PACKERS-BROWNS POSTGAME QUOTES
HEAD COACH MIKE McCARTHY:
(on the offense, particularly the starts) "Well the point production with the number one offense - two drives, two touchdowns - that's what you're looking for, but I'm sure when we view the film tomorrow there will be some things we need to correct and build off of. I thought as a whole for our football team it was a good solid starting point. There were a lot of positives that came out of this game and there are some negatives. We have to make sure we learn from that. The thing that I was most impressed with was the tempo that our team played with on both sides of the ball. I thought they did a really good job of pressing the line of scrimmage and getting the calls in from the boundary. I thought it was really a clean operation from that standpoint. Those are the things that you need to make sure that are clean during the preseason. I thought we were off to a good start there."
(on evaluating the defense) "It's a good start. There are a lot of things you try to accomplish in preseason games. Obviously you want to win the football game, especially at home, at Lambeau Field. But again, it's the first time the defensive staff and the defensive players had an opportunity to compete in a live environment. Once again, I thought the game management, the boundary operation, the ability to get the calls in…We saw no huddle tonight, that's great work for us. I thought our communication was pretty much clean. These guys played big with the opportunities that were presented to them. With the turnovers and to keep them out of the end zone speaks volumes of your defense."
(on whether or not he's concerned with the penalties) "The penalties in the second quarter obviously took away better opportunity for point production. Those are things we'll work on. The pre-snap penalties, there are no excuses for it. We need to eliminate that from our play. Once again, it's the first preseason game, it's a starting point and there are things we have to clean up. Definitely penalties are one of them."
QB AARON RODGERS:
(on No. 1 offense) "I think it was a great start for us, to be able to score on both of our first two possessions. I thought the line did a great job controlling the line of scrimmage the entire game. We ran for 230 yards. Especially the first group. I had all day to throw, except for the one play where we screwed up the protection adjustments where I had to throw it away to the right. Other than that, the protection was great, especially on that third down when I had Donald Lee over the ball. Everybody had gotten out of there and to be able to have three-plus seconds to throw the ball, you're going to be successful in those situations."
(on wanting to improve on opening drives) "It's a point of emphasis. It's preseason, but it's important to start early with success like that. It's important that we look at the first 15 thoughts and to really get things that we feel good about."
(on Driver making adjustment on the touchdown catch) "Well, he was looking at my eyes, I think. My eyes were to the left trying to hold that safety down the sideline. Just knowing if I did that long enough, I could get the ball down the middle to him. And just knowing I have to take a little bit off of it because it was going to be a hard adjustment for him. It was just Donald being Donald and making a great play."
(on the tight end play) "We have a couple really talented guys. I've been saying it all camp that the rise of Jermichael Finley has really spurred Donald Lee to raise his level of play as well. And I think he has done that. They're both talented guys and hopefully we'll be able to get them the ball a little bit more this season."
LB BRANDON CHILLAR:
(on holding Cleveland to 59 yards rushing and getting them off the field quickly) "Yeah, you know for the first time in a game situation, the defense came together and played pretty good. Obviously our offense was running that rough."
(on the transition to the 3-4 defense) "I think it seemed pretty smooth out there. We're all on the same page, which is good for the first time out, like I said, in a real live game. Everyone was on the same page and it looked like we all did our assignments well."
(on what the defense has to do to better themselves after a great initial showing) "It's a good performance, but just like always, it's kind of a cliché, but you can always get better. We just have to keep working. It feels good, but we'll let it feel good for tonight, but once we get back to work on Monday, we just got to continue to get better."
WR JAMES JONES:
(on the first team offense putting 14 points on the board on their first two possessions) "The offense was definitely in good rhythm today. If we can play that like and keep that up, we're definitely going to be tough to stop. We had some big plays by Donald Driver, down the field. We definitely looked explosive. If we can get the running game going like that every game it's going to be a great offense."
(on what they want to do going into the Buffalo game next week) "Maintain consistency, get everybody on the same page, try to move the ball up and down the field, try to keep on getting that chemistry going."
S ANTHONY SMITH:
(on the play he intercepted Brady Quinn in the end zone) "We were in a Cover 2, he (the WR) had position, but I wasn't too far away from him. I just kind of "played basketball," I was just able to turn on him and pretty much took it from him."
(on the defense as a whole pitching a shutout) "We had a pretty solid night, Coach Dom (Capers) simplified our play calls, everyone was able to go out there and just play ball and not think too much. We communicated well, which is a big part of this defense, we did a great job of that, and that's why we had success."
(on not showing any speed bumps with the new 3-4 defense) "No there wasn't. Like I said, he (Dom Capers) simplified it to where everyone could just go out and play and not think too much and just go out and display our talents."
C/G JASON SPITZ:
(on offensive line paving the way for over 200 yards rushing) "I think one of the emphasis' coming into the season was we want to run the ball and for defense, we want to stop the run. It's still just the first preseason game, so I don't want to get ahead of ourselves, but I mean it's a good start. We just got to move on from here."
(on establishing the run) "The run facilitates the pass. It's one of those things where you want to come out and be able to run the ball because it will open up the offense a little bit."
RB TYRELL SUTON:
(on the offense amassing over 200 yards rushing) "It felt great, just being out there playing. First time out there fighting someone other than each other, and it paid off. The way we've been practicing, our tempo, it really showed out there. Give credit to our offensive lineman, if it wasn't for those guys, we wouldn't have gotten anywhere. Over 200 yards rushing, you can't thank anybody but them."
(on the Cleveland defense having difficulties bringing him down) "Definitely, I definitely pride myself on that, but like I said, I wouldn't have been able to break tackles if there wouldn't have been holes and guys being blocked. A lot of guys just got one hand on me because I was able to get to the second level without getting touched and that's all our offensive lineman."
(on ending a preseason game playing smash-mouth football) "You know when you're up, when you go into that four-minute offense, you know it's coming to you. We had a couple of gut check times, third-and-one, fourth-and-one, and we knew we had to get it. We went out there and we did it."
(on how it felt to play his first game at Lambeau Field) "It felt great. Growing up, living the dream right now. We have to keep it rolling, that's not the end of it, that's just one game and it's over now. We celebrate it but it's back to work on Monday."
CLEVELAND BROWNS HEAD COACH ERIC MANGINI:
(on the loss) "I told the players before the game that I wanted to see hard football, I wanted to see toughness and I wanted to see us being able to outhustle our opponent and have more effort than our opponent. I don't think we really achieved any of those objectives tonight."
(on quarterback Brady Quinn) "I thought Brady did a nice job with the two drives that he had. He had the one ten-play drive to start and then the one at the end of the half, but with any drive the ultimate objective is to score points. He was disappointed with the interception at the end of the half. He put us in a good position to score points, but we just couldn't capitalize on it."
(on Donald Driver's touchdown catch) "This quarterback (Rodgers) has enough movement in the pocket to keep plays alive and he has a really strong arm, so in the secondary you can't assume that the play is over."
CLEVELAND BROWNS QB BRADY QUINN:
(on how he played) "I feel confident in my ability and I feel like I did some good things. Next we just have to watch the film and make a lot of corrections, because it's not good enough at this point."
(on Green Bay's 3-4 defense) "In a game like this we don't really have film on them and they really don't have film on us. They did a good job of bringing some pressure with a variety of blitzes. That'll be a thing we take a look at when we watch film tomorrow and take into the next time we play them."
CLEVELAND BROWNS LB DAVID VEIKUNE:
(on his first NFL game) "The game is fast – playing against all professionals who are some of the best athletes in the world. It's definitely an experience."
(on Cleveland defense) "We have a lot of great coaches and great leaders on our defense. It's only the first preseason game, but we just need to keep working hard, continue to communicate and work as one."
(on Packers offense) "They looked good out there. They have a great quarterback and great coaches as well. We're looking forward to another chance at them in the regular season."
CLEVELAND BROWNS DL COREY WILLIAMS:
(on being back in Green Bay ) "It feels good to come back to where it all started for me, to see a lot of old teammates and a lot of the fans still chanting my name."
(on Green Bay's first string offense) "They are pretty good. They were moving the ball around on us passing and running. They did a great job of mixing it up. They outplayed us on both sides of the ball."
(on Cleveland's defense) "We have a good defense hands down. Once we tighten up a few areas and get everyone playing on the same page, we are going to have a great defense."

HALFTIME QUOTES
HEAD COACH MIKE McCARTHY:
(on first half ) "I thought the offense got off to a good start with the play production and the two touchdowns. Now the second half we need to clean up the penalties."
(on penalties) "This is training camp and that's the part of the game we need to clean up."
(on initial impression of the 3-4 defense) "It's great to get out here in live action. They're doing a good job with the protection. I like what I see so far.
(on Crosby missing 55, 60, comfortable putting him in that situation in a regular season game) "Absolutely, we clearly go off what we see in pregame, and he was hitting 62 (yards) consistently in pregame, and that's why we're comfortable."
LINEBACKER AARON KAMPMAN:
(on the overall performance) "We did some good things and we did some things we would like to correct. They had the big play on the reverse, but all in all we did some good things. The biggest thing was we were able to keep them off the scoreboard. With the penalty on them on the field goal we kept them off there and then the two takeaways were just huge. That's the biggest variable in winning a football game."
(on communication between the sideline and field) "It was pretty good. It's going to be a work in progress, but the more reps we get the better we'll be at."
(on whether the defense can build off this performance) "I hope so. We'll go back and look at the film and keep rolling and keep getting better. It was a good starting point."
QUARTERBACK AARON RODGERS:
(on the first two series) "It's a good start to the season. Driver made a great adjustment on the first one, and we got a penalty and were able to finish off that second drive."
(on the long pass to Driver) "They dropped eight, protection was great from the start. I just moved in the pocket, and when I stepped up, tried to look the safety off to the outside, and throw it down the middle. He made a great adjustment, and the ball was on the money."
(on if the offense is in sync) "It's two series, one game. We have to build on that, hopefully make it three or four the next game and score some points."
CLEVELAND BROWNS HEAD COACH ERIC MANGINI:
(On the first half) "It's too many critical mistakes. The interception in the end zone, the dropped touchdown pass, the holding on the first field goal, a penalty on fourth down, a penalty on third down. Those things are all under our control. We have to play sound football. We have to play disciplined football. We have to play with more effort, toughness and smarter. "
(On what he was pleased with from the first half) "I was happy about the 10-play drive we had at the start of the game. I thought that was well executed. I was happy about the drive we had here in two-minute. We were able to use up the clock, really play for the last shot. We just didn't end that the right way. We should have at least got out of there with a field goal."

End of half.

1st Qtr
GB 14, CLE 0
GB: Grant, 2 run, 1:59
11 plays, 68 yards, TOP 4:54
Key plays: Consecutive passes to Finley and Jones for a combined 20 yards started the drive. Facing fourth-and-5 at the Cleveland 37, the Packers decided to go for it. Rodgers' pass was incomplete, but Cleveland's Corey Ivy was called for defensive holding, giving Green Bay a first down. A 19-yard pass to Lee converted a third down and made it first-and-goal on the 7, and Grant needed two carries to take it in.
GB 7, CLE 0
GB: Driver, 53 pass from Rodgers, 12:07
7 plays, 78 yards, TOP 2:53
Key plays: Grant picked up a third-and-1 with a 2-yard run, and then gained 14 on a run up the middle. On third-and-10, Rodgers started to scramble and then let fly with a long one that Driver hauled in for the score.
