PACKERS-BEARS POST-GAME QUOTES
GREEN BAY PACKERS HEAD COACH MIKE McCARTHY:
(on not taking advantage of team's possessions) "We gotta start fast. That is something we forgot to address in the preseason, and it came back and got us again today."
(on the play of the rookie interior linemen) "I thought they battled like I knew they would, and I thought they did a good job in the run game. We have to get them out there and get the experience."
(on inability to convert in short-yardage situations) "Our emphasis was on running the football today, and keeping it in third-and-short, third-and-manageable situations. We didn't convert on third down."
(on the success, or lack thereof, of the mutli-tight end packages run today) "To say that the run game and the multi-tight end package was ineffective, I just don't agree with that."
(on how much of the mistakes were self-inflicted) "I think most of it was self-inflicted. We don't design plays to have punts run back (on the team) for touchdowns, and we don't design plays for sacks to occur and things like that."
(on what he will take away from this game) "You learn more from the negative things that occur than you do from the positives."
QB BRETT FAVRE:
(on offense's poor performance) "I take a lot of the blame, regardless of the outcome of the game. We're young, and I know we're going to make mistakes, but I think I can play better than that."
(on his mindset going into today) "I have to admit, I was optimistic going into this game. I really felt that we could surprise these guys, surprise a lot of people. Maybe I was wrong, but I am very confident in my ability to lead the offense. Going into the season, I feel that I can be the difference-maker."
(on tight ends on the team) "If you go into the season with four tight ends, you would expect that you're going to throw to them more. I think that all four of our tight ends are very capable of making big plays for us down the field."
(on the talent of Chicago's defense) "If you're going to beat them, that's what you've got to do: you have to run right at them. They will not line up any differently than what you see on film. They know exactly what they're doing, and we do too. It just comes down to how do you block them? I don't care who you have - if they can rush four guys and get pressure on you, you're in trouble."
(on playing against very talented teams, such as Chicago) "You know sometimes that the odds are against you, even if you don't want to think that way."
(on team resiliency) "The good thing about a young team is that guys are resilient. By Wednesday, you'll think that we won the game."
(on whether or not he believes this is last season all over again) "We've got a lot of football left to play, and that could be good or bad. I hope we win some ball games, because otherwise it'll be a long season. But if not, at least make it fun. You know, compete at a high level, make some plays, and go down swinging."
(on the QB sneak run on the fourth-and-inches play) "There probably is kind of an art to the QB sneak, and it's been so long since I've done it, I've probably lost that art. I'm better off in space than I am in that situation."
WR GREG JENNINGS:
(On if it's a low feeling after an opening loss) "Anytime you go out there and perform the way we performed and have to come back in here and just know the other team is in there having fun. You look down and can't really enjoy the rest of the day."
(On what they can take from this loss): "Oh you can take a lot. We got to play them again. Of course they did a great job. They outperformed us in every aspect of the game and it showed. But you can learn a lot from games like this. Like coach always says, it's not as bad as it looks on film, but it's not as good as it looks as well. We just got to learn from it."
DT RYAN PICKETT:
(On the defensive performance and what it means going forward): "It definitely hurt and we have to look at it and go forward. Next week New Orleans is not going to feel bad for us, they're going to come looking to take a win. We definitely have to be ready. Most important thing now is we have to start getting better and better, we can't stay the same."
RB AHMAN GREEN:
(On if he performed better than expected): "I didn't expect nothing. I just expected to come out and play hard and whatever, how I feel after the game, so be it. I felt good throughout the whole game."
(On if he feels his 110 yards rushing is something the team can build upon as a positive): "A little bit. It's kind of bittersweet to have that, to still have 100 yards rushing but lose the game. You can find some sweetness in that, but not much. It's more of a sour taste in your mouth to lose to a divisional foe. You now got to do an up hill battle in terms of getting in the rankings. But it's a long road, we got 15 games. Before I even start talking about that, we're on to New Orleans."
LB NICK BARNETT:
(On how it feels to drop the opener to the Bears): "You know, it hurts, we wanted to come out this first game and win. Obviously it's against the Chicago Bears, a division game, I'm at a loss for words right now. We expected a lot more out of what we did. They made plays, we didn't make plays. We got to continue to grind, we have a lot of work to do."
OL MARK TAUSCHER:
(On if Jason (Spitz) and Tony (Moll) were a little wide eyed today): "You'd have to ask them, I think obviously we had a little success running the football but, from an overall standpoint, we did not execute up front as well as we needed to. That goes across the board."
(On how much credit goes to the Bears front four for disrupting the offense's execution): "You give credit to a team. When a team comes in and beats you, you give credit to them and I'm definitely going to. Going in, we knew they have a good front, but we felt like we had some stuff, that we were going to be able to do some good things. Unfortunately we didn't do enough good things to put any points up on the board today."
"I think we were able to do some things, but we never got into a rhythm. The rhythm was stopped by not executing on those third downs. Three third and ones and we don't get any of them, that's kind of the tell tale sign of why. If we keep the game close, you never know what happens. They kind of had their way with us. When we couldn't execute on those plays that kind of really turned the tide against us even more than it was before."
CHICAGO BEARS HEAD COACH LOVIE SMITH:
(on tight end Desmond Clark) "We have talked a lot about getting the ball to the tight end. I think I have been saying that since we have been here. We were definitely able to do that today. Desmond Clark has worked extremely hard in the offseason; as hard as anyone. It is just great to see him be that big a part of our offense. Hopefully we can keep that going."
(on his confidence in Rex Grossman) "Rex continues to show progress, and today he took another step. Rex is our starting quarterback. He is a good football player. I am anxious to see him continue to grow."
(on being the first team to shutout Brett Favre) "It is tough getting a shutout against anyone, but to get it against a team with one of the all-time great quarterbacks is special. It is special for our defense. The last time we played we didn't play as well as we needed to defensively in a game that counted in the playoffs last year. I thought the guys really stepped up today."
QB REX GROSSMAN:
(on his touchdown pass to Bernard Berrian) "We had a really good play action play that we hadn't used in the preseason that we pulled out and we got the safeties up for run support. As soon as I got my head around after the fake, I saw that the safeties were biting a little bit. You can't catch up to Bernard."
(on if he was concerned about the Bears offense in the preseason) "I don't want to talk about the preseason. I just want to talk about tonight. We ran the ball well and we threw the ball well. We were able to move the ball up and down the field on them, but I would still like to be able to finish some of those drives. That is going to be key in the upcoming weeks because eventually the other team will score."
(on the offense earning respect) "Anytime that you step out on the field is another opportunity to gain respect as a unit and I thought we did a pretty good job tonight, so we will see what happens next week."
CB NATHAN VASHER:
(on how the Bears offense kept the defense rested) "The offense did a great job for us as far as keeping us off the field and keeping us fresh. The offense did whatever they wanted out there and they converted on third downs, so it was very good to see."
(on if he was surprised that Packers ran so much in the first half) "We kind of understood that they wanted to come out and set the tone as far as being physical and running the ball down our throats. We went in with the mentality that we knew they were going to try that, we stopped them on third downs and fourth downs and basically anything that we wanted to do on defense. It was just one of those days for us today."
