PACKERS-SAINTS POST-GAME QUOTES
GREEN BAY PACKERS HEAD COACH MIKE McCARTHY
(on sudden sway in momentum late in the game, where Saints took 34-20 lead) "Sudden change is something that you coach for, you coach against, and we didn't handle it very well."
(on effectiveness of no-huddle offense) "No-huddle is intriguing, but if you don't watch it, you're going to do too much of it."
(on Favre's late interception) "I think Brett might have thrown it a little early, or Greg might have been a little late out of the break."
(on frequency of passing today) "For throwing the ball 55 times, I guess you can say it (the play) was adequate."
(on today's quick start to the game) "We had a big emphasis this week on starting fast, and I think we accomplished that, but there are some severe momentum swings through the course of the game, and we were on the short end of it in the second quarter."
QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE:
(on today's loss) "I can only hope and assume that the young guys continue to try to get better and to work hard. It's a tough loss, but there were some good things. You can learn so many things from this."
(on losing after the game's quick start) "We may not be in that situation too often this year, where we're up 13-0 at home. If we are, we have to find a way to close that out. Not to make excuses, but inexperience and youth is a big part of that, thinking that the game is over."
(on the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty called on Bubba Franks) "I didn't see what happened. I don't know what Bubba did. Referees make mistakes like all of us, and maybe he didn't do anything. Knowing Bubba, he hardly ever loses his temper or does anything to hurt the team."
(on whether the loss can be pinned on the young players) "The easy thing to do is to blame it on the youth and inexperience. I'm sure some people will do that. There are some plays I could have made, Bubba is an experienced guy, he could have made plays. (So is) Ahman (Green), Tausch (Tauscher), Cliffy (Clifton), and I'm just pointing to veteran guys, not picking on anyone."
(on dropped passes today, most specifically Bubba Franks) "I've always said this: When a guy drops a ball, I don't think he does it on purpose. I know Bubba had a couple of drops, and he spoke with the team afterwards. Bubba works hard. I get upset when I think a guy is not mentally prepared and that play may affect us in the game. But when a guy works hard and he makes a mistake like that, that's just part of the game."
(on Bubba Franks talking to the team after the game) "I personally know how Bubba prepares, and he made it sound like the loss was all his fault. And it wasn't, but that's the sign of a good player. I'll take Bubba any day of the week."
LINEBACKER A.J. HAWK:
(on the defense making plays, forcing turnovers) "At times we just have to stay consistent. We didn't get off the field every time we should have. We have to do it for 60 minutes. We can't just come out early and get it done, and then let off."
DEFENSIVE END AARON KAMPMAN:
(on taking away the positives from this game into upcoming contests) "It sounds like a broken record, but there are some positive things we can build on from this game. I think a lot of growth happened today, but in the end we didn't get the victory. We had them down early and we just couldn't quite put that last nail into the coffin. We let them back into the game and that was our nemesis. That's what we have to figure out. We started fast, which was something we were talking about all week and that was a positive. But we let them back in. That's the next step against Detroit; continue to start fast, especially in a hostile environment on the road. But then hopefully we can get up, get moving and keep it going."
WIDE RECEIVER GREG JENNINGS:
(on the positives of the offensive performance) "We definitely saw some improvement from last week. We made some good strides this week, but we didn't get it together. We didn't come together as a team and get the 'W' and that's what important. But we definitely have a lot of things we can build on and work towards improving upon the things we didn't do so well. From an offensive standpoint, we moved the ball pretty well and we definitely feel good about that. But when it comes down to it, we still didn't get the goal accomplished and that's to win the ballgame."
CENTER SCOTT WELLS:
(on if he felt confident that the offense was going to score on the last drive) "The whole game I thought we were going to come back and win. We were up 13-0 when they came back, they got up by a touchdown, I thought we were going to come back. Even when they were up by two I thought we were going to still come back and get it. We had the ball back with four minutes left. I definitely felt like we were going to move the ball and punch it in, tie it up, then win the game after that. We didn't step up and make the plays we needed to make, didn't do the job well enough."
HEAD COACH SEAN PAYTON:
(on coming back to win after turning the ball over three times in the first quarter) "You go a long time before you see another win after turning the ball over three times in the first quarter on the road. That is going against the numbers. Those are things that we are trying to clean up. Give credit to our players; they hung in there and battled."
(on the poise of Drew Brees) "He is a guy with a lot of poise. He wants to put his team in a position to win. He is very competitive and those are all the things that we looked for when we signed him. Drew has proven over the course of his career that he has been on the winning side more than he has the losing side, and that is what we look for in that position."
(on if he planned on his offense passing so much this game) "We started seeing more single safety defense and we got a lot of nickel on Reggie Bush, which we expected. I had said to the offense this week in meetings that they aren't going to allow us to hand the ball off 40 times, so we knew we would have to make some plays on the outside. It took us awhile, but we eventually made a few plays."
QUARTERBACK DREW BREES:
(on dealing with adversity) "I'm a believer and I always will keep the faith that things are going to turn around and get better because I know that as an offense and a team we work extremely hard and go about things the right way. If you do that long enough, good things are going to happen to you."
(on his touchdown pass to Marques Colston) "That is one of those things where you get Colston up on a safety and the safety at this point is a little scared because now he has his back turned and is just sprinting to keep up with Colston. I think that is a good thing for us and quarterbacks look for that situation where a safety has his back turned."
(on next week's Monday night home game against Atlanta) "I've never played in the Superdome before. I expect it to be absolutely crazy. It is crazy anyway - Monday night, first home game, we are 2-0, they are 2-0. Does it get any better than that? It is going to be awesome."
DEFENSIVE END CHARLES GRANT:
(on the Saints run defense) "That is all our defensive coaches talk about - shutting the run game down to make teams one dimensional. The last two weeks we have been able to do that. They hit us with a couple of runs, but we kept on doing good things defensively throughout the game."
(on what it means to start the season with two straight wins) "It means a lot for this franchise. Our football team has worked extremely hard in the offseason. Our coaches always stress that, and that is what we have been doing."
