PACKERS-CHIEFS POST-GAME QUOTES
HEAD COACH MIKE MCCARTHY
On the injuries:
"As far as the injuries LB Tracy White had an ankle and he did return, S Nick Collins hurt his knee and did not return, DT Corey Williams also had a knee and did not return and RB Ryan Grant has a possible concussion."
On the game:
"That was a heck of a football game. I'm sure it was a great game to watch. Just the change in momentums in a great environment for the home team make it an excellent win for us. We knew that this was a tough football team coming in here and offensively, for us to score; this was the first time they have given up over 20 points this year. I have to credit our guys; we had some key plays in the fourth quarter. Defensively, I thought we did an excellent job in the first half. We had some plays that we needed to clean up and I thought our special teams were solid. What can you say about K Mason Crosby? I thought he had a heck of a day."
On challenging WR Jeff Webb's catch in the fourth quarter:
"The call came from the box and it was a great job by the coaches. I did not see it; we didn't get the replay down below. That call came from the coaches' box and that was a great job on their behalf."
On the Packers road success this season:
"It's a great bunch of guys that prepare, focus and I just can't say enough about how they find different ways to win. It's something that we talk about as a football team. Week-in and week-out somebody has stepped up to the plate to make a key play."
On his ties to Kansas City:
"I've got some ties here. This was my first NFL job and I have great respect for the organization, the Hunt Family, Chiefs President Carl Peterson and Marty Schottenheimer. They gave me my first opportunity. I think the world of Chiefs head coach Herman Edwards. I think he does a great job and this is a special place."
On holding a 7-1 record:
"We are halfway through, it's a good start and we are in first place with a key division game coming up. That's really where our focus is running into the third quarter of the season. We have a lot of football left and we still have work to do. I can't say enough about our players and how people are stepping up and finding ways to win games.
"I think the key for us is how we finished last season. This is a very confident football team, but they are also very in tune with the improvements that need to be made. I think with that, being extremely honest with yourself gives you a chance to grow. Every NFL games probably comes down to four or five plays and we had to make one or two more than Kansas City today."
On QB Brett Favre's two interceptions:
"On the first one WR Greg Jennings thought that Brett was getting ready to scramble because Brett stepped out of the pocket and out to his right. So Greg stopped his route in scramble mode and Brett threw the ball. On the second one, there was some pressure and I think his arm got hit by a lineman. Those were competitive interceptions that happen. To go in down a point at halftime was frustrating; I thought that the ball was on the ground too much. Those are the things that I'm talking about. Those are repeated mistakes that you have to eliminate from your game, because that's how you lose games."
On Favre logging a victory over all 31 other NFL teams:
"That's incredible and I know that both QBs Peyton Manning and Tom Brady have accomplished that. It's incredible to be able to say that and you've seen how long it has taken Brett to do that. He has won more games in the National Football League than anybody, so that's another excellent record."
On Chiefs TE Tony Gonzalez:
"I don't know anybody that has (shut him down). Tony Gonzalez is a great player and it was a key to our game plan to keep his production down. We did not execute that and I think you have to take your hat off to Tony. We had him doubled most of the day with safeties, linebackers and corners."
QB BRETT FAVRE
On defeating all 31 other NFL teams:
"That was not my intention. I wanted to win the game obviously, but not for that reason. What can I say? It's a heck of a win."
On the Packers road success:
"We had numerous opportunities to fold and we had numerous opportunities to win. It sounds like a broken record. Just the other night we were saying the same thing, but we didn't fold and we found a way to win the game. That's been the difference."
On being the youngest team in the NFL:
"I don't know what you guys are going to put in the paper and on TV tomorrow, but it's hard to doubt us. You can question us; I do too. Do I think we were born champions? Absolutely. Did I think that we were running out of time? Absolutely. Did I think we could do it? Sure, but week-in and week-out I keep saying that it is difficult to do it they way that we are doing it. I would like to make it much easier then how we are doing it."
"I've learned that youth doesn't necessarily mean losses. In some ways our youth makes us more resilient in sometimes not knowing the difference. Sometimes I know the odds are against us. Look at things more like a pessimist if you will. 'How are we going to beat these guys?' The guys on our team are like, 'hey, what's the big deal?' I told some of the guys after the game that maybe one day you will appreciate these types of wins a lot more then maybe you do now. Not to sound negative, but it's difficult to win. I've been on some pretty good teams that have come in (Arrowhead) and lost. Do I think those teams are better than this team? Yeah, but the record speaks for itself. There are still a lot of question marks. We are finding ways to win games, but we are finding ways to make them closer then they should be. We have to find a way to clean up some of those things and put games away, because the good teams are able to do that."
On the 60-yard passing play to WR Greg Jennings:
"It was not really a part of the read necessarily. That particular play we had run numerous times, not only in this game, but in other games, but with a tight end in that position. Basically, it is a clear out to get WR Donald Driver in on a 12-yard cross and WR James Jones coming underneath on the outside. I think everyone in the building at that point knew that they were playing the Tampa Two and Greg happened to be in the tight end position. I'd like to give you some great formula, but as I left the huddle and got lined up I looked out there and it kind of dawned on me that Greg was running down the middle of the field with a linebacker. I think that's a mismatch. My second read basically goes to the safeties. Are they wide enough that I can lay the ball up like I did without them being able to converge on the ball? Really the whole game, if you look at the pictures on the sideline, the safeties were extremely wide. I was nervous when I threw it because I didn't know if I had underthrown it or overthrown it, because I threw it way before he even looked and I never reminded him out of the huddle. He's just thinking that he's the clear guy and running down the middle of the field, taking the linebackers with him. It just happened to work out."
On the recent success of the deep passing game:
"We've had a lot of success in the short passing game and teams know that. We've had a little more success with the run game, so, to me, the downfield passing game for us has been a result of our play action. What a great catch WR Donald Driver had. He's not open, but he was open just enough because of play action to get the defender to freeze ever so slightly. It comes down to making a good throw and a good catch. Donald did that twice today and he got pass interference and still caught the ball and the other one was a tremendous catch. So we were able to kind of back things off and if not back them off, get them to bite just enough to throw the ball down the field."
On the interception before halftime:
"I got hit right as I threw it. I could not put any more into it. My only concern was that the corner was off and looking inside. He had his eyes on me the whole time. I think that if I hadn't gotten any pressure, it was a no brainer. The ball is out with enough zip, or I'm not rushed into a throw where I have to make a split-second decision. It's easy to second-guess and say that we should just run the clock out, but we had three timeouts and enough room to move the ball to potentially get a chance at a field goal. I don't second-guess it one bit. Looking back, the protection could have been a little better. Based on that I could have gone elsewhere or thrown the ball away, but things like that happen if you try to be aggressive. The other side of that, if you don't take chances, plays like the one at the end of the game won't happen."
On throwing the TD pass to Jennings off his back foot:
"That would be par for the course for me, but I don't throw very well when I step into them. I looked at the picture on the sideline and the ball was up 12 yards before he looked, I'm guessing. He's five-yards from LB Donnie Edwards; he hasn't even caught him yet before the ball is up. I think that was an anticipation and hope."
K MASON CROSBY
On the field goal that put the Packers up 26-22:
"It went through pretty clear. It was going a little left but it moved back and made it through with enough room to spare. Halfway there I knew it was going through."
On playing against Chiefs K Dave Rayner who was with Crosby and the Packers in training camp:
"In my mind we were just playing another team. It's not like I'm competing against him. It was good to talk to him. All that stuff's behind us. We're on our teams now and just trying to make good on it. "
LB A.J. HAWK
On intercepting a pass intended for Priest Holmes in the 3rd quarter:
"I was on coverage on him and he [RB Priest Holmes] ran a good route. It was probably one of those balls that the QB would like to have back. We had an idea they were going to run that play. I stayed inside and threw it to me and I was just glad to catch it. I think everyone wants to make plays in games and I've been saying for most of the year that when the opportunity presents itself, I want to be there and to be ready to make the play."
On the play that led to Chiefs RB Larry Johnson being taken out of the game:
"I don't know what happened but it seemed like a normal tackle to me. I'll have to see it but I'm not exactly sure what happened there."
On Chiefs TE Tony Gonzalez:
"He's their go-to guy. They are going to throw the ball to him multiple times. He's one of the best ever - made lots of plays. I can't talk about or explain pass games and how we cover tight ends but today we knew they were going to go to him. He caught some balls and made some unbelievable plays on us. For one reason or another we didn't shut him down today."
CB CHARLES WOODSON
On the Packers 7-1 record:
"I keep reiterating this, last year we lost these close games but this year we've been able to stay poised when we get down and make the plays we've got to, either on offense or defense."
On the team:
"We're playing okay. It's just hard for me to give us a pat on the back when we make mistakes coming down the stretch of the season. The last half of the season you know who is going to be the contender and we're going to be one of those teams. But we're going to have to beat the other teams that are contenders. We have to stop some of the big plays and penalties.
"We have the attitude that we are always in the game. Our sideline hasn't been getting down this year. If we let the other team make a big play we go back on the field and do our thing. And that's just a testament to the players that we've got on this team. We're going to play a full 60 (minutes)."
WR GREG JENNINGS
On his 60-yard TD catch from Favre in the 4th quarter:
"I had a little seam and I was clearing it out. It was Cover 2 Tampa and I had Donnie Edwards on me, but the middle of the field was wide open. I was just thinking that if I could run as fast as I could past him that hopefully Brett would see me and throw it up."
On the chemistry between he and Favre:
"Anytime you can be out there and practice and get more reps with your quarterback, it's going to make you that much better as a duo."
**
CHIEFS HEAD COACH HERM EDWARDS
On the game:
"It was a defensive game in the first half. I thought both defenses did a great job. Then the second half the offenses got heated up. It was about big plays. We made some big plays in the passing game and they made big plays. The quarterback [Brett Favre] threw the last one off of his back foot and threw it about 60 yards. He made the big play down the middle that got them the lead and from there it was just a matter of us throwing the ball trying to get back. The first half it was a defensive game and the second half it was an offensive fireworks show. Everybody was making big plays.
"It was a game that with five minutes to go we were in good shape to win it. We didn't do a good enough job on defense to stop them. We let them get away a couple of times and we've got to recover from this."
On injuries:
"Larry Johnson has a right foot injury and it's being x-rayed. We don't know the extent of it. Dwayne Bowe had a strained hamstring and that's why he was kind of in and out of the game."
Were you aware that the Jeff Webb's catch might be altered?
"No, I didn't see the replay. That hurt us but there were a lot of little things that did in the game. If you make a play here or there you've got a chance. They hit the big pass. We had a six-point lead and I didn't think they would score. I thought they might move the ball and we could hold them to a field goal. There wasn't much time on the clock."
On the Chiefs offense without RB Larry Johnson:
"We'll see. Obviously, Priest [Holmes] is here and Kolby Smith is here so we still have two running backs. We'll probably have to do some things different. You can't give Priest all those carries, obviously, if Larry can't go. Smith will have to play some too if Larry can't go. You play to your players' strengths. That's what you do."
On the accuracy of Brett Favre's downfield throws:
"The one we were doubling the guy and [Bernard] Pollard was running with the kid and didn't look back for the ball; the guy made a great catch. The second long one was more of us trying to trap them when they were doing a lot of outs against our Cover 2. We went to another defense and put Donnie [Edwards] in a bad position. They called the right route and scored the big play."
On the play of Brett Favre today and looking back:
"It doesn't change. He has the ability to make great plays. They play that way and when the game is close and he has the ball in his hand they think they have a great chance to win. He's done that the last couple of weeks. He makes plays. That's why he is a first round Hall of Fame guy. I talked to him before the game and told him I appreciate what he's done not just as a football player but the things that he's overcome in his career. It hasn't always been smooth sailing. He's battled a lot of things in his lifetime."
