PACKERS-LIONS POST-GAME NOTES & QUOTES
-With a 13th win in the regular season, the Packers tie a franchise record. They won 13 games in 1962, '96 and '97 - each time they played for the NFL championship.
-Today's game marks the 17th consecutive time Green Bay has defeated Detroit in Wisconsin. The last time the Lions won in the state was in 1991.
-Green Bay rushed for 217 yards today. The last time the Packers ran for over 200 yards in a single game was Oct. 29, 2006 against Arizona, when the team rushed for 203 yards.
-The Packers continue to own the NFL's best W-L record in regular season finales since 1994, improving to 13-1.
OTHER POSTGAME NOTES:
-Brett Favre's 21-yard rush in the first quarter was his longest since a 35-yard run against Tennessee on Dec. 20, 1998.
-Ryan Grant had a rushing touchdown for the sixth consecutive game, tying the second longest streak in franchise history. Terdell Middleton had a rushing touchdown in six straight games during the 1978 season and Paul Hornung scored in seven consecutive games in 1960.
-Koren Robinson caught a five-yard scoring pass for his first touchdown as a member of the Packers. His last receiving touchdown came in 2005 as a member of the Vikings, also against the Lions (Dec. 4).
-Favre ends the season with 535 attempts, 356 completions, 4,155 passing yards and 28 touchdowns. The 4,155 passing yards are the third highest of his career and fifth all-time on the franchise list.
-Favre also finishes the season with a 66.5% completion rate, besting his previous franchise record of 65.39% established in 2003.
-Favre's career numbers include 8,758 attempts, 5,377 completions, 61,655 passing yards and 442 touchdowns - all NFL records.
-Green Bay's 97-yard drive in the first quarter was its longest touchdown drive of the season. It had a 98-yard drive at Denver (10/29) that resulted in a field goal.
-Craig Nall threw a touchdown pass for the first time since Jan. 2, 2005, at Chicago.
-Jon Ryan's 72-yard punt was Green Bay's first punt of 70 yards or more since Sean Landeta's 72-yard punt on Sept. 20, 1998, at Cincinnati.
-Brandon Jackson finished with 113 rushing yards, the first 100-yard performance of his career.
-Shaun Bodiford made his first career catch in the fourth quarter.
-Atari Bigby's first quarter interception was his fifth of the season. His five interceptions lead the team.
-Al Harris made his 100th career start today. He has played in 170 straight games (160 regular season, 10 playoffs).
-With 10 points today, Mason Crosby finished with 141 points on the season, surpassing Ryan Longwell's franchise record for points in a season by a kicker. The total stands at No. 3 on the franchise list for points in a single season behind Paul Hornung (176 in 1960 and 146 in 1961).
-Crosby's 141 points also led the league in scoring at the conclusion of the game. If he were to maintain the league lead, he would become only the seventh rookie in NFL history to do so.
-Defensive end Aaron Kampman was inactive, snapping a streak of 73 consecutive starts.

HEAD COACH MIKE McCARTHY:
(on what was the best thing to get out of this game)
"Momentum, just starting the game the way you're supposed to, jumping on your opponent...I really liked the way we started the game."
(on whether the team is playoff ready)
"We're playoff ready and we'll be playoff ready in two weeks. We'll take some time off here over the next couple days and then we'll get back at it and hit the fundamentals on Friday and Saturday. We're not going to change our approach and we've just got to keep working on improving and getting ready to win football games."
(on the play of Brandon Jackson)
"Things really weren't very good in the run game early in the season and I think he showed today when the running back and the run-blocking unit are coordinated, what he can do. I was happy for his success today and he's just a young back with a bright future."
(on tying the franchise record with 13 regular-season wins)
"I'm very proud of that. As a football team it's something we've acknowledged for the last couple weeks as a goal of ours. Any time you can stand here and say that you've set an all-time record in the history of the Green Bay Packers, that speaks volumes."
QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE:
(on what Koren Robinson's touchdown meant to him)
"I hope it meant as much to him as it did to me and it meant a lot to everyone...I was just happy for him and it's been well-documented how much I've supported him and will continue to. It was a good play on his part. I was glad I got him involved and he made the play."
(on whether this is as good as he's felt about a team heading into the playoffs since the late '90s)
"It was only a few days ago where we were a little concerned and that concern hasn't changed. I'm always concerned. (But) I'm pleased with the way we played today. It's what people expected of us today I think. It's what I expected and with that in mind, yeah, I feel pretty good about going into the playoffs."
(on giving a high-five to the ref after a touchdown)
"It's what struck me at that time. I turned around, he was standing there. I was looking for someone to celebrate with - he just happened to have stripes on."
(on his 21-yard run)
"I don't run as much as I used to. That (play) has a run-pass option and I just decided to keep it. I've still got a little bit left."
(on whether it was a good balance of gaining momentum and staying healthy)
"I always feel like the game leading up to the playoffs is important for a number of reasons. One, not getting anyone hurt, but I think the most important thing is you play the game to win and how long you play your guys to me is a matter of opinion - and everyone has one. But I felt like when I came out of the game and a lot of our guys came out of the game, we accomplished what we wanted to accomplish. We moved the ball well, we were productive, we got some energy going, regained some confidence if we lost any last week and from that standpoint, it was very productive."
WIDE RECEIVER KOREN ROBINSON:
(on how it feels to get a touchdown for the first time in a couple of years)
"Good. It feels great actually, just glad to get it out of the way. Hopefully more will come in the playoffs. I'll get other opportunities to get back into the end zone, but it just feels good. That's my first one here at Lambeau, my first one with the Packers and my first one with Brett (Favre), that's a special occasion."
(on his Lambeau Leap)
"It was good. I should have went in backwards. But you know, I'm a novice at it, so I have to learn how to do it."
(on the wide receiving corps not missing a beat despite both starters being inactive)
"We've been saying it all year, anyone of us can go somewhere and start. We've got five receivers that can go and start. And that's why we call it a "Fab Five." And we have 'Bodi,' (Shaun Bodiford), 'Bodi' can come in and he did what he's supposed to do. We're just deep at receiver man. One monkey don't stop no show. One goes down, one has to step up. With two guys being out, we had to step up, and I feel like we did what we needed to do today."
(on establishing a winning momentum going into the playoffs)
"It was division game, and you always try to get the division games. We definitely wanted to get this one and not have that feeling like the last two weeks we were 0-2, then go into the playoffs like, "what do we have to correct?" Instead of that, now we got the momentum going into the playoffs, coming off a big win, going to the playoffs, the sky's the limit for you, we just have to play ball."
CORNERBACK TRAMON WILLIAMS:
(on how it feels to get his first career interception)
"It was good to get it out of the way, especially in the last game of the regular season. You know, they gave us the opportunity to play and we made some plays out there."
(on facing Calvin Johnson in single coverage most of the game and the back-ups showing how deep of a unit the secondary is)
"We go out there and we work hard behind Charles (Woodson) and Al (Harris). We watch their pick-up technique's and tendencies. That's just a good thing, to be behind those guys, learning everything they do. I had a good feel of Calvin Johnson the first game, so you know, I kind of felt him out. I knew he was going to come out here and redeem himself from the first game. He's a pretty big receiver and he seems like he's got a lot of potential, so I just have to come out here and play him as hard as I can. We just went out there. The front seven did well, I was very impressed with them and we just held up on the back end."
(on establishing momentum heading into the bye week of the playoffs)
"It's definitely important to establish some momentum. We (were) able to rest some guys in the process of it and no one really got injured. And the young guys showed what they can do. That shows the depth that we have. We know what the older guys can do, so it shows what the younger can do, and we came out with a big victory and established some momentum going in."
CORNERBACK WILL BLACKMON:
(on his injury)
"I'm good. I'm not on crutches or anything, so I'm just walking around, I'm alright."
(on what happened to his foot on the play he was injured)
"I came on a corner blitz, and that's when they ran a reverse and then my foot got caught in the ground, so to be safe I just took myself out. I told the coaches I'd wait a little bit. Just be on the safe side I stayed out of the game."
(on how he feels)
"I feel alright. I do."
RUNNING BACK BRANDON JACKSON:
(on his run to start the second half)
"I was just telling coach that a play before, earlier in the first half, it was open. I don't what happened, who went back to it, I gashed it for a big run."
(on running like he had something to prove)
"Basically, it's just being patient and waiting for my opportunity and just taking advantage of it."
(on why the Lions struggled to tackle him today)
"It's all about just keeping your shoulder pads low and keep your feet running and EB (running backs coach Edgar Bennett) has been doing a great job preparing us for that."
LINEBACKER BRADY POPPINGA:
(on what the key to the bye week in the playoffs is)
"The key to the bye week is rest and recovery. That will be the same principles applied to this bye week, is rest and recovery in preparation of our first round playoff game. We'll approach it the same as every other bye week."
(on the importance of not stumbling into the playoffs, instead, entering with a victory)
"Well yeah, I don't think it's ever good to lose, period. But to win and have this propel us into the playoffs is a really good thing and it's something that I think will make a difference for us."
(on the importance of the focus and intensity of such a young team heading into the playoffs)
"Well I think it's important because we are young and it's sort of our first go-around, our first rodeo for a lot of guys, these playoffs. So I think as much confidence, as much momentum as you can get, it's only going to benefit us. So I think this worked for that particular reason, it gave us motivation to propel us into the playoffs."
(on how much Coach McCarthy has meant to this team and loves the game)
"The big thing about coach is, that everybody's got great blitzes, everybody's got great schemes, everybody knows how to do their good runs and what have you. But the great thing that he brings to the table, and his staff included, is the fact that you want to play for him, you love to play for him. So you want to go out and execute the schemes, you want to go out and play well for him. It's not that I personally wouldn't want to play for anybody, but it just makes it that much easier for a guy that knows he's tapped into us, he's part of us. It's not like he's this aloof guy that's out all by himself, pulling off a dictatorship or anything. He's a part of us, and it's great to play for a coach and a coaching staff like that."
PUNTER JON RYAN:
(on if it's big for the whole team to put last Sunday's loss to Chicago behind them)
"Yeah, I think most guys forgot about last week, put it behind them. But you know it's great to get that 13th win, that's what we've been talking about all week, to get to 13. Some people might say it's a nothing game, but you couldn't tell 53 guys in here that, because we wanted to win pretty bad."
(on the importance of getting the first punt off today)
"Yeah, I just wanted to get out there and get that first one out of the way a little bit. But, as I said, I've felt like I've been hitting the ball well all the way through. That's what I said all this week. I didn't feel like I had to go out there and change anything, I just felt like I had to go out there and hit the ball like I always do."
(on his 72-yard punt being quite good for his net average)
"Yeah, I'll take those any day."
LIONS HEAD COACH ROD MARINELLI:
(on Detroit's effort today)
"It wasn't good enough. We got beat in all areas. We wanted to come in here and win, but we didn't do that for whatever reason. We just got outplayed."
(on the play of rookie receiver Calvin Johnson)
"He just needs to make the plays. That is what that position requires. You have to catch the ball and make plays. You can't drop passes."
(on what improvements need to be made for next year)
"I think all areas need to be improved. We need to keep continuing to upgrade our roster, draft well and we have to coach well - all those things."
(on explaining why Detroit struggles so much on the road)
"Our run defense hasn't been very good, we don't tackle well, we haven't been able to run the ball early and we turn the ball over."
LIONS QUARTERBACK JON KITNA:
(on not taking advantage of red zone opportunities today)
"We just aren't executing the way you need to execute in this league. It all has to work together and you can't have breakdowns. That is what we had today. Give Green Bay credit, but for the most part we just didn't make plays."
(on the lack of Detroit's running game)
"This is a good defense. I think this will be a top five defense in the league next year. They have a lot of young players. Green Bay is very sound and disciplined. We couldn't create creases. I don't know why that was, but they just kept clogging up the seams."
(on if this year was a disappointment)
"Yes it was a disappointment because our expectations were higher this year and our results didn't match those. We had some injuries, but we should be able to bounce back from that. We have to become a deeper football team that has the talent to be able to lose a guy here and there. Calvin is going to get better. I am excited for the off-season to work with Calvin and Shaun (McDonald). If we can keep the core together, the better we will be."
LIONS DEFENSIVE TACKLE CORY REDDING:
(on his third quarter fumble recovery)
"The center and quarterback exchange was bad, and I saw the ball on the ground. I had the ball between my legs and held on for dear life."
(on the progress Detroit made this year)
"We started the season off fast, but in the second half we made too many mistakes. We did make steady improvement, but at the end of the day our goal was to make the playoffs and we didn't do that. All that we can do now is to get better, learn from our mistakes and come back next year and do this thing again."
(on the play of Detroit's defense this year)
"We did well for the most part. Our ability to get to the ball was excellent, but we need to get better at the small things. Other than that, our guys fought and played hard in whatever situation we were in."

PACKERS-LIONS PRESS BOX NOTES
-Green Bay plays its 16th and final regular-season game Sunday when it hosts the Detroit Lions in the 157th meeting of the rivalry.
-The Lions have not won in the state of Wisconsin since a 21-17 victory over the Packers at Lambeau Field in 1991, a streak that spans 16 consecutive Packers victories and seven Lions head coaches.
-For the fourth straight season, Detroit makes its annual visit to Lambeau Field in December.
-The two clubs met just over one month ago, with Green Bay earning a hard-fought 37-26 win on Thanksgiving.
-The Packers' recent dominance in the series hasn't just been limited to games played in Wisconsin. They've won 12 of the last 14 overall meetings, and Head Coach Mike McCarthy is 3-0 against the Lions.
-Sunday is the 253rd consecutive regular-season sellout (266 including playoffs) at Lambeau Field, the league's longest-tenured stadium.
-Winners of 16 of its last 19 contests, Green Bay has clinched a first-round bye for the first time since 1997.
-One week after a rough performance in wintry conditions in Chicago, quarterback Brett Favre and the offense welcome the sight of the Lions. The Packers have scored more points (3,182) against the Lions than any other franchise, and Favre has completed more passes and thrown for more yards against the Lions than any other opponent. His 52 TD passes against Detroit rank just two behind his personal best of 54 against Minnesota.
-A 13th win would match Green Bay's franchise record for wins in a season. That goal seems attainable, especially given the fact that Green Bay owns the NFL's best W-L record in regular-season finales since 1994:
Green Bay: 12-1-0 (.923)
Washington: 10-3-0 (.769)
Tennessee: 9-4-0 (.692)
New England: 9-4-0 (----)
Indianapolis: 8-5-0 (.615)
N.Y. Giants: 8-5-0 (----)
St. Louis: 8-5-0 (----)
MORE ON THE STREAK vs. DETROIT
-Favre's first game against the Lions in Wisconsin was a 38-10 victory at County Stadium in Milwaukee on Dec. 6, 1992. Fifteen more Packers-Lions games have been played in the state since then, all with Favre under center for the Packers, and each has resulted in a Green Bay victory.
-Take away that '94 playoff victory and Favre's record of 15-0 starting at home against the Lions is the most home wins any starting QB has ever recorded against an opposing team in the regular season. The runner-up is John Elway, who was 13-2 against the Chiefs at Denver.
-Again taking away the '94 playoff win, the Packers' 15 straight regular-season home wins over the Lions ranks second among active NFL streaks:
18 Washington over Detroit
15 *Green Bay over Detroit
14 *Dallas over Arizona
12 *Pittsburgh over San Diego
*-Arizona defeated Dallas at Texas Stadium in 1998 playoffs; Green Bay defeated Detroit at Lambeau Field in 1994 playoffs; San Diego defeated Pittsburgh at Three Rivers Stadium in 1994 playoffs.
40 YEARS AGO TOMORROW
-Monday marks the 40th anniversary of the most famous NFL game ever played, the 'Ice Bowl'.
-Bart Starr's 1-yard scoring dive with 13 seconds left clinched Green Bay's third straight NFL championship en route to its second Super Bowl title.
-Kickoff temperature was 13 below zero and the wind chill was minus-46.
-Monday also marks the end of an era in the Packers front office as Lee Remmel retires, ending a 62-year relationship with the team. A member of the Packers' front office since 1974, Remmel led the organization's public relations and publicity efforts until 2004, when he became the Packers' team historian. Prior to joining the team's front office, Remmel was a sportswriter and columnist for the Green Bay Press-Gazette for nearly 30 years, covering his first Packers game in 1945 in Milwaukee.
WEARING THE STRIPES
-Today's officiating crew includes referee Pete Morelli (135), umpire Darrell Jenkins (76), head linesman George Hayward (54), line judge Charles Stewart (62), field judge Jim Saracino (58), side judge Jeff Lamberth (103) and back judge Keith Ferguson (61).

25 RYAN GRANT
-Needs 101 yards rushing for his first 1,000-yard season.

31 AL HARRIS
-Needs 1 start for 100 career.
-Has played in 169 straight games (159 regular season, 10 playoffs), a streak that began in Philadelphia in 1998. Since coming to Green Bay in 2003, has started all 82 games (79 regular season, 3 playoffs).
21 CHARLES WOODSON
-Needs one interception for 30 career.
2 MASON CROSBY
-Needs 1 point to surpass Ryan Longwell's franchise record of points in a season by a kicker (131 in 2000) and 8 points to surpass No. 3 Don Hutson (138 points, 1942) on the team's single-season list.
-Needs 14 points to surpass the NFL record for points in a season by a rookie kicker, established by Kevin Butler (144 points) in 1985.
-Aims to become only the seventh rookie in NFL?history to lead the league in scoring and first since Butler in '85. |
