PACKERS-REDSKINS POSTGAME NOTES & QUOTES
-Green Bay improves to 5-1 with a 17-14 win over Washington today. The Packers have started the season with their best record since 2002 and stand at the top of the NFC North.
Other Postgame Notes:
-Today's paid attendance was 70,761.
-Tight end Donald Lee's 60-yard reception in the first quarter was the longest of his career and marked the longest play from scrimmage for the Packers this season.
-With an interception in the third quarter, quarterback Brett Favre surpassed George Blanda's NFL record for interceptions. Favre now has 279 career interceptions.
-Cornerback Charles Woodson returned a fumble 57 yards for a touchdown, his fourth career defensive touchdown and first career fumble return for a score. It was the first fumble return for a touchdown by the Packers since Nov. 27, 2006, when Abdul Hodge return a fumble 29 yards for a touchdown against the Seahawks.
-With his two sacks today, defensive end Aaron Kampman surpassed No. 7 Vonnie Holliday (32) and No. 6 Bryce Paup (321/2) on the Packers all-time sack list. Kampman now sits at No. 6 with 34 career sacks.
-Defensive end Cullen Jenkins notched his first sack of the season today.
-As part of the 21st annual Packers Women's Association Food Drive, 14,400 non-perishable food items and $13,523 were collected.
HEAD COACH MIKE MCCARTHY:
(on how he feels about his team)
"Glad to be 5-1. I thought it was a good victory today against a very good football team. We felt all week this was the best football team to date that we've played as far as what the film studies showed."
(on defeating Washington)
"We feel great about beating an excellent football team today. That Washington Redskins (team) is well-coached, they challenge you schematically and (it's) a big win. We'll take it, that's for sure."
(on whether this is what he expected out of the defense all season)
"I clearly think our defense is capable of playing this way. I think they proved that down the stretch last year."
(on the defense being the key to victory)
"They (were) clearly the key to the victory today and you could just see the strength of their performance increasing as the game went on."
(on the lift on the sidelines from the Charles Woodson fumble return)
"It provides a huge lift when any of our guys make a play and Charles had the biggest play of the game, which I think clearly ignited our football team and Lambeau Field. That's, in my view, the biggest play of the game."
(on what the close win says about the team's character)
"I'll take that game right there as a very good illustration of the character of our football team. There was a number of momentum swings in that game and they just kept battling back."
QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE:
(on heading into the bye week at 5-1)
"It feels great considering the question marks we have. We just keep finding a way to win and no doubt that's the most important thing, or aspect of this team, is finding a way to win regardless of injuries, mistakes we're making, lack of balance."
(on the importance of not losing two in a row at home)
"It's a place we need to win. We have won here in the past and once again I hate to say winning ugly is important, but as good as we looked in phases last week, we lost...We're winning and as tough as that loss was last week, to me this win is equally as rewarding."
(on the play of the offensive line fill-ins, Jason Spitz and Tony Moll)
"Our guys were challenged up front. I thought they responded."
(on his attitude towards the all-time interception record)
"I could care less, we won the game. I'm glad it's over just like the other records. We're 5-1 so it feels a heck of a lot better than having no picks and being 1-5."
(on the day that Charles Woodson had)
"He's a playmaker. It's funny how very good players, great players, show up when you need them out of nowhere. He's about making plays, he's a heady guy, he knows what's going on."
CORNERBACK CHARLES WOODSON:
(on the defense slowing down Cooley and the Redskins offense the entire second half)
"We just started playing better. We let him get loose a couple times, get open in the first half, and that was just mistakes on the defensive part. We just buckled down in the second half, you know everybody played their keys, played their gaps, played their man and we (were) able to stop them."
(on if he felt he was going to get caught on his fumble return for a touchdown)
"You know in those situations, you got to believe that you're going to make it to the end zone. When I first started out on the run, I was kind of ahead of myself, couldn't get my legs up under me, but I got a block by Al (Harris), I think on the quarterback, kind of helped me get a couple yards. And I was able to get my feet up under me and make it to the end zone."
(on how it felt to get back into the end zone again)
"There's nothing like getting into the end zone. You know, putting six points on the board, to help you get a victory, that's what you live for."
(on if that's why he didn't return the punt the next time)
"Yeah, I was a little spent. I needed a little (break), but as you can see, I got right back out there."
DEFENSIVE END CULLEN JENKINS:
(on the play of the defense in the second half)
"We went out there with great energy and just played a heck of a game. Not only did we stop them and keep them from scoring, we got a score, which turned out to be the deciding score on defense, so that was just huge."
(on returning to the game quickly after looking like he was in a lot of pain)
"Yeah, I'm still in a lot of pain. I thought everything was torn, my leg, when I got hurt. Obviously the doctors checked it and it's nothing serious. It's just a matter of coping with the pain."
(on if they did anything different in the second half to get more pressure on Jason Campbell)
"We just kind of settled down a little bit. I guess we kind of got used to him a little bit, and I'm not really sure what the difference was. I think it was just that, we just settled down and everybody just started playing like we can play."
RUNNING BACK DESHAWN WYNN:
(on the general state of the team after the win, being 5-1 and in first place)
"It's always good to get a win, especially a conference win. But everybody is feeling good. We got a break to rest our bodies and back healthy before we play Denver on Monday night."
(on getting the first down with about three minutes left, and leaving the game momentarily)
"I just got a hand problem, and sometimes when I get hit on or get landed on, it just takes a while for it to come back, and don't no one want to have the ball in your hand when you can't feel your hand. That's all it was."
(on his assessment of his run game today)
"It could have been a lot better. I don't think we ran the ball that much in the first half, part of the game plan. But in the second half, we got some yards, could have had the chance to get some bigger yards. It's just making the small plays and the big plays."
(on despite being 5-1, if there's concern over needing more production in the running game)
"I guess you could say that. We're just glad to be 5-1 now. Just get that victory, it's always good. We're just going to keep continuing to try to get better in practice, which (is) all we can do, and hopefully get it turned around in the bye week."
LINEBACKER BRADY POPPINGA:
(on the keys to the second half)
"The key is you got to keep playing. As long as there's time left on that clock, it doesn't matter what the score is, you got to keep playing. Good things are going to happen to you. As soon as you give in and start to be discouraged, that's when you limit any possibility of going out and making big plays. We just kept playing, and plays came our way and we took advantage of them - that helped up win the game."
(on going after the ball defensively, creating several turnovers)
"Yeah, I mean turnovers are huge. Everybody knows the stats - if you win the turnover battle if you create turnovers and you score, your chances of winning increase greatly. That's what we did today and we won."
(on if he was expecting the cold and wet weather conditions) "No, but it was great. This is what Lambeau Field's about man; the cold, raining, sleety weather, it's awesome. Last week it was like we were in the Bahamas or something, I was a little confused. But to come out in the cold weather, it was vintage Lambeau."
(on being 5-1 going into the bye week)
"I'll tell you what. Going into a bye week, you want to win so bad because you have a two week layoff. And you don't want to be lingering on a loss that whole time in those two weeks. So to go in with a win under your belt, it's going to be nice. You're going to be able to enjoy the off time a lot better and we're going to be ready to go again when we play Monday night in Denver."
WASHINGTON REDSKINS HEAD COACH JOE GIBBS:
(on the dropped passes)
"We did drop a lot of passes. The weather was wet and a little misty most of the game. We work in the weather every day so we have always taken the approach that that is certainly no excuse for us. We have to make the catches."
(on quarterback Jason Campbell)
"I thought Jason played extremely well. I don't think you could ask much more of him."
(on the turnovers)
"That is a standard thing in the NFL. It has been going on for years. Turnovers are a part of this game and if you are on the negative side of it you usually lose. It is tough to overcome that. You can't turn the ball over, but today a couple of them got away from us."
WASHINGTON REDSKINS QUARTERBACK JASON CAMPBELL:
(on if he views this game as a lost opportunity)
"We lost a major opportunity. We had all the opportunities to win the game and we didn't make the plays. Green Bay made the plays. Our defensive did an outstanding job of giving us an opportunity to score points. We need to take this game, learn from it and move on."
(on tight end Chris Cooley)
"Chris did an outstanding job in the first half of making plays for us. He is an outstanding player. I don't know what happened in the second half, maybe we didn't convert enough third downs so that we would have had the ball more."
(on losing three offensive lineman to injury during the game)
"As a young quarterback it is tough because you are trying to build chemistry with the guys around you. The guys up front are a big part of our offensive. When you have a big game, you usually go back and look at the offensive line and you are able to tell that they had a great day. So losing those guys today hurt tremendously."
WASHINGTON REDSKINS DEFENSIVE END PHILLIP DANIELS:
(on the defense)
"Except for the one pass that got away from us, we had a great day against Favre. We were just a couple of plays away today. You wish you could have a few plays back, but you don't get them back in this game."

PACKERS-REDSKINS PRESS BOX NOTES
-Two of the surprise teams in the NFC thus far - the 4-1 Packers and 3-1 Redskins - square off at historic Lambeau Field this afternoon. It marks the 249th consecutive regular-season sellout (263 including playoffs) at the NFL's longest-tenured stadium.
-The Packers saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end last Sunday night against Chicago in a 27-20 loss, while Washington comes off a 34-3 victory over Detroit.
-Green Bay achieved a 4-0 start for the ninth time in team history and the first time since 1998. Seven of those Packers teams went on to win an NFL championship (1929, '30, '31, '44, '62, '65, and 1966).
-Luckily for the Packers, former GM Ron Wolf was not discouraged by Brett Favre's first career appearance against Washington. Favre got his most extensive playing time as a 1991 rookie with the Falcons, at RFK Stadium, going 0-for-4 with two INTs in a 56-17 loss to the Redskins.
-Joe Gibbs returns to Lambeau Field for the first time since 1986, when he and quarterback Jay Schroeder registered a 16-7 win. Three years earlier in Green Bay, Gibbs and Joe Theismann sustained a 48-47 loss in the highest-scoring game in Monday Night Football history.
THE IMPORTANCE OF A QUICK START
-There's no secret that early success increases an NFL team's chance to earn a playoff berth.
-One of Packers' early goals this season - getting off to a quick start - was accomplished with the 4-0 start.
-Slow starts have plagued the Packers the past three seasons, only one of which resulted in a postseason appearance (2004). That season, the team started 1-4 but won nine of its last 11 games.
-In 2005, injuries contributed to a 1-7 start while a 1-4 start in 2006 proved too much to overcome.
-Both Washington and Green Bay now have the odds in their favor. A look at how important fast starts have become to eventual playoff success in the NFL, compiled from 1990-2006:
Record through 4 games (% of teams in playoffs)
0-4 (1.8%)
1-3 (15.8%)
2-2 (35.6%)
3-1 (65.2%)
4-0 (83.7%)
- Statistics provided by Elias Sports Bureau
HONORING THOSE WHO SERVE
-As part of the 'Operation Fan Mail' program, the Packers and Festival Foods will recognize a military family with Wisconsin ties at each home game.
-This week, the Packers and Festival Foods honor Spc. Douglas Frisque. A resident of Green Bay, Frisque was first deployed to Iraq with the 192nd QM Company from Milan, OH, in January 2007. Most recently he was stationed at Camp Strike in Iraq. Frisque is currently home for 15 days of rest and relaxation and is scheduled to return to Iraq October 18. His projected date of return is early February 2008. Frisque is accompanied this afternoon by members of his family.
