PACKERS POST-GAME NOTES & QUOTES
- Today's paid attendance was 69,757.
- The Packers in 12 of 15 games this year have outgained their opponents, including today.
- Brett Favre made his 100th career start at Lambeau Field, where he is 78-22 (.780). Including a 7-2 mark at Milwaukee County Stadium, he is 85-24 (.780) all-time in home starts.
- Favre started a 220th consecutive game, extending his NFL record among quarterbacks. He also played in a 222nd straight contest, the league's longest active streak excluding kickers and punters.
- Having already completed passes to a career-high 17 targets coming into today's contest, Favre moved the mark to 18 by connecting with Rod Gardner. His previous career high was 16, in 1998.
- Antonio Chatman's 85-yard punt return for a touchdown was the first kick or punt returned touchdown in his career and also the longest return of his career. The last Green Bay player to return a punt for a touchdown was Allen Rossum, Nov. 4, 2001, vs. Tampa Bay, a 55-yard return.
- Chatman moved to No. 3 on the Packers' all-time punt return yards list, surpassing Phillip Epps (819) and Billy Grimes (834). Chatman entered today with 818 and now has 908.
- Donald Driver became tonight only the fourth player in Packers history with three career 1,000-yard receiving seasons, joining James Lofton (5), Sterling Sharpe (5) and Antonio Freeman (3). He needed 4 yards coming into the game and finished with 107 yards for a current total of 1,103 on the season.
- Driver has a catch in 63 consecutive games, the second-longest stretch in franchise history behind Sterling Sharpe's 103 (1988-94).
- Driver tonight surpassed No. 7 Paul Coffman (322) on the team's career receiving list. He entered tonight with 317 career catches and now has 323 receptions. Next up on the list is Max McGee (345).
- Long snapper Rob Davis played his 150th consecutive game. His streak ranks third on the team, behind Brett Favre (222) and Ryan Longwell (143). Davis' streak began when he played for the Chicago Bears in 1996.
- Running back Noah Herron scored his first career touchdown, a 1-yard run in the second quarter.
- Tony Fisher has established single-season career highs in catches (42) and receiving yards (303). Fisher's previous highs were 38 receptions and 277 yards, both in 2004.
- Fisher posted a single-game career best with eight receptions. His previous high was seven, at Chicago earlier this month (Dec. 4).
HEAD COACH MIKE SHERMAN:
(on problem with Ryan Longwell) "The wind was not a factor in any of the missed kicks. I know the ball was spinning as they put it down on the first one. The second one I don't know."
(on Brett Favre's play) "Anytime your quarterback has four interceptions, you have to look at that. I do know this, he did give us a chance to win there at the end. On the interception for a touchdown, he had a guy in his face and it got tipped. The linebacker made a great play and obviously that was a significant play in the game."
(on why they didn't win despite outgaining them) "We didn't score enough points, I don't mean that facetiously. If you don't get points, it becomes irrelevant whether you had more yards or first downs than they did."
(on the play of Rex Grossman) "I have a tough time knocking any quarterback like Kyle Orton. He was their guy that they won a bunch of ballgames with. Grossman did a fine job tonight. He made some throws that maybe we didn't see the last time we played them."
(on the decision to onside kick) "They were getting to about the 35-yard line on their kick returns. We felt that going with the 'pooch' kick was the right decision because they ended up getting the ball only about ten yards farther up anyway. We felt that having a chance to recover an onside kick was a good tradeoff."
WIDE RECEIVER DONALD DRIVER:
(on whether he believed the Packers would score on the final drive) "Once I caught that ball, I thought I was gone. I saw (Nathan) Vasher and I thought I could cut across the field, and there was (Brian) Urlacher - too many guys to try and beat. If you get the opportunity at the end of the game, and once the ball is in Brett's hands, we feel like we can win the game anytime."
(on the Chicago defense) "They have a great defense; I take my hat off to them. But we gave a lot of plays away today. But if we make some of those plays that we gave away, we would have won the game."
(on having six backups in on the final play) "That's why you have so many people that play in the national football league. You just have to step up and when you get the opportunity to make the best of it. With (Robert) Ferguson going down, (Andrae) Thurman stepped up and made some plays. Regardless of who's in the situation, you still have to make plays."
GUARD SCOTT WELLS:
(on the interior blocking) "Not good enough (and) too much pressure. It caused a lot of errant throws. (Favre) took some unnecessary hits, especially with the last two sacks to come at a crucial time. (The blocking) just wasn't good enough."
(on if backup lineman effects chemistry) "We knew that that was the way it would go down if something happened, that I would move to right (guard) and (Ruegamer) would move to center. Because the whole time I've been at left (guard), he's been the backup center so he was used to it. It was a move we should have been able to make fluidly. Obviously, we had some difficulties."
(on making the aforementioned moves against the Bears defense) "It's tough and they had an excellent pass rush. When we got behind and had to throw the ball, they really pinned their ears back and brought some heat on us. We didn't do a good enough job picking it up."
CORNERBACK AL HARRIS:
(on the play of Rex Grossman) "I think he played well. He was dropping back pretty deep and it took the up front guys a little longer to get to him so he has a little more time to get the ball off. But I think he made some good decision on the throws he made."
(on whether he would have liked to blitz more with a new quarterback) "I'm comfortable with whatever coach calls. It really doesn't matter. As long as we get to man up, I'm comfortable with it."
(on the momentum swing to hold the Bears on defense and to not score at the end) "It's always good to make the plays to have hope, which we always have. Like I say, when the clock says 0:00 and you have less points than them, nothing else matters."
KICKER RYAN LONGWELL:
(on his missed field goals) "I know we had a good pregame and just couldn't transfer it to the game. They're big kicks that we should have made. They didn't go through, obviously. We should have made them."
(on having a new holder) "It's a factor. We had two days to figure it out, and I thought Ryan (Flinn) did a pretty good job in those two days and we had a pretty decent pregame."
(on Ryan Flinn) "I thought he punted the ball great. Imagine the nerves of your first NFL game on national TV in Lambeau Field in December, and against the Bears on top of that. I thought he handled the punting part very well."
(on whether he is having a difficult season) "I've always had great snappers and great holders and great protection. You know that it takes all 11 of us to make the kick, especially the three of us with the snap and the hold and the kick. For whatever reason, we've had a tough year with that. I thought if I put my self worth into what I do on the field, I'd obviously be disappointed. But thankfully, I keep football in the proper perspective in both the successes and the failures."
PUNTER RYAN FLINN:
(on his expectations) "Bartending is just a job. If I was an advertising guru, it's still 'The Packers pulled an ad guy off the street." I've been doing this for a long time, since high school. When I come out, my expectations are anything around 44-50 yards with 4.9 hangtime. I expect to be perfect and I work hard to try and be perfect."
(on his holding on field goals) "We tried to cram a whole offseason into a couple days. I was very confident going into the game. But sometimes, things don't go the way you want them to. That's one area I have to work on. A couple of the balls I couldn't get around like I wanted to. The first field goal missed, I will take responsibility for sure because I didn't stop the ball. The ball was still spinning."
CHICAGO BEARS HEAD COACH LOVIE SMITH:
(on the turnovers Chicago created) "The turnovers were big. (Safety) Chris Harris had two interceptions. I like the way that the defense finished the game at the end there because Green Bay had a little momentum going. It is tough to win on the road at anytime, especially when you are playing against a team like Green Bay with Brett Favre quarterbacking."
(on Chicago's first half offensive success) "That is what a team is all about right there. You never know what group will have to step up on any given Sunday. It was great to see the offense do that. It was good to see the defense finish the job at the end. It was a great team effort, a great team win."
(on if he has been surprised by the Packers disappointing season) "I thought they have fought back hard. I thought Mike Sherman did a great job of bringing his team back. They are out of the playoffs and look at the way they played today. I thought their coaching staff did a great job and I thought their players fought until the end."
CHICAGO BEARS QUARTERBACK REX GROSSMAN:
(on what the key was to winning the division) "I think the big thing is how well our defense played. We are ranked first in almost every category and anytime you have a great defense like that that dominates the other team, it gives you a chance to win no matter what you do on offense. When you add in a top-ten running game in the NFL, it gets a lot of wins."
(on the Bears downfield passing attack) "That was our game plan going in. We saw on tape that their safeties come down low for run support and we just used Bernard's (Berrian) speed and our protection to get a couple of plays downfield."
(on if he felt rusty in his first start of the season) "Obviously I think I would have been further along if I had played the whole season, but it is what it is and I went out there and tried to do my best."
CHICAGO BEARS LINEBACKER LANCE BRIGGS:
(on his 10-yard interception return for a touchdown) "It was a cover one, a simple defense. I stayed outside leverage as the fullback went to flat. I didn't think he was going to throw it. He threw it and I went and grabbed it and scored."
(on what it means to clinch the division in Green Bay) "It was big. This is Green Bay. I don't think I really need to say the magnitude of winning in Green Bay and clinching our division in Green Bay. This is the Packers, our biggest rival."
