I think. If you look at some of those runs, there were some I wasn't even touched but it's really humbling to be a beneficiary of all their hard work."
(on if he's getting used to the weather) "I don't think you ever get used to playing in this kind of weather. But it's not as painful as it was at first."
(on what part of his game he feels he needs to improve) "There's so many, the list is long. Obviously pass protection you can never be there and ball security, I think you're never there. I obviously had an issue with that today. And running routes, precision, depth and just making plays. There's a lot of times when it comes to running routes it doesn't exactly pan out like you draw it on paper, so just adapting to what the defense is giving me. So those three things."
KICKER RYAN LONGWELL:
(on the maximum distance he could have made the game-winning field goal) "Going into the closed (north) end zone, the max distance was 43 yards. The wind was tough. You could tell with the punts and the kickoffs, the wind was tough that way. The other way we were going 48. We were within range, obviously."
(on whether the possibility of kicking the field goal on 3rd down as opposed to 4th down was discussed) "We had talked about it, but they wanted to get it to the right hash, which is a little bit better kick for us. They did that on third down, and then we kicked on fourth. That's why we set it up on third down."
(on the blocked field goal) "I haven't seen it. (It was) a good snap and hold and a good kick. That's all I know without seeing tape."
DEFENSIVE TACKLE GRADY JACKSON:
(on the defense's goal line stand) "They were running right at us and we just stuffed it. We had to go out there and toughen up on fourth and inches. We played great in our stance down low and got off the ball to make the play. That's the play you are looking for. You have to look for that, because if they get in there, they are going to make you look bad. We wanted to look good. That's what people look for in a run-stopping nose tackle."
(on if we were surprised the Lions tried a sneak) "I was surprised. It was a shocker that they came right back with the quarterback sneak. I don't know what they were thinking. I have to give my hats off to (Cullen) Jenkins and Colin (Cole). The played good and got a lot of push. Kenny (Peterson) at end, Kampman...hats off to the d-line."
WIDE RECIEVER DONALD DRIVER:
(on what the win means) "It's a good feeling in the locker room. It's a good way to try and finish up the rest of the season. We have three games left, and if we finish 6-10, that would be great."
(on his feeling when the safety was called) "We have to get the ball back and score. Plain and simple, that's how we felt. It just happened that it was overturned, it went to overtime and we made the plays we had to make."
(on getting breaks to go the Packers' way) "It's a big win for us. We feel good right now; everybody is laughing and joking. This is how it's supposed to be. It felt good to have the ball bounce our way this season. We just hope it continues for the next three games and maybe (things) bounce our way again. The biggest thing is we have to carry the same momentum we came into this game with. At the end of the game, we had momentum going our way. If we go into the next three games like this, I think we'll be successful. It starts right now with Baltimore (next week)."
TACKLE MARK TAUSCHER:
(on his holding penalty near the goal line) "Stuff happens, I guess. The rule is stated, and that's how it played out. The refs were very thorough in what they were doing. Obviously, it was a good thing to happen. We ended up converting and getting it out of there. No harm, no foul."
(on what the win means) "You play to win. I think (NY Jets coach) Herm Edwards said you play to win. We are out here trying to win. Obviously our season hasn't gone the way we wanted it to. Nothing beats winning. We still can finish .500 at home. Granted, it's nothing we wanted to do in the beginning of the year, but you reassess your goals. Now our goal is to try and win out and we have a good vibe getting out of here."
DETROIT LIONS HEAD COACH DICK JAURON:
(on the controversial call that took a safety away from Detroit) "The safety was obviously a huge play and a huge part of the football game. I have never really seen a call quite like that. The way they explained it is that it turns out that it was a forward pass, and because he (Samkon Gado) was out of the pocket, it doesn't have to be to anybody, it just has to reach the line of scrimmage. I was told that the holding didn't occur in the end zone. That was an interesting turn of events."
(on his fourth quarter decision to go for it on fourth and goal) "If we had kicked a field goal, we might have won it in regulation. We had confidence that we would score and if we didn't we felt like we would have had them backed up and the defense would make a play. I think they did make a play."
(on Detroit's inability to score in the red zone) "We have to get it in; you obviously have to score seven. You aren't going to win kicking field goals. It doesn't happen in our league. We will just keep working on it. That is all we can do, but it is very frustrating for everybody."
DETROIT LIONS QUARTERBACK JEFF GARCIA:
(on Roy Williams' dropped ball in the fourth quarter) "I think that he had an opportunity to be one on one with the safety if he makes the catch, but that is just one play in sixty plus minutes of football. There are other times in the game where I am sure where we can pinpoint each one of us being accountable for making a mistake that cost us an opportunity to get the ball in the end zone, so it is just one of those things. I know he would love to have that one back, but that is just one play of many that we had opportunities to make tonight and unfortunately we didn't make them."
(on how hard the Packers played) "Records aside, they are a better football team than what their record indicates. They have playmakers and they have a big time playmaker in number four and he seems to rise to the occasion in tight games like this. They made plays when they had to make plays and they found a way to get the win."
DETROIT LIONS WIDE RECEIVER ROY WILLIAMS:
(on what impact he thought the officiating had in the game) "It shouldn't have come down to the officials. We should have pushed that ball in (on the fourth and one). We should have won this game 20-10. But it didn't go that way. I let my teammates down. I let myself down. I know I am a better player than that."

**
Samkon Gado with a 64-yard TD (the longest of his career) took sole possession of the rookie record for touchdowns. Gado (six) entered the game sharing the mark with Brent Fullwood (1987) and Gerry Ellis (1980).
The 64-yard TD is the Packers' longest rush of the season.
