POST-GAME QUOTES
GREEN BAY PACKERS HEAD COACH MIKE McCARTHY:
(The Vikings returned two turnovers in the first half, how much did that rattle you?) "It didn't rattle us, we can't have it. The two turnovers we had, in particular, the sack fumble, took the points off the board. The second interception shouldn't have happened."
(The job you did on Adrian Peterson tonight?) "I thought we played very well. Holding Adrian to his number was definitely a focal point."
(You gave up eight sacks today, how are you going to fix that?) "Well, it's a combination of things. We need to look at the specifics of it. It's an issue that has gone on for four weeks. We can't play this way; we are playing way to up-and-down. It is hurting us because the big plays we are able to generate, we are too much of a big, little offense."
(The penalties in the first quarter hurt you.) "Penalties was a negative. I think we had six penalties in the first half and they didn't have any. I know it didn't balance out either, as the game went on. It was definitely a factor in the game."
(What is the injury report?) "Cullen Jenkins had ankle cramps, but he returned. Will Blackmon has a knee sprain and Desmond Bishop has a rib bruise."
(What did you think of their quarterback?) "I thought Brett Favre played well, I'm not sure what his numbers were, but I'm sure they were very good. I'm proud of us containing their run, but they were explosive in the passing game. I don't think we put as much pressure on him, but I thought he played well."
(Do you think your guys handled the emotion of the night?) "Yeah, they were definitely in the game. I thought all the preparation and leading up to the game was a good job. We made way too many mistakes tonight. We would have a hard time beating any team with the mistakes we had. I thought they played very well, they didn't make too many mistakes tonight, and I thought that was a huge factor in the game."
(If you had known you were going to make it into their end of the field as much as you did today, would you have thought you would have won this game?) "I always plan on getting into their end of the field, every week we play. We felt if we were able to get the ball on the perimeter, we would beat them. We are a big offense in some ways and right now we need to fix it."
(There were several plays you had a tight end lined up on the left hand side, and Jared Allen was still able to get through. Was that frustrating that you couldn't pick him up?) "It's a combination of things. I thought T.J. Lang did an excellent job when he played down the stretch. We didn't help him a whole lot. I thought he did a good job coming off the bench."
(Fourth-and-goal at the one, did you consider kicking a field goal there?) "No, I play to win. I thought it was a good play. The third down call bothers me more than anything. Their in a goal-line defense and we are in a goal-line offense and we are in a play we call "Tempo play", the ball was held up by the referee and I didn't have time to change the play. I liked the fourth down call; I wish I could have the third down call back."
(You have a bye now. Are you going to stick through it or how do you make sure these guys know it is just one game and it's a long way to go yet.) "Well, it's the fourth game of the season, obviously a game we came into with every intention of winning. We had a lot of opportunities to accomplish that. We need to learn from this experience. I thought it was a great opportunity for our football team, especially the younger players, playing in this kind of environment during the regular season is something I think we can carry with us. We are 2-2 for a reason and we need to fix those things and that's what we will do."
(Can you talk about the three phases; special teams, field position, penalties, how much did that factor in?) "I don't think any of the phases completed one tonight. That is what the film review is for. The penalties definitely factor, - they didn't have any penalties and we did. Eight sacks, how many games can you win giving up eight sacks? We need to look at them and fix them; it is an issue that has gone on for four weeks."
PACKERS LINEBACKER BRANDON CHILLAR:
(Did you guys match the intensity of the night?) "I think we did. We did a good job of holding Adrian Peterson in check. That was the main goal. Obviously we didn't come out with the win so there is a lot of stuff we need to correct."
(Are you glad you are going into a bye week?) "It can go either way. Sometimes you want to get this taste out of your mouth, but I think it is time now to take a couple of days and regroup and come back and keep grinding. We have a lot of football to play. By no means is this thing over."
(Are you glad to see the Minnesota Vikings again in a few weeks?) "Yeah. I think so. Like I said, it's disappointing but it is so early in the season that we have to keep grinding it out."
PACKERS CORNERBACK AL HARRIS:
(Your thoughts on Brett Favre's night overall?) "They played well. They won the game and that is what counts in this league."
(How disappointing is it to lose a game with such hype and see Brett Favre rise to the occasion? "It is very disappointing. Like I said we can't give away points; we can't have mental errors, and we have to be on top of our game. They played well. They did things well. As for Brett, he took exactly what we gave him and they came out with a win."
(Did you have some frustration with Derrick Martin?) "We just have to go back and look at the tape."
PACKERS LINEBACKER AARON KAMPMAN
(Were there more blitzes called than normal? It seemed like you rushed the quarterback more than usual tonight?) "Towards the second half we brought a lot of pressure. Really, in the first half on third down we brought more pressure. What it came down to really is that we didn't execute our defense particularly in the first half."
(How disappointing is it to lose a game that has such magnitude and meaning?) "Obviously it's difficult. We wanted to make a statement and try to play really well. A few things obviously didn't go our way. It's a frustrating deal. We lost this team and now we have to fix this team."
(Especially in the third quarter, Favre was making completions for first downs on 3rd--and-long, how disappointing was that?) "In the second quarter they had some 3rd-and-11s that they completed. We got to get off the field. That was a must for us according to the game plan and we didn't get that accomplished. Obviously that was a point of emphasis for us."
PACKERS WIDE RECEIVER JORDY NELSON
(The sting of the defeat, how is it hitting you?) "You know it is tough. Anytime you lose it is going to be tough. Obviously we wanted to come in here and play good, and we didn't. We put ourselves in some bad situations. We had some good plays, but we made too many bad ones and it put us against ourselves as well."
(You scored a touchdown with a nice run after the catch. Can you talk about that play?) "It was just a crossing route. I was just running my route and A-Rod stet hit me in the middle and I just tried to get as much as I could and I was able to get into the end zone. It was a big play, a momentum play for us."
(The return game, it seems that you have a nack for it?) "Yeah, I mean it is something I enjoy doing. Obviously we don't look for anybody to go down, but hopefully Will (Blackman) is good and he will be back. Somebody has got to step up every time. There is plenty of guys getting banged up and when you are one play away, you have to go out and do your best."
PACKERS CORNERBACK CHARLES WOODSON
(Did Brett Favre do what you expected him to do?) "I didn't expect him to do that. I thought we would have played better but obviously we didn't, and I give them a lot of credit. He played a great game and apparently he got his wish tonight. He stuck it to us pretty good. All I can do is take my hat off to him; he played a great game and their team played a great game."
(Did Brett Favre throw long more than you thought he would have?) "We had plays called that should have stopped those long balls and for whatever reason we weren't in the positions to make the plays that we needed to. He (Brett Favre) has been doing this thing a long time, so when he sees something there isn't any question in his head. A lot of it is on us and we give him credit."
(There was so much focus on stopping Adrian Peterson, should the focus have been different?) "Not at all. Like I said before, we had plays that should have stopped those long passes. We did what we wanted to do as far as Adrian was concerned by limiting him out on his runs. Those long passes should not have happened but once again I give him credit."
(What Brett Favre showed up?) "The Brett Favre that has a lot of wins under his belt and a lot of touchdowns under his belt. I don't think that was any question when he came back. We didn't do ourselves any justice."
MINNESOTA VIKINGS HEAD COACH BRAD CHILDRESS
(Opening statements) "The big thing from my standpoint was it was an altogether deal. That is what we talked about before we went out, altogether. Offense, defense, and special teams, all of them had a hand somewhere along the line. Whether it was the pass game on offense, the sacks on defense, the (special teams) coverage and Chris Kluwe punting down there. I just thought it was an altogether good win in the NFC North. I'm happy where we are at, at the quarter pole. A lot of football left. The big thing is that we continue to improve and chip away at the things we need to work on, and we have plenty to work on. It's a good humble group and they are right-minded about it, hats off to them."
(Was there any pregame message to limit the hype of this game?) "No, that was going to build itself. They are excited I didn't give them a Dale Carnegie or Knute Rockne last night. Matter of fact, I got a little hand. There are games that take care of themselves and other games you need to stoke them a little bit. Just thought we needed to out hit them, out tempo them and out compete them and I thought our guys did a great job."
(The way Brett Favre was throwing the ball, what year did it look like out there?) "He's still got great command of the football. Whether the command is touch or velocity or being able to pump it and let it go. He still has great command of the football. He is what he is. He's a great competitor. He's steely-eyed when it comes to competing. Some games tickle you a little bit more than others. A good win and I'm sure he's glad just like all of us are. "
(Your thoughts on the offensive line's solid play?) "I think the thing was they did a great job of pass protecting. He (Brett Favre) had his way back there. They were committing a lot of guys to the run. Therefore, Adrian's numbers (weren't as impressive). It's more about attempts than it is about yards. It's the quality of the pass not the quantity. It's the quality of the runs not the quantity. You still have to be able to exert your will at some point."
(Was Brett Favre's performance what you expected?) "I thought he was great. He got excited when we made good plays; offense, defense, special teams. He can keep things stoked up in there pretty good. It's a great thing for a defensive lineman to get out of his mind crying and slinging snot. It's another thing for a quarterback because the focus narrows. He's done it enough times where he is able to keep that in check."
(What is the reason for Sidney Rice's improved play?) "Well the onside kick (recoveries) were huge. I have to pay a special compliment to Murph (Brian Murphy, Special Teams Coordinator) and that special teams group. They knew right where it (onside kick) was at, we practiced that. Those four guys have to hold people off of Sidney, those guys standing in front of him. That's not unlike pass protection and it isn't any fun with a ten yard run coming at you. He (Mason Crosby) made that play, an exceptional onside kick that he has off of turf. That's hard to contend with. Sidney grows in leaps and bounds and I think there is great confidence between him and Brett (Favre)."
(Did Brett Favre's previous knowledge of the Packers cornerbacks help him out?) "I don't know, it's a different scheme. You are asking those guys to do different things at different times. The safeties were different, the nickel corner is different. It doesn't hurt you but really you are trying to attack the scheme as much as you can. I don't think probably a major thing."
(The passing game and downfield attack is growing, can you comment on that?) "It's usually a combination of a few things, just like sacks are. Great protection, great route running, quarterback did a good job with his arm, with his eyes. He was great in moving people, great command with the football putting it where either we can get it or nobody gets it."
(What happened on the Adrian Peterson fumble? Did he get nicked up on the play?) "Yeah, he tweaked his leg. They (Packers defense) stood him up and you got to protect it (ball). They don't blow the whistle anymore. You need to start protecting it until you hand it to somebody or you're back in the huddle."
(Have you ever seen a challenge where the challenging team ending up giving you points?) "You know I don't think I have. I told the guy (referee) before going over there just make sure you look at everything because his knee was down."
(Was anything different in your offensive pass protection scheme?) "No, I just thought they were better with the things that we normally do. We just did a better job of executing."
(What was your message to Brett Favre during the week?) "It's don't get out of body. I thought he did a great job of keeping it together. Like I said, you don't want your quarterback crying and slinging snot coming out of the locker room. He was great, he was into it. Just what you would expect, and what I have seen since he's been here."
(Does this have the makings of an elite team?) "Based on our record you would say yeah. But there is too much football (left). There are teams that ascend, descend. We were 1-3 last year at this time and we made the playoffs. I don't have any illusions about that. You have to get it on the field week-to-week. This week we have to get it on the field in a short week. Good football teams play on Monday night and good football teams find a way to come back and win on the following Sunday. That will be the next task at hand."
VIKINGS DEFENSIVE END JARED ALLEN
(Brett Favre said that it is human nature to come out tonight and want to prove something. What evidence of that did you see? "You guys saw it. He was on fire today. I thought the offense was great. They were well balanced. I would like to see what the third down conversion was because there were some big plays that they picked up. When you can do that and field position was great. At the end of the game we are forcing them to go 80, 90 yards to score and that just took time off and you can't ask for a better job. He plays like that all year."
(How often have you felt this tired after a game?) "I usually feel this way the next day; it just came a little early. What time is it? It might be the next day already."
(That goal line situation, how big was that?) "That's huge. That's just the will of your team right there. It's a bend don't break mentality. Since I have been on this team we have come together down there. We did it against Chicago and no one gives it easy to us on the goal line. We take pride in it and we knuckle up. It's your last chance to make right a whole bunch of wrongs."
(Are you ok with Brett Favre stealing your limelight?) "He can take it. I will just be the guy creeping around in the back. If it gives me five sacks a week, I will shut up and not say a word."
(Did it feel like playoff atmosphere?) "It was loud all game; the crowd was phenomenal. We even out-cheered the Packer fans which was cool. It was honestly one of the [most fun] games I have been a part of. Last week was crazy, but this week the energy level all game was nuts and that's what gets you going as a player. You have a bad play and you feel like you let the crowd down and you want to do something to get it back."
(Do you think that you will lobby for that half sack?) "Absolutely. I ain't giving nothing away."
VIKINGS QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE
(Feel a little better about the pass protection?) "Pass protection was great. Their style of defense has obviously been chaotic for the teams they've played, and they mixed it up again today. I thought we had a good mix of short passes, and just in general, the passing protection was awesome. They stopped the running game better than I thought. I thought we'd run the ball better. I was hoping we'd run the ball better. You don't want to, against a defense like that, throw the ball too many times, but it was better than I thought it was going to be, if we had to throw the ball as much."
(What was it like to play the Packers and what was it like to walk off the field after?) "It really didn't feel that strange playing against them. I tell you, if there was anything, it was a little strange seeing Aaron (Kampman) and Alan (Al Harris) and Charles (Woodson) and Nick (Barnett) and Brady (Poppinga) and Pick (Ryan Pickett) and all those guys across from me (after) going against them every day in practice. But as far as the game went, the only thing I can say is I was about as nervous as I've ever been before a game, going into this one. I didn't think I would be. As the week progressed, I felt fine but when I got to the hotel yesterday, it kind of dawned on me. Monday Night games, any game is important, but I just know coming over here all those years, what it was like. I wanted to play as well as the few times I've played well over here. I wanted to do the same thing on the opposite side for obvious reasons, to go 4-0, regardless of what people think. I had church today at 3:00 and was sitting there and throwing all kinds of prayers out, and I said, "Man I'm losing it." Man I am so thankful the way this game went, and we were fortunate enough to win it, but the Good Lord answered my prayers, I guess."
(Any chance those nerves helped you focus?) "It would appear that way, but I felt like for anyone, you play better, you make better decisions not being nervous. I guess I'm wrong, but as much as I thought it today, I couldn't get over it. So, I want to be able to make good decisions, take care of the ball. That's what they've been thriving on and when given the opportunity to make the most of it, however many that may be, if any. And similar but yet different, I felt a lot like I did when my dad passed away. But both games I played well, so maybe that's a good thing."
(In the pregame you stayed in the locker room longer than usual? Do you just try to avoid the media circus?) "Yeah, I said I've got a lot of friends on that team, but I knew everywhere you go there's a camera in your face. The only reason I go out, I'll be 40 on Saturday, I think, and I need to go out and kind of get loose and throw the ball a little bit, but I felt like it would be more of a zoo than it needed to be."
(Do you think this game will help you prepare mentally for going back to Lambeau Field?) "I don't know. The preparation will be difficult again. I'm not going to really focus on where we play it. It's going to be tough either way, as it was tonight. I hope the Packers fans know how I feel about them. The fans were awesome tonight. I'm telling you man, that place was rockin' all night. But I know what it is like to be on the other side; it's pretty tough. I have been able to see both the good Lambeau and the good and the bad here. I have had them (the fans) cheer against us, but it was awesome here tonight. That was a great environment tonight and it will be in several weeks."
(What were your emotions after that first touchdown pass you threw tonight?) "I don't know. How many touchdowns have I thrown in my career? I've done a little something every time. There probably wasn't much vertical there with Longwell and I. I think I did knock Chester (Taylor) down on one though. That's why I play the game. It's a lot of fun. It never gets old even though I do."
(How much did your knowledge of their defensive players help tonight?) "It would be easy for me to sit here and say it was a big advantage, but I think their scheme, more than anything, enabled us to get some of those big plays. Adrian (Peterson) gets a lot of attention here, as he should, but we have some good receivers and they are able to make some plays that you're not able to see that often. I think more than anything we were able to take advantage of their scheme. Al (Harris) and Charles (Woodson) have always played bump and run and in your face. To take them off of that and play them back has to be a difficult transition for them. But they can do it. They played outstanding. They will make some plays on you, so I had to be very careful. There were a couple of times I had to take a few chances, hoping that on a couple of those pump fakes hoping that they would jump a slant or something. It's nothing against how good they are. I think if anything, that's why it works, because they are so good and aggressive."
(Was it weird seeing those guys at the coin toss? And after the game were you able to talk to Aaron Rodgers?) "Yeah I spoke with him briefly afterwards. I don't know how to explain it. It felt right, but yet I guess I never thought I would be in this situation. And this is going back, and now once again it seems right. Aaron played well. That's what I told him afterwards. I said, Hey, way to battle.' To have to drop back that many times on our defense is hard on anyone. I thought he hung in there. I've been saying all along the guy can play and I think he proved that again tonight. So I just wanted to relay that to him."
(Do you think that you showed everyone that you can still play?) "You guys are going to print what you want. I just did what I was expected to do today. So you make that decision."
(Was the game a big enough emotional release to move you to cry after?) "No. I'm too tired. It felt great."
(How much fun are you having with this team right now?) "Anytime you're 4-0 it's a blast. But I really like this group of guys. We have a lot of fun. We work hard and I told them when I talked with them weeks ago, how good I felt like this football team could be. I thank them for giving me a chance to be a part of it, because I know it's been pretty crazy. More than anything, I wanted to speak to them, but I wanted to prove to them that, I don't know how I am going to play week-in-and-week-out, I have no idea, but I know I'll do whatever I can. I think that they would agree to that now. You have to earn that. I believe I have. I know there are going to be fans out there, Packer fans, and I've said this all along (that there are going to be fans that) like me (and are) pleased. There are going to be those that are unhappy and so on and so forth. Not just Packer fans, but fans in general. I can understand that I guess, but as long as the guys in this (locker) room have accepted me and I give them a good chance to win, that's all that matters."
(When you saw the pressure that your defense put on Rodgers, did it make you even happier you are here now?) "Sure, but I thought he handled it well. I thought he hung in there and made some outstanding throws. That was not an easy game. All I could think about there at the end was how we won last week. Jared Allen is a beast, man. That guy is good by the way, I just wanted to tell you that. Our defense, they are pretty good. I would much rather have them on our side."
(How do you explain that you are about to turn 40 yet your arm still looks like a 20-year olds?) "The arm feels great. It didn't feel that great last year. I'm not going to make any excuses, as the season progressed last year I didn't make good decisions. I did not play as well as I would have liked, and my arm didn't feel very good. It feels a lot better and I feel like it is showing. Probably my best throw tonight was an incompletion I threw on a crossing route to Bernard (Berrian) I think. Or maybe it was the holding call, maybe, Charles (Woodson) on (Visanthe Shiancoe). That is a throw I wouldn't have even come close to completing last year. I probably would have second guessed throwing it late in the year. So it all starts with my arm, first and foremost. If I have to second guess pulling the trigger than I shouldn't be here, and it feels pretty good. Now the rest of me doesn't feel too good all of the time, but I'm still doing it."
(Can you talk about your progress with the wide receivers here?) "Well a lot of the plays we made tonight, believe it or not, we haven't practiced. I've said this from day one it's a work in progress. It's just impossible to practice throws like the fade route I threw to Sidney (Rice) in front of our sideline. That was actually a quick-out and he adjusted it and I gave him a back shoulder throw. We haven't practiced that. It's hard to practice that. In fact, against Cleveland I actually threw a fade route to him and he ran an out; we weren't on the same page. So, getting to know each other, what I like, when I'll throw the ball, some of the things I like to do and reads I'll make is going to take some time and vice versa. That is part of this game. You have to learn on the fly sometimes."
VIKINGS LINEBACKER BEN LEBER
(On his tackle of Packers running back Ryan Grant at the 1-yard line in the third quarter, the first down play of a Vikings' goal-line stand.) "I knew that I wasn't going to make any plays on the fake, and he (Grant) is my sole responsibility in a situation like that, so I was being where I was supposed to be and made the play."
(On the hit on (Packers quarterback Aaron) Rodgers in the first half, were you expecting he was going to come straight at you like that? It was almost like he didn't see you.) "No, he didn't see me. I had a chance to talk to him (Rodgers) during the game, and he said, "I didn't see you." To be honest, I wasn't really supposed to be there. It was kind of a slow-developing play, and I just decided to go. Sometimes you can get those kind of lucky sacks."
(You (the Vikings defense) guys have had a couple of those goal-line stands the last couple years. What is it, when you guys get down there (near the goal line), that you are able to dig in?) "It's a mindset that we don't even have to talk about. Nothing extra needs to be said we all feel it. It's just something that makes this defense great. Everybody knows what to expect, and everyone just gets after it. We have a defensive line that makes it a lot easier."
VIKINGS RUNNING BACK ADRIAN PETERSON
(What did you think of the game?) "It was a good game. (They had a) different defense. Favre, he came out on fire. We knew it was going to be battle. We knew it was going to be that type of game (a) Monday Night with all the hype and build up around the game. So we came out and we did a good job and fought it out for the big win - 4-0."
(Did they give you a lot of that five-linebacker look?) "They did. They had nine guys in the box at times trying to slow the run down. You got to give credit to those guys, they did a pretty good job. But it wasn't good enough. We won."
(What happened on the strip that they returned for a touchdown?) "It was a good play by number 54. It was a good play by him. I just have to do a better job of holding onto the ball. A couple of guys had me spinning, standing up, I had to go down."
(Were you frustrated after that?) "Yeah, for a few minutes, but you've got to get over it. There are going to be situations that come up during a game and it's all about how you respond. At the time, yeah, I was upset about the fumble, but we bounced back and it worked out for us."
(How much extra emotion was there tonight and how much did you feed off of it?) "We defiantly fed off of it. We wanted to get this win to move onto 4-0. Me personally, I can speak for myself, I wanted to definitely get this win for Brett (Favre). It was a big game for him, even though he downplayed it a lot, but you just knew it; you could just see it in his eye. So it is important in the pass game and in the run game that I went out there and did my best."
(What did you think of Brett's play tonight?) "He played amazing. He made some big plays."
VIKINGS WIDE RECEIVER SIDNEY RICE
(It must feel real good to get into the endzone again?) "It was great finding the endzone. I didn't think he saw me at first when I came out of my break but I looked back around and he let the ball go and I was going to get inside my defender and caught the ball right there at the goal line."
(It seemed like Brett (Favre's) vision was amazing out there tonight?) "Yes, as always. We see it all the time at practice. The different things he does to try and take the coverage off of certain guys and then come back to them sometimes while he's not even looking at that guy."
(Where does this rank for you personally, as far as your best game?) "I don't know. I'll let you guys be the judge of that. I'm not into that kind of thing. I just want to win."
(What's been the difference with you and Brett Favre.) "Communication. Coaches talk about communication all the time and that's one thing we try to do throughout the week in practice. Just staying in Brett's ear and letting him know what we see there on the outside in certain coverages."
VIKINGS TIGHT END VISANTHE SHIANCOE
(You guys were balanced offensively tonight. Is that what you want to do so teams just can't load up against the run?) "That's what we want to do. We want to show teams we are a balanced offense; we're not just a running offense. We made it a point to show the Packers that we could throw the ball and to show the NFL that we can throw the ball as well and prevent them from stacking the box the way they do to prevent Adrian (Peterson) from running loose. They stacked the box pretty well tonight; that's why we took advantage of the pass."
(The passing game looked like it was clicking as well as it has all season tonight?) "Definitely. The ball got spread around a lot and the defense couldn't clue in on one go so we took advantage of the mismatches."
(Did they focus more on the run and if so did that open up passing lanes for you?) "They had a lot in the box, probably about nine in the box at times, 10 in the box at times and it really did open up the play-action and the pass game because it was one-on-one on the outside and they played a lot of one deep."
VIKINGS CORNERBACK ANTOINE WINFIELD
(The crowd was excited from the get-go and all the way through. What was the feeling like out there? "It was exciting. It kind of had a playoff atmosphere. The crowd was electric and very loud. We need that. That's a real home field advantage."
(You were flying all over the field tonight are you feeling a little sore?) "I'm just doing whatever I can, whether it's making plays on the run or pass, whatever I can do to help this team win."
(With all the hype around this game, for you to come out and play well on offense and defense, was that a good team win?) "Brett (Favre) did a great job throwing the ball, didn't commit any turnovers. A.D. (Adrian Peterson) was running hard. They were converting third downs, keeping the defense off the field and letting us rest a little bit, and scoring touchdowns. Anytime they can do that, it makes our job a little bit easier."
