Favre Breaks All-Time Passing Yardage Record
**
HEAD COACH MIKE McCARTHY:
(On today's game)
"Today gives us our first round bye and we will be smart as we move forward with the help of our football team. We have been smart all along, starting with our training camp and the great schedule you guys all love but we will continue to move forward. Chicago is still an important game but it definitely gives us a chance to get some people back."
(On the difference between the first and second halves of the game)
"We didn't play very well in some spots in the first half. Our tackling on defense needed to improve and I think it definitely did that in the second half. Offensively, we had some opportunities. Both in the first and second half we had a favorable play called and we did not execute it. They did a better job of that, I give credit to the Rams. But I'll say for the whole game I thought our special teams was outstanding. I think they played a huge part in this victory today."
(On having more turnovers than the Rams)
"I mean those are all things you point to, that is part of playing the game and improving. The most important is winning the game. I think our special teams played a huge, huge part in that because we played with favorable field position all four quarters. So as far a losing the top possession, losing the yardage, I think that is as much factoring in our special teams plays as anything. Three turnovers is not what we are looking for and we need to obviously fix that as we move on."
(On QB Brett Favre breaking the record for most passing yards)
"Well I don't want to speak for Brett but it means a lot for him. He has had an incredible career and he just continues to add another log on to the fire as he moves through the seasons. He has been a tremendous player for us this year and his leadership and performance weekly at the quarterback position. I just can't say enough about him and you like to see good things, like records, happen to good people."
(On their successful season)
"Well we are a good football team and a focused football team and we have kept around the target. We need to continue to do so. It's a credit to the players. It is a very hard working group. They enjoy practice, they are fun to be around, they are fun to coach and it is truly a credit to the players."
(On QB Brett Favre)
"He is a once in a lifetime player. He will go down as one of the greatest, or the greatest player in NFL history. But just the way he goes about his business I think speaks volume about him as a person. He is a joy to coach. He is a big part of our success this year, as he has been throughout his career. We would love to see him keep breaking records."
(On blitzing by the Rams' defense)
"Jim (Haslett) is a tremendous football coach. Schematically, that is the biggest problem we have had all year without a doubt. He won a number of those pressures against us. It is just the matter of us getting the ball out. We had some success in the first couple plays and had the big touchdown. But it is a challenge and I think our players did a good job with the extra time and the blitz drills and the study this week. I give credit to coaches like Jim Haslett that line up the play and try to win."
QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE:
(On securing a first round bye in the playoffs)
"It goes without saying how, at least today, things fell into place. Most importantly is the fact that we won here today. I think we've only won here once. Haven't had a lot of success. I know St. Louis is struggling right now, but it can be a tough environment. Hats off to our team for putting ourselves in this position."
(On "blowing the game open" in the second half)
"The score would indicate that we blew it open, but I got the feeling that it was relatively close throughout the game. I give them a lot of credit. I thought they played well across the board. Yeah, they made some mistakes, but we did, too. Their defense is a high-risk, high-reward type of defense – opportunistic. They have a ton of injuries, but I thought they played well. They gave us some looks that we actually hadn't studied for. We knew it was not going to be a big chuck of yardage type of day. We knew we'd kind of have to buy our time. I felt like we did that. Once again, we made a few mistakes on offense, but overall we did enough to win. Our defense hung in there playing against some of the most talented guys in this league on offesnse. What can I say about our special teams? Get the ball in Koren Robinson's hands and watch him do his work. Mason (Crosby) kicked the ball well. Overall, it was a great win for us."
(On passing Dan Marino for first place on the NFL's all-time passing yardage list)
"I say it every time this happens: I'm honored, but I would much rather win. The fact that I've played in every game (since my first start) to me is probably my biggest feat. None of these individual records would have happened if it wasn't for the fact that I'd played in every game. To pass a guy like Dan Marino, regardless of what record it is…I've said this all along and I will continue to say this: I've never considered myself in the same league as Dan Marino, maybe the greatest passer ever. The way he did it is probably the way you would coach another guy to do it. The way I've done it, I don't know if you would coach guys to do it that way. To be mentioned in the same breath as him is quite an honor."
LINEBACKER NICK BARNETT:
(On obtaining a first round bye in the NFL playoffs)
"That is huge for us to earn that first round bye. You can't get much better than that. We would like to have home-field advantage, but this is just as good. I don't know the last time the Packers went 12-2. It is a great accomplishment for us, but we have a long way to go and have a lot more things to do."
(On which is more fun: sacking the quarterback or hitting a running back)
"They are both equally fun. That is hard to decipher. If you get a good hit on a running back, that is great, but getting a sack is huge and being able to get that tackle for a loss, causing them a little havoc. Hopefully I can get a lot more coming up."
(On Rams RB Steven Jackson and the second half adjustments to stop him)
"He made some great plays in that first half and was able to cutback. We were out of position a little and had two guys in one gap and he was able to continue bouncing that ball. We missed a couple of tackles as well, but he is a great back and he is going to make plays. I think he is one of the best backs in the NFL by far. We came out in the second half and were able to fix some things."
(On a possible Pro Bowl selection)
"It will be announced Tuesday and it would be nice to go, but if not, I'll keep working and try to get there next year. We're not worried about that. We have a first round bye and have a long way to go with playoffs. I don't even know who we play next week. I never know, but it's going to be fun."
SAFETY ATARI BIGBY:
(On how he was able to make two interceptions)
"Every game, every time I see the ball thrown, I try to run full speed over there and if the ball is tipped, maybe I can make an interception and if not, if they catch the ball, maybe I can just make a tackle."
(On what enabled him to have three interceptions in the past two weeks)
"Just concentrating on working harder and in meeting rooms and at practice."
(On what happened on Rams RB Steven Jackson's long touchdown run)
"We lost leverage and he bounced it outside. He ran to my right and he cutback left. Maybe because he is that quick or maybe because we were that quick and over-pursued."
(On being aware that the Packers clinched a first round bye)
"We are aware that we have a first round bye. That is great. More than anything, that will give us a chance to get our bodies back under us going into those playoff games. It has been a long season since (training) camp and we appreciate it."
WIDE RECEIVER DONALD DRIVER:
(On catching Brett Favre's record breaking pass)
"I knew it was coming, he gave me the little look and after that I knew I was going to catch it. I just had to make sure to catch the ball and they told us if I caught it, that one would break the record, so I just wanted to make sure I'd go into the record books with him at least on one play."
(On the Packer passing offense)
"I think it's just making plays. We got the opportunity to come out here and make plays. We knew they (Rams) had a great secondary, we just had to make sure to connect on all cylinders and we did that today."
(On clinching a first round bye)
"We were happy. We looked at the scoreboard a couple of times, especially the receiver group. Now we know we have that first round bye, now it's time to get healthy and get ready for the playoffs."
RUNNING BACK RYAN GRANT:
(On the rest of the season after clinching a bye)
"We want to finish the season strong and get that momentum going into the playoffs. So, we need to take care of business next week."
(On Brett Favre's record breaking performance)
"Right now it's typical. It was great. It was actually a run call. I knew he wasn't going to run it though. But, I'm excited for him, I'm happy for him, it's much deserved and I'm grateful to be a part of it."
(On the Packer field position throughout the game)
"At the beginning of the week we talked about our special teams playing better than their special teams. All day our special teams did a great job of giving us the ball in great field position and allowing us to put up points fast. It's a tribute to the way we practice, taking care of the business."
WIDE RECEIVER GREG JENNINGS:
(On securing a first round bye in the playoffs)
"It was very important. We get the week off. We get extra time to rest, recover and study our opponent whoever they might be."
(On if he was surprised to be so open on his touchdown catch)
"They were in empty (coverage) and the guy who was supposed to be guarding me jumped the underneath route for whatever reason. It was one of those situations where Brett (Favre) just threw it up and I caught it."
(On if he's expecting to go the Pro Bowl)
"I'm not even worried about it. I won't even be paying attention to it. I'll probably find out from some random person on the street. It would definitely be an honor, but it's not one of my primary goals."
**
ST. LOUIS RAMS:
HEAD COACH SCOTT LINEHAN:
(On game)
"The game was a real close game for the first three quarters. We spent a good deal of our time defensively on the wrong side of the field and offensively on the wrong side of the field. It is tough to overcome the field position battle. You spend the whole time playing on the long field or the short field. I don't have the numbers in front of me of how many plays we spent on the minus part of the field. I know that 41 of their 53 plays were on the plus side of the field for them. You are not going to beat a good football team like this doing that. We had some plays that weren't made, and we can go back and say ‘if we made that play here or if we finished that drive before the half' we could have at least tied the game up. Again we have to give them credit for executing better than us."
(On why the kick cover units are struggling)
"We have to keep looking at who is on there. We have done a lot of shuffling and moving people in and out of there and we have not found the right combination. It has not been a bright spot for us, we have made some adjustments and made some progress for a few weeks, but we have not been consistent. We all need to take credit for that."
(On scoring in the second half)
"We are working on it, we haven't been able to execute it. When you jump off sides and getting holding calls and give up a sack and you have to overcome that plus go 80 or 90 yards each time, it is hard to score points. We have not played good as a team in the second half. You can focus on offense, defense or special teams but our team has not been a good second half team. Our fourth quarter scoring and our ability to stop people in the fourth quarter has not been good enough. You have to win fourth quarters if you want to win in this league."
(On the defense breakdown on the Greg Jennings TD catch)
"There was zero man coverage and I think we had a miscommunication between a couple of players as to who was going to take the vertical and who had the underneath coverage. Obviously you can't do that."
(On QB Marc Bulger's play in the first half versus the second half)
"I credit their defense for tighter coverage, they got an early interception and that factored into it a little bit. Once we got behind we got into a little bit of a passing mode, more than what we had anticipated. I thought Bulger played very good except for a couple of plays that could have been made, but he is the quarterback and he throws the passes."
(On RB Steven Jackson)
"He is a great football player, and I think that game time is when you give him the football. I think we did a good job of getting him involved early and being able to run the ball. We still continue to try and mount some drives in a the run game."
SAFETY OSHIOMOGHO ATOGWE:
(On facing QB Brett Favre)
"Brett Favre is arguably one of the best quarterbacks to play this game. He's very smart. He knows this game inside and out. We had a challenge in front of us and I thought we handled it pretty well. We covered him as well as we could. We caused some turnovers and pressure. I think we did a good job. We just messed up and made some mistakes in crucial points that allowed them to get the win."
(On his two interceptions)
"There is a bright side to every game, but we're focused on the team. We had a lot of mistakes on both sides of the ball and special teams that cost us this win. We have a short week. We're going to go back and look at what we did wrong and prepare for Pittsburgh."
(On if he felt like the Rams were visitors in today's game)
"It is what it is. I have no control over the crowd. We love our fans. We want them to come to the game and support us. We can't force anyone to do anything. We're going to go out there and play our best and try our hardest each and every play. Hopefully they support us."
(On if it felt during the game the Rams were visitors)
"I was aware of it, but to me – cheering or booing, I love people yelling. Whether they're here for them or here for us, we'd like them to be here for us, but as long as there's an atmosphere I'm going to go out there and play my hardest regardless of who is in the stands. It's going to be how it is."
(On if the crowd was more towards the Packers because of QB Brett Favre's record)
"The Packers have a great tradition and great history. Their fans follow them everywhere. We knew there were going to be a lot of Packer fans supporting their team. We weren't focus on that. Our job was to go out there and play and be effective and do what we're supposed to do. That's what we were focused on."
(On the short week)
"It's the NFL. It happens. There are a couple of other teams in the league that had this turnaround in a short week. It's football. They're going to come out. They're going to run the ball, throw the ball. We have to stop their offense. When it boils down, you just go and do what you've been doing the whole season and just play."
QUARTERBACK MARC BULGER:
(On his protection today)
"The line did a pretty good job of protecting me. I feel like towards the end when we had to throw the ball more they got in there a couple times, but overall I thought they played pretty well."
(On taking a few hard hits and if there was any recurrences from his concussion)
"No I'm happy about that. I don't know if it was a knee, a fist or what got me in the head but I think (A.J.) Hawk got me pretty good. I worried for like a second or two but it went away so I'm back to health."
(On if taking a few hits and seeing how he reacted during the course of the game was the last hurdle)
"Sure. You just don't want to second guess yourself or find out that you maybe made the wrong decision. I came back and I don't have to say ‘I should of sat out another week' so I'm pleased. I wish I would have played better, I wish the outcome was better but health wise I came out pretty good."
(On it being a tale of two halves)
"We hung in there the first half. Obviously the field position, not making them go a long field hurts. The turnover right before the end of the half hurt the momentum. With that team, when they get on you they can throw the ball, the can run the ball and they have a good defense. It was going to be tough once we got behind in the second half and we couldn't get anything going."
(On if their front seven is as good as advertised)
"Yeah they are really good. We ran the ball on them pretty well today so that is a credit to our line. They don't make many huge mistakes, they come the whole game and when they can finish a game they do. They showed that if we let up on one assignment for half a second on one play they are going to make us pay and they did."
(On the atmosphere with so many Green Bay fans attending the game)
"Our fans that came, we appreciate them. We know how loyal the Green Bay fans are and I am sure on Thursday there are going to be a ton of Pittsburgh fans so that is just the way those teams travel. Like I said, with the weather and everything I am thankful for the fans that did come. They (Packer fans) go into towns and take over."
(On if it ever felt like they were playing an away game)
"You know this year we just haven't been playing well at home. It wasn't overly loud, but usually when you are home it's not like that. They (Green Bay) are having a great year. Their fans are excited; you can hear them in the pregame, all the chatter. It looks like an exciting environment to play for that team, it reminds you of college a lot."
(On Rams WR Isaac Bruce moving up the all-time receiving yards list and Packer QB Brett Favre setting the all-time passing yards record)
"Yeah I knew Isaac's going in, obviously I knew Brett's (Favre). When we came off the goal line I asked Ike if he had gotten enough yards and he told me he did so that was pretty special to be in there because I didn't think I was going to get the chance (to be a part of it). Unfortunately he got shut out last week so I got to be on the field for that so that was pretty cool. Then to see Brett (Favre) was something that down the road I think was pretty cool too."
(On WR Isaac Bruce being more involved this week)
"It's tough with Brock's situation. I don't think he knows the receivers. He doesn't work with them. He doesn't know what guys are good at or other guys might be better at. I kind of know his strengths, I try to go to him when the situations come and nine times out of 10 he makes a great play."
RUNNING BACK STEVEN JACKSON:
(On today's game)
"We lost so it wasn't good enough. It gets to a point where I say the same thing over and over, week-in and week-out."
(On running well in the first half)
"I was running pretty well in the second half. We just got behind and stopped running. They didn't stop the running game. They were overly aggressive in the first half and in the second half they backed off and played traditional football which we saw on film. They still didn't stop us in the running game. They got ahead. When you have to play from behind that just means more passing."
(On if QB Marc Bulger seemed fine)
"I thought he felt good. I thought he looked good. They got a little pressure on us. When you do that, you can't move the ball. On second downs we were shooting ourselves in the foot. We get in something manageable and then we kept getting penalties. That was hurting us as well."
(On the crowd atmosphere)
"It was a joke. It's simple as that. The whole first level was Green Bay Packers. We allowed them to put up signs. It's a joke."
LINEBACKER WILL WITHERSPOON:
(On how he thinks the Rams played defensively against Green Bay)
"We played well defensively. If you look at the big picture, they were in some great situations as an offense. They started on the plus-side of the field or just shy of it. That makes a big difference as far as how a team is going to attack you and how many chances they are going to take because there is a shorter field they have to get to to try to put points on the board."
(On if QB Brett Favre's record was brought up during the week)
"It's one of those things that you say, ‘it's over with. It's done. Har-rah, har-rah. I have a game to play.' I respect him. I'm happy for him. He's a great quarterback. It was in the middle of the game and at that point it doesn't matter."
(On if he noticed if any adjustments were made after the score was tied)
"They weren't doing anything differently. There were some mistakes that we made. It's hard when you're starting out in tough field position. To move the ball just a little bit and get those first downs that they needed and make some plays that they needed. That's going to happen in a special game. All-in-all I don't think there's much that we can change."
(On the crowd atmosphere)
"Some teams are going to travel well. That brought more guys than we did today. That's a sad story, but at the same time their fans are traveling to see their guys do something great. It was a little surprising to see more people in your house than your team. It doesn't make you really happy, but it doesn't make you real excited. It just makes it a road game for us."
(On the short week)
"You have to take it easy on your body. You have a short time, a short window to recover. You have to know your book and know exactly what's going on."

PACKERS-RAMS PRESS BOX NOTES
Green Bay heads to St. Louis to face the Rams one week after clinching the NFC North title. It is the 18th division crown in franchise history.
-The Packers come into the matchup winners of 15 of their last 17 games and stand in second place in the NFC by virtue of their 11-2 record.
-The team also has won seven of its last eight road contests.
-It is also coming off what could be the most balanced performance of the season. Green Bay excelled in all three phases last Sunday against Oakland. A balanced offensive attack tallied 445 total net yards (266 passing, 179 rushing), while the defense surrendered just 233 yards, its best output of the season. But perhaps its best effort came from the special teams unit, which scored twice in the division-clinching win.
-Green Bay hopes to avenge perhaps its most maddening loss of 2006, a 23-20 setback last October. On that occasion, quarterback Brett Favre had a wide-open David Martin in the end zone but was stripped by Rams lineman Leonard Little with under a minute to play in the red zone. The NFC loss became even more crushing with the 8-8 finish, as the Packers missed out on the postseason by a number of tiebreakers and mere percentage points.
-Including five contests against the St. Louis Cardinals, who played in the city from 1960-87, the Packers are 3-4-1 all-time in St. Louis. They have won only once by the Arch since Vince Lombardi left the team in the late 1960s. That victory came in 1996, when the Packers defeated the Rams, 24-9, on their way to the Super Bowl XXXI title.
-Favre has a chance to make even more NFL history this Sunday. He needs 184 yards to pass Dan Marino's all-time NFL record for career passing yards (61,361). Favre, who surpassed Marino on the league's all-time TD passes list in Week 4, will attempt to break another of the league's most hallowed records in his 251st consecutive regular-season start.
THE BATTLE FOR A BYE
In addition to playoff seeding, the Packers still have a bit of history to play for. By winning their final three contests, they can establish a new franchise record for victories (14) in the regular season.
-According to the NFL, the Packers can clinch a first-round bye under two scenarios: 1) Green Bay win and Seattle loss or tie OR a 2) Green Bay tie and Seattle loss. The Seahawks travel to Carolina to take on the Panthers Sunday at 12 p.m. CST.
-The Packers must win in order to stay alive in the race against Dallas for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
GRANT ON TOP SINCE MIDSEASON
While it struggled to get production out of its run game through the first half of the season, Green Bay has seemed to uncover a gem in first-year running back Ryan Grant.
-Grant assumed running back duties in the second quarter against Denver and responded with his first 100-yard performance. He has totaled four 100-yard performances on the season.
-Acquired in a trade with the New York Giants, Grant arrived in Green Bay just before Week 1.
-Grant earned his first career start in Week 9 at Kansas City and has started every game since. A dual threat out of the backfield, the Notre Dame product also has caught 27 passes.
-He leads all NFL backs in rushing yards since Week 8:
Running back Rush Yards since Week 8
Ryan Grant, GB 717
LaDainian Tomlinson, SD 668
Justin Fargas, OAK 648
Brian Westbrook, PHI 620
Willie Parker, PIT 617
DECEMBER IS TIME TO REMEMBER
-Whether it involves clinching division crowns, jockeying for playoff seeding or building momentum for next season, every game in December matters.
-The home stretch of the NFL calendar has proved extremely successful for the Packers over the years. Since 1997, they own the league's best mark in games played in the final month (including regular-season games played in January) at 36-12-0. New England's 33-13-0 mark ranks second.
-Head Coach Mike McCarthy moved to 5-1 in the month of December with the win over Oakland on Sunday.
WEARING THE STRIPES
Today's officiating crew includes referee Ron Winter (14), umpire Roy Ellison (81), head linesman Tom Stabile (24), line judge Tom Stephan (68), field judge Mike Weir (50), side judge Tom Hill (97) and back judge Lee Dyer (27).
NEXT WEEK
The Packers travel to Chicago to take on the Bears on Sunday while St. Louis hosts the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR TODAY
