PACKERS-LIONS POST-GAME NOTES & QUOTES
PACKERS BLANK LIONS 26-0, IMPROVE TO 3-2
- Coming off of its bye week, Green Bay defeated Detroit, 26-0, at Lambeau Field. The last time the Packers recorded a shutout was Nov. 11, 2007 vs. Minnesota (34-0), also at Lambeau Field.
- The Packers are now 3-1 coming off the bye under McCarthy.
- Green Bay now has a 87-67-7 advantage over Detriot in the regular-season series.
- The Packers collected their eighth consecutive victory over the Lions, while the victory also marked the 18th consecutive regular-season victory over the Lions in the state of Wisconsin. That ties the Redskins' 18-game regular-season home winning streak, also against the Lions, for the longest active streak in the NFL. Including a 1994 playoff victory, the
Packers have won 19 straight over the Lions in the state.
OTHER POSTGAME NOTES:
- Today's paid attendance was 70,801, the 280th consecutive sellout (264 regular season, 16 playoffs) at Lambeau Field.
- WR Donald Driver became the franchise's all-time leader in receptions, surpassing Sterling Sharpe (595 catches). Driver now has 602 career catches.
- Driver recorded his 21st career 100-yard receiving game, fourth best in franchise history. He ended the game with 107 yards.
- WR James Jones' 47-yard TD catch in the first quarter was his first of the season. For the Packers, it was their first touchdown at Lambeau Field on the first offensive possession since the 2007 regular-season finale (12/30, vs. Detroit). The Packers had one touchdown on the first offensive possession last season, which came on the road in Tampa.
- DE Cullen Jenkins recorded his first career interception in the first quarter.
- FB John Kuhn scored his third TD of the season on a 1-yard scoring pass. He now has six career touchdowns.
- CB Tramon Williams' 45-yard punt return was the longest of the season for Green Bay.
- LB Clay Matthews set a new career high with two sacks, the first multi-sack performance by a Packers rookie since Vonnie Holliday had two on Nov. 15, 1998, against the New York Giants.
- For the first time in his career, QB Aaron Rodgers completed five-or-more passes to three different receivers.
- Rodgers threw for over 300 yards for the sixth time in his career. He finished the game with 358 yards, completing 29 of 37 passes. His passer ratting was 113.7.
- CB Al Harris intercepted his second pass of the season, his 21st career (14 with Green Bay). Harris also had a sack in the game, his first since Nov. 13, 2005 at Atlanta.
- LB Aaron Kampman recorded his second sack of the season, giving his 52.5 career.
- RB Ryan Grant had a season-long, 22-yard run in the fourth quarter.
- K Mason Crosby tied his career high with four field goals.
- S Atari Bigby intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter, his first interception since the 2008 regular-season opener.
- Fans attending Sunday's Packers-Lions game donated approximately 22,400 non-perishable food items and $11,511 for the Packers Women's Association's 23rd Annual Food Drive for Paul's Pantry, a supplementary food distribution program for the needy in the greater Green Bay area.
- Green Bay's inactives were Breno Giacomini, Matt Giordano, Korey Hall, Jason Spitz, Mark Tauscher, Jeremy Thompson, DeShawn Wynn and Jarius Wynn.
GREEN BAY PACKERS HEAD COACH MIKE McCARTHY:
(on whether the win takes away from sloppy play at times) "Very important win today, number one, playing at home. I mean, these are things we address as a football team – staying focused on the target and winning at home and winning division games. I felt the game today started with defense. I thought they played at a very high level holding the Detroit Lions to zero points. The ability to play at home like that with great defense has always been the focus. I was very pleased with that. I thought the special teams played very well in their segments. I thought the fake punt was a big play in the game for us. We had a couple penalties on those units, we'll look at that. Offensively, we had a lot of production. But the two big negatives are the sacks and the penalties. So, pre-snap, no excuse. No one feels good about that. But we'll look at the other stuff. But to win at home 26-0, it's a step to get back. It's been 13 days since we've played. I know our football team was excited to get out there today. I thought the crowd was outstanding playing at home at noon. Once again, home wins and individual wins are very important."
(on the run game) "Well, really the attempts going into that point, frankly, their defense has as much to do with that as just the way we went into the game, without getting into specifics. But we moved the football. Whether you do it by run or pass to me is irrelevant. But when you have to run the football when you're in a four-minute offense, when you want to run the football, I thought we were productive. That's the toughest time to run the football, when you need to, and I was pleased with how we ran it in the fourth quarter."
(on implementing a short passing game) "Really, there was planning wise, I thought our plan was very similar this week to the last couple weeks. We're not in sync in the protection aspect of it. I think that was evident with the five sacks. I thought the ability for the quarterback to get the ball out to our perimeter people, let them make plays after the catch is always the focus, and I thought we did that at a high level today. "
(on the key to the defense) "What was the key? Well, playing with favorable down and distances, the ability to stop the run on first down. I thought Dom and the defensive staff had a good plan. There was probably more pressure this week than we've been the last couple weeks. I think it really helps our defense play at a higher tempo. Just really, just guys flying around, and I think we're getting better and better week in and week out defensively. It was nice to have Atari back. He definitely showed up today and had the big interception there in the end zone. But I just really felt that our tempo was up where it needed to be, where's it been at times throughout the season, and it's definitely a performance we can build off of."
PACKERS SAFETY NICK COLLINS:
(on pitching a shutout ) "It was great. Guys went out there with the mentality to just go out there and just play Packer football. We were able to pitch a shutout today. It feels great."
(on having Bigby back in the lineup) "It was big. He's a playmaker, he went out there, got tackles, an interception at the end stopped them from getting in the end zone, so that was huge. Guys were just glad that he was able to be out there."
(on keeping the Lions 0-12 on third downs) "That was huge. You know that was our main focus, we always want to get off the field on third down. That's the money down. When you have the opportunity to get off the field, you've got to go out there and make the plays. Today, every guy out there stepped up and made plays."
PACKERS WIDE RECEIVER DONALD DRIVER:
(on breaking the franchise's all time receptions record) "It feels good. I'm happy. I'm more excited than anything else. It's a long time coming. You know, you never expect it to happen, but it couldn't have come at a better place at home in front of your home crowd. It feels good. Now I just got to wait on Sterling (Sharpe) to call me and see if he wants to congratulate me again."
(on the record being more special because the team won) "Oh, it's always special. You know that's the biggest thing. I don't think it would have felt this good had we lost the game. But it feels good. The good thing about it is my son, before I left the house, he said to me, ‘Daddy, you got one catch to make. That's for the record.' I'm happy I can go home and celebrate with him now."
PACKERS LINEBACKER CLAY MATTHEWS:
(on the shutout performance of the defense) "We came out with a game plan, really, and that was to get after it. Our pressures were designed to just really shut down the run, bring some more pressure from, specifically the outside backer. So we really put that upon us, just trying to shut down the tackles and the tight end."
(on the team wanting to bring more pressure after the last game) "Obviously there are things we had to go out and fix, it's early in the season, to see what we had. One of them was to bring the pressure. So we were able to do that a few more times today and have success, so you know, as an outside backer that likes to rush, hopefully they'll continue that."
PACKERS QUARTERBACK AARON RODGERS:
(on how the team feels about the win) "The defense did a great job. Any time you put a goose egg on the board, you expect to win. We obviously missed some opportunities in the red zone. Mason (Crosby) kicked the ball great – he had four field goals – but obviously we like to put those in the end zone…but any time you get a win in this league we'll take it. It's good to get back on the winning track and hopefully we'll be able to parlay this into momentum going into an important quarter of our season."
(on if they answered some questions that they had about themselves) "We've just got to continue to build off what we do each week. And obviously our offense, I don't think will be completely satisfied when we watch the film tomorrow with the way we played, but we'll clean it up again and be very critical of ourselves and try and build on this."
(on the key to the passing game's success) "I felt personally I was in a good rhythm. We were able to hit some short ones early and then hit some big plays in the third quarter to kind of soften them up a bit. We couldn't run the ball that well in the first three quarters so we kind of had to rely on the short and intermediate passing game. When our shots were there down the field, we usually made the most of them."
(on the pass protection) "There were times where I had a lot of time to throw and times where I was pressured, but I think we're going to be critical on the film and improve and get better."
(on if they're prepared to throw as much as they have every game if the run game continues to struggle) "We've got to do what's working for us, and when they're going to take away the run earlier in the game, we've got to be efficient in the passing game. We were very efficient in the first half, and missed a couple in the second half we'd probably want back; but we're going to stick with what works."
(on if they think they're better offensively in the red zone than they've shown) "I definitely do. It's nice to have a field goal kicker who bangs them home every time, but it's disappointing when – especially you get the ball inside the 10 (yard line) – and you come away with three (points) or nothing. Those can be momentum killers. Thankfully our defense played great today…but when we're playing a team that maybe has a little more experience on offense, we're going to have to cash in those opportunities for seven and not three because those are big momentum swings for the game."
PACKERS GUARD JOSH SITTION:
(on assessing the overall performance of the offensive line) "It's hard to really assess it. We've got to watch the film tomorrow. The most important thing is we got a win. We need to finish some of those drives. We had a lot of drives end in a field goal or turnover. We've got to push through. It starts up front with the offensive line. We set the tempo. It starts with the center and it goes out. We've got to set the tempo and get the tempo going and finish drives."
DETROIT LIONS HEAD COACH JIM SCHWARTZ:
(on the loss) "When something like this happens you can't sugar coat it, you can't blame it on one side of the ball. You have to move on and you have to find a way to make sure it doesn't happen again. That's going to be our objective over the next couple of weeks."
(on the upcoming bye week) "When you go into a bye week a lot of times you want to go in with a good feeling, but sometimes it's beneficial to go in with a bad feeling. We need to set our goal and we have to be determined that this doesn't happen again. We need to get some players back on the field and we're going to use that bye week to try to accomplish those goals."
(on the team's penalties) "Penalties before the snap, lined up offsides, false starts – that's stuff that we have got to put behind us. We did a poor job at that and there's no excuse for any of those things."
LIONS RUNNING BACK AARON BROWN:
(on Green Bay's 3-4 defense) "It was really dominant. They were really fundamentally sound. They weren't about making each and every individual play. They have a lot of team chemistry and that's why they were the victors today."
(on going away from the run after trailing 14-0) "Being down 14-0 you kind of limit yourself because you kind of have your backs against the wall. We can't get ourselves in situations like that because then you are one dimensional and it is easy to play a team when you know they want to pass."
LIONS QUARTERBACK DAUNTE CULPEPPER:
(on the struggles of the offense) "It is very disappointing, frustrating and embarrassing to me. We need to figure out a way to move down the field and put points on the board. It is as simple as that."
(on not having Calvin Johnson) "Calvin is a great player; it is a positive to have him, but we still should have been able to move down the field and put points on the board."
(on Jenkins' interception) "He made a good play. He faked like he was rushing and then made a good play to jump up and grab it. My hats off to him and the rest of the defense for making the plays they made today."
(on what needs to improve over the bye week) "We need to try to get healthy and just get back to the basics. Everyone on this team needs to look themselves in the mirror and say ‘what can I do to get better both individually and collectively?' that makes the team better."
LIONS CORNER BACK DEMARCUS FAGGINS:
(on limiting Green Bay's run game) "I think we limited them from making big plays. Grant is a great running back. Our defensive line and linebackers did a nice job of keeping him from big plays."
LIONS LINEBACKER LARRY FOOTE:
(on the team's defensive play) "To be a good defense when the offense is struggling we have to hold them scoreless, that's the bottom line. We didn't help that cause, we gave up two quick touchdowns early in the first quarter and in this league it's hard to come back from 14 down. It's not impossible, but it makes it even harder."
(on the team's injuries) "It's a problem. I don't want to make excuses, but that's a problem right now. A lot of us are banged up."
(on the team's record) "You can't really start feeling sorry for yourself because this league doesn't care what your record is. Every week they're going to try to kick our face in. It comes down to a pride thing. If you want to stay in this league and you want further your career, you have to perform week in and week out."
