PACKERS-CHARGERS POST GAME NOTES & QUOTES
3-0 RECORD SETS NEW FRANCHISE MARK
-With today's win against San Diego, the Packers have become the first team in franchise history to start 3-0 with all three wins against teams that reached the playoffs in the previous year.
-The Packers opened the season 3-0 for the first time since 2001.
FAVRE TIES ALL-TIME TOUCHDOWN RECORD
-With his fourth quarter touchdown pass to Greg Jennings, Brett Favre recorded his 420th career touchdown pass, tying Dan Marino's current NFL record. Favre came into today's game with 417 touchdown passes.
-Favre extended the league's consecutive starts by a quarterback record today, making his 240th consecutive start. Today's start ties him with Vikings center Mick Tinglehoff for the NLF's second-longest starting streak on record.
-Today marks the 38th game-winning comeback (fourth-quarter deficit or tie) of Favre's career, and his second of the season (vs. Philadelphia). It is the first time since 2004 (Dec. 24, at Min.) that Favre has thrown a touchdown pass to pull out the win. The five previous fourth quarter victories were won on field goals.
DRIVER NOW LAMBEAU FIELD'S ALL-TIME LEADER IN RECEPTIONS
-With his first catch of the game, Donald Driver surpassed Antonio Freeman (213 receptions) as Lambeau Field's all-time leader in receptions. Driver now has 219 catches at the historic stadium.
-The 5-yard touchdown pass from Favre to Driver in the second quarter was the duo's 36th career touchdown combination. The pair now stands third on the franchise's all-time list of TD combinations, surpassing Lynn Dickey and Paul Coffman (35 touchdowns).
-Driver recorded his 17th career 100-yard receiving game, which moves him into a three-way tie with No. 6 Billy Howton and Max McGee on the Packers' all-time list.
-Driver now has a reception in 83 consecutive games, the franchise's second-longest streak behind Sterling Sharpe's 103 (1988-94).
OTHER POSTGAME NOTES:
-Today's paid attendance was 70,733.
-Defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila tallied his first two sacks of the season. He needs two sacks to match Reggie White's franchise record of 681/2 sacks.
-Brandon Jackson scored his first career touchdown on 1-yd rush in the fourth quarter.
-Rob Davis has now played in 78 games at Lambeau Field, surpassing LeRoy Butler and placing him third on the stadium's all-time list.
HEAD COACH MIKE MCCARTHY:
(on how good this team is)
"We're 3-0. We're a team that's improving. We beat a very good football team today. That's an excellent home win."
(on the confidence of the team)
"It's a young football team in a number or areas (but) I think our confidence is real in a number of areas. I think it's building and it's a team that needs to continue to improve. That's our focus. It's something that we talk about all the time in our preparation and we'll continue to take that course."
(on why he didn't challenge the Donald Lee play at the goal line)
"I didn't really have a problem not challenging that one there. If I had to do it all over again I would have challenged James Jones' (goal-line catch). That's the one I wish I would have changed my mind on because whether he was in or not I think you've got to give your football team an opportunity to win the game and that was a play that could have changed the outcome of the football game."
(on whether Favre can keep playing at this level)
"I believe so and that's why the plan has been built the way it is. We're keeping him in very favorable looks and he's been very disciplined with the football. A big part of quarterback play obviously is decision making. I think these last two weeks he's been excellent with his decisions with the ball."
(on Favre tying Dan Marino's touchdown pass record)
"Every time he takes the field he's adding another log on the fire of such a brilliant career that'll continue to burn, hopefully for a while. He's a remarkable individual, he plays the game of football with such a passion so it's no surprise that he's breaking records and will continue to break them."
QB BRETT FAVRE:
(on the feeling of being 3-0)
"It feels great. I don't think too many people gave us a shot to be 3-0. I have to admit I questioned it myself. We're not playing perfect football by any means, but that's a good thing because there's a lot of things we can correct. We've still a long ways to go, but it sure is a good start."
(on whether this win proves the Packers are for real)
"It was one of those gut it out performances all the way around and I think people watching us will see that it wasn't a fluke...It's hard to luck into three straight wins like this. I think this team is pretty good or can be pretty good."
(on whether he was worried about missing their chance on the 4th quarter drive at the goal line)
"I was extremely concerned. I think everyone in the building was concerned that 'Man we just blew our chance.' I think that's human nature. We're not going to get down to the 1 (yard line) too many times...First-and-goal at the 1. It would be a shame if I was here talking to you right now and we blew that chance."
(on what it means to catch Dan Marino)
"I'm going to be totally honest with you, I'm so glad we won I could care less about that record today. It's like throwing that touchdown at the end, everyone's over there celebrating and cheering and congratulating me and I said 'Look, this will mean nothing if we don't win this game.' That's what it's all about. There's no better feeling than winning. Those touchdowns are great because they gave us an opportunity to go up and to win the game."
(on breaking the touchdown pass record)
"I would love to break it here and it would be great for our fans, but I hope that doesn't happen because we do play away next week. But I would much rather win. That's the more important thing and I believe that sincerely."
WR GREG JENNINGS:
(on being on the receiving end of Brett Favre's NFL record tying touchdown)
"It was just one of those plays where the corner was kind of pressed, kind of headed off to the outside. I knew he was coming to me, so I had to give him a little time, work the corner and everything else kind of played out to my advantage. He pretty much did the hard work, I just caught it and ran."
(on not showing any rust in his first game of the season)
"No. We got something to prove. Our wide receiver corps is young, with the exception of Donald (Driver), but he gives us great leadership. We're just coming out here trying to get better, week in and week out, day in and day out. We're trying to do that from right now on to the Super Bowl."
(on what it means to tie the record with Brett Favre)
"It means a lot. But at the same time, it's one of those things, that he'll be setting records from here on out now. It's one of those things that we're kind of used to around here now. I'm excited for him, and I'm just happy to be a little part of that legacy."
WR DONALD DRIVER:
(on starting 3-0 and setting the all-time Lambeau Field reception record)
"That's amazing. First of all to be 3-0, we haven't been 3-0 in a long time here. That's a great (thing) about this team. A lot of people told us we wouldn't be able to win. But we've proved a lot of people wrong. As long as we believe in ourselves in this locker room, we can beat anybody. And now today, we proved that. And to be the all-time reception leader at Lambeau, words can't even explain it. You've got so many great guys that have played here, from Don Hutson to Max McGee, Bill Schroeder, Robert Brooks, Sterling Sharpe, James Lofton, Antonio Freeman, the list goes on and on, those guys had great careers here. For me to be the all-time at Lambeau, I guess, it's shocking. I never thought to myself that I'd be able to accomplish this many goals. But I still got a long way to go. I'm hoping to set a record that Greg (Jennings) and James Jones and Ruvell (Martin) can't break, so I'm going to try to hold onto it for a long time."
(on if teaming up with Brett Favre is even more special today)
"Oh yeah, that's some great command. Greg (Jennings) proved it better than anyone. For him to take that slant all the way to the house, I mean, that's amazing. I didn't even block for him on that one. I had my hands all in and out that he was going to score. And for that ball to be the tie for the all-time touchdowns, he has one more to go to break it. And Minnesota, get ready, cause we're going to shatter that record up in Minnesota."
(on if he's going to lobby for the record-breaking ball all week)
"Yeah, yeah, that's my goal right now. I want it. Greg (Jennings) tied it, so I told Greg, "If you tie, I break." So my goal is to break it."
CB JARRETT BUSH:
(on if he felt the Chargers were picking on him today)
"Not really. I knew they were going to come at me. Antonio Gates, he's one of the best. He's going to make plays, that's all you can say about that."
(on having to cover Gates one-on-one a couple of times)
"He's a big guy. You just want to make him make his own moves, and just play his route. I mean, he made a nice grab on that third and three, or something like that, third and four."
(on Nick Barnett's interception)
"Oh it was huge. We were all exhausted, someone had to make a play and we got off the field, got the win."
(on being 3-0)
"I mean it's huge. This is a huge win. We got to take it and stay humble and keep working."
RB BRANDON JACKSON:
(on if there was any campaigning in the huddle to catch Favre's record breaking touchdown prior to his touchdown run)
"Well, I really wasn't thinking about it. I don't know what was going on. We were just trying to win. It wasn't about Brett breaking the record, it was just about us winning."
(on the offense not rushing the ball very much today)
"No we didn't. But good things happened today. All of our wide receivers, they were catching balls down the field. Running backs, we were catching balls. Everything was going good today, and we got the win."
LB NICK BARNETT:
(on others saying the Packers aren't for real) "Man we always thought we were for real. I'm not being cocky, but that's just our confidence in this locker room. We're just going to keep playing. They can keep thinking we're not for real and we'll keep doing what we do, keep playing football. Each team that comes in here, we'll try to win games, or wherever we go."
(on no longer being able to fly under the radar and sneak up on teams)
"We weren't worried about flying under the radar the whole time. Teams watching film, they see that we're out there playing physical, and we're playing football. And you have nothing else to do but to respect that as players. We're just playing football, we're not worried about being on the radar or off the radar. We're just going to win games."
(on if this is a statement game against a team that was a preseason Super Bowl favorite)
"I said earlier in the week, every game is a statement game. Every week we face somebody that has playmakers. This is the NFL. Some teams are better than others, but everybody has playmakers. We look forward to the challenge every week. We're not worried about being in a statement game, we're happy to come out with this win, it was a big win. We played through some adversity, being down in that fourth quarter and it was huge for us."
CB CHARLES WOODSON:
(on the way they won today)
"It all counts, it's like every week there's different guys making plays for the team. And when you can get a number of guys each stepping up big and making plays, you're going to win big ball games. You look at last year, these tough games early, we didn't win any of them. What a difference a year makes. We're happy to get this win, now we just have to move forward."
CHARGERS HEAD COACH NORV TURNER:
(on Green Bay)
"I give a lot of credit to Green Bay, particularly Brett Favre. He was on fire and had a hell of a football game. It was a very physical, hard fought game. They made a play at the end that obviously won the game."
(on his defensive secondary)
"We have faced two particularly impressive quarterbacks and we are seeing similar things in terms of the passing game. When they spread you out and do that, they are going to make plays."
(on if he was satisfied with the pressure they put on Favre)
"You are never satisfied with the pressure. They did a good job with their protection. They did a lot of chipping and they had a two tight end formation. Favre does a great job of buying time."
(on Philip Rivers)
"I thought Philip did an awful lot of good things. I thought he played well. He was accurate. There were times when they got pressure and he handled that extremely well."
CHARGERS QB PHILIP RIVERS:
(on if this game had the feel of a shootout)
"We had a lot of good things rolling in the passing game, as did they. Favre was having a day that we have all seen many times, he was really rolling. I felt like we were in an offensive rhythm all day. It's a shame that we lost."
(on Nick Barnett's fourth quarter interception)
"I could overanalyze it, but I just missed. Jackson ran a good route. The throw just sailed on me a little bit."
CHARGERS RB LADAINIAN TOMLINSON:
(on how frustrating the loss was)
"I am actually at a loss for words right now. I'm just kind of baffled and frustrated with the team right now. We have thirteen more games to go, so we better find out what is going on real fast."
(on the running game)
"I don't know if there is a problem yet. I can't put my finger on one particular thing, but obviously there are some things going on. It just isn't happening right now."
CHARGERS LB SHAUN PHILLIPS:
(on if he was surprised by Green's Bay spread offense)
"No, look at what New England did to us last week. What would you do? If you have Jamal Williams in the middle, I would throw the ball and that's what Green Bay did. They came out throwing the ball and spreading us out. That's what we expect to see from now on."
(on the high expectations that San Diego has)
"We still have high expectations. We can't let ourselves get down. We lost to a good football team that was hot and got rolling. We didn't execute, but we played hard. I can never fault a team for playing hard, but we have to do more to win a game."
