PACKERS-BROWNS POST-GAME QUOTES
GREEN BAY PACKERS HEAD COACH MIKE McCARTHY:
(On the game) "We felt like it was a winning performance in all three phases of the game. We thought coming in to Cleveland that special teams had the biggest challenge. I was pleased with the outcome of holding Joshua Cribbs to his return yardage. The productivity on defense really starts with the ability to win on first down. I think we are doing an excellent job up front. I am very pleased with the defensive performance and I thought we were productive on offense. You always want to score more points, but overall, in all three phases, I am really pleased with our work here."
(On the running game) "Anytime you can continue to run the ball the way we did, it helps. We were able to establish the run early in the game on the first series. Once again, the most important running statistic in my view is attempts and we definitely hit the mark today."
(On establishing the run early on in the game) "I always have a starting point. We go into every football game prepared to run and prepared to throw the ball. Games can go in different directions. I'm ready to go in any direction. I've made mistakes before in trying to tilt my game plan in one direction. Our starting point today was to run the football today and we were able to establish that once again for four quarters."
(On the injuries) "That is my biggest concern coming out of this game. (TE) Jermichael Finley and (WR) Brett Swain both suffered knee sprains. We'll have them tested tomorrow and get more information. That is the one thing that you hate to walk out of here today with. It factored a little bit in that one goal-line stand that Cleveland was able to establish against us. We were out of our goal line offense and we had to generate some things out of different personnel groups that we weren't prepared for. Anytime you lose your fourth receiver and third tight end, it definitely taps into some of your personnel groups on offense."
(On being prepared for the Vikings next week) "We are a good football team and I've always felt that way. We are in the second quarter of our season. The ability to grow and win football games is our focus. I feel like we've accomplished that the last two weeks and we are looking forward to playing the Vikings at home."
(On holding Browns QB Derek Anderson to 99 passing yards) "I felt the ability to get after him and rush his time clock was a factor in the game."
(On the Donald Driver touchdown pass) "They came with a certain type of pressure. Frankly, it was the same look that we practiced. You always feel good as a coach when that happens, especially when the result is a touchdown."
(On TE/LB Spencer Havner's touchdown catch) "Spencer has been around here for three years. He's been playing linebacker but he's a good athlete. He is a utility guy who can do a lot of different things. I was really proud of the way he finished it. I didn't think he was going to make it, but he did a great job finishing. When you throw a delay route, you don't think it is going to go that far. It was a big credit to him."
(On C Jason Spitz) "He had an extensive workout on Friday and didn't have any reaction to it. We felt that he would be best used in a backup situation."
(On QB Aaron Rodgers) "It starts up front. I thought he played with a good time clock today. He had good protection. When you talk about playing in rhythm and with a good tempo, I thought our guys did a good job staying with the up-tempo game and staying with the Browns for 60 minutes."
(On offensive line) "My gut feeling is that they played well. We did a lot of the inside and outside zones. I thought their communication was good. With the injuries, we lost a lot of offense based on what we were able to do. I thought they handled the adjustments well."
(On the penalties) "My view is the same every week. We are going to be aggressive. The pre-snap things – you don't have time for and they won't be tolerated. We'll correct them and continue to push forward."
(On the 12-men on the field penalty) "It was a coaching error. That is my responsibility. We had an injury and communication wasn't accurate. It's kind of a good problem to have because you have players covering for players when someone goes down. The communication should have been cleaner. We had two guys go in because of the injury."
PACKERS LINEBACKER A.J. HAWK:
(On Browns passing game) "We had a good game plan going in and had an idea of what they were going to run and, obviously, having their two top tight ends out for this week changed up things a little bit. We had to feel them out and see how they were going to attack us."
(On getting more snaps this week and how he played) "I felt good, I think the defense played pretty well as a whole today. Most of the time we weren't as consistent as we wanted to be but we felt pretty good on defense."
(On the blocking of the Packers offensive line) ""I think when the offense runs the ball like we were today, it really helps out the team. It keeps the ball away from them [Browns] and really helps out the team. It's a momentum builder, it keeps building and building. When you can do that, your team is going to do a lot of good things."
(On maybe having a different edge from all the criticism) "Not at all, to tell you the truth. I felt real good before the game. I just think everything for this game felt pretty good. I wasn't trying to do anything different, I just wanted to play normal like I always have but I think I had some good opportunities today. Some games you get set up to make some tackles, some games you're not. Today was one of those days where I got to run around a little bit."
(On the criticism and coming out and having a good game) "The funny thing is, the criticism is only when I talk to you guys. It's satisfying to win and actually get in on some plays. As a defense, not giving up a touchdown in two weeks is good, its tough to do against anyone in this league. It's a huge win and we have a big task next week."
PACKERS LINEBACKER AARON KAMPMAN:
(On the team getting better after playing the Browns and the Lions) "I think so; football is a game of confidence. I think that we can draw some confidence from this. Now, in the same breath, you obviously realize that statistically speaking, both of these offenses were not on the top of the NFL. Other teams like Minnesota have played both of these teams and that doesn't hurt anything. It's good to have two big wins; we haven't done that back-to-back with a dominant performance on the defensive side of the ball. That's going to help us heading into a very large game."
PACKERS QUARTERBACK AARON RODGERS:
(On the offensive execution) "We had one drive in the first quarter and we were able to put some stuff together in the second quarter and the defense had a turnover. We ran the ball really well today. The line did a great job and dominated the line of scrimmage—no sacks. When you're doing that, protecting the passer and running the ball, you're going to have success."
(On their 99-yard drive in the second half) "The defense made a great stand there. It would have been a two possession game had they scored the touchdown. I think they were inside the two. For us to go to Greg [Jennings] right away, get going and get a couple runs then the big play, that was big for our offense. We put the game away."
(On running the football) "We've tried to establish the run the last few weeks and haven't had a lot of success. We played a scheme we're familiar with, the 3-4. We've seen it in practice all offseason and all training camp. We had a good idea of what runs we could be effective with. Once we opened up in the second quarter and hit [Driver] on a play that was picturesque of the look we saw in practice. We were laughing about that on the sidelines and [Driver] made a great play to get us going there and we just started rolling."
(On Driver's catch) "They ran the same defense they ran last week against Pittsburgh and [Roethlisberger] had gotten sacked. We call it ‘two slide,' where they bring the safety off of the slot and play cover two behind it. We practiced it to the right during the week. I hit Driver on the run. Actually, [Desmond] Bishop played it better than [The Browns] played it today. He got there quicker. Today, we went long count and I was sitting there thinking, ‘I hope that guy comes because if he comes it'll be a big play.' I threw it quick and he looked quick and the rest was Driver being Driver."
(On Spencer Havner's play) "You know what, I'm so happy for Spence. He's a guy who has been with us on and off the practice squad the last couple years and a guy we moved over to offense. He got a chance to play and I'm so happy for him. Once he broke that tackle I thought for a second he might score and he just smelled the end zone. It's great for him. He made some great plays for us. You know, I've been encouraging him the last couple weeks to have confidence and after he catches the ball to take off and explode. He's got a lot of athletic ability. We saw that. He made the move over to the offensive side of the ball. You couldn't be happier for a guy like Spencer who works his butt off and has paid his dues on the practice squad. He got his opportunities and played both ways for us in training camp. Now, I don't know what Jermichael [Finley's] status is going to be, but he's going to have to keep making plays for us."
(On the team's focus) "I think it was good. I think Mike [McCarthy] kept us focused on the Cleveland Browns. It's tough to win in this league. I don't care who you're playing, especially on the road. This was a weird game, to be honest, on the field. It was a little chippy at times and very quiet in the third quarter to where on third down I can hear myself and everybody on the field can hear me as well. There was a different feel to it. I'm glad we came out and played the way we think we are capable of playing on offense. I think it was our best performance technically. We were productive, there were no sacks and we ran the ball well. We're going to have to carry that over to the next week and we realize what kind of challenge we are going to have facing us."
(On whether the team is back on track) "We played two teams we should have beat and didn't play great against Detroit. But today, I thought we played pretty well on offense. We moved the ball and I don't know what the time of possession was, but I felt like we controlled it, converted third-downs, and we need to carry those things over."
(On the defense)"I teased Dom [Capers] I said, ‘if you don't let them score we're going to win the game.' Last week zero points and this week three points and we kept them out of the endzone. We stopped them and we go 99 yards and put the game away. That was the finale of the game at that point. I love what Dom has brought to this team and the aggressive nature he has instilled on defense. I feel like we got back to the type of football we're capable of. There was excitement, there was dancing, there was celebrating and there were guys looking out for each other. I got my helmet ripped off on the first drive and kind of punched in the face as well. The linemen came over and said, ‘who was it? And we've got your back.' Stuff like that, it means a lot. It means a lot to me and it means a lot to our team. We're a tight-knit group, but I feel like we played with excitement and joy and all the things we should play with. We got back to playing our brand of football this week."
(On gelling as a team) ""We haven't really hit our stride yet. We needed to win those two games to get us in a position to get us back in this division race and start making a push towards November and December. Those are when the playoffs are decided and it gets tougher. We've got some tough games coming up."
(On how prepared they are to play the Vikings next week) "I think we're playing better on offense and defense as well. It's going to be a different type of game. When you're playing up in Minnesota with that noise and the Monday Night Football atmosphere, even though it's going to be a 3:15 P.M. game, but we'll be able to hear the snap count and audible at the line of scrimmage. The playing field will even out definitely."
PACKERS CORNERBACK CHARLES WOODSON:
(On giving up only three points combined after playing the Browns and the Lions) "We know they are struggling a little bit. We feel like this is a game we should win, and came out and dominated. We came out and played well, put points on the board, and the defense kept them off the board. It was a big game for us, but the road will get much tougher. We took care of business today but we still have a long road ahead."
(On the momentum for next week's game versus Minnesota) "There is no momentum in this one. This is a game all in itself so we have to prepare for a very good team. We have done a lot of good things this season but we have to be prepared."
(On preparing for a struggling team offensively) "It's not hard. You have to go about your business every day and think you are playing the best team. You have to do it every week and, if you don't prepare that way, you lose these kinds of games."
(On any players looking forward to next week's game) "No, we feel like early in the season, Cincinnati was the game we should have won and we let that slip away. Thank God we had it in mind when we came to Cleveland that we weren't going to let that same letdown happen. Everybody came out fired up and ready to go and we did what we were supposed to do to get us back on track. We have a big game next week. I don't know if we are on the right track but we have to win."
BROWNS HEAD COACH ERIC MANGINI:
(Opening Statement) "It's a really disappointing performance across the board. I don't think we played very well. I don't think we coached very well. The main thing to me is the way that we played. I thought that we had been making a lot of progress in terms of the type of football that we play. The intensity with which we play, the way that we finish plays, things like that and that wasn't there today. It has to be there every week. It has to be there very week, regardless of what challenges you face throughout the week, because there are going to be challenges every single week that we play. You have to be able to get to that same level when it comes to Sunday, and we weren't there. I thought Green Bay played well and we had some opportunities that we didn't take advantage of, not being able to score on the one yard line, giving up big plays defensively with missed tackles, you can't do that. You can't do it and expect to be successful. You can't."
(On where he thinks the team has improved so far this season) "I thought we were making progress in a lot of areas. I don't think we showed that today, at all. I think at different points we've run the ball well. I think at different points we've done some things defensively that I've really liked. The one thing I haven't liked, that has been consistent, is the big plays. We can't do that defensively and expect to be successful. We can't. We have to tackle better in the secondary. We have to be in the right spots when we're rushing the passer. The quarterback scrambles for a first down again today. You can't do it."
(On if he thought about putting Brady Quinn in the game) "No I didn't today, Jeff (Schudel)."
(On why he did not think about putting Quinn in the game) "Because D.A. (Derek Anderson) was our starter and I felt comfortable with the things that we were doing. That was where my thought process was."
(On if he will consider changing quarterbacks) "I'm going to look at everything. I consistently try to do that. We have to improve in a lot of different areas. [We need to] be able to look at all those things and put together a better performance than we did today."
(On what they can do on offense to make more big plays) "We took some shots today that we didn't connect on. We have to keep being able to take some of those shots down the field. You have to be able to do some other things consistently to draw up the coverage and take some opportunities there. The big plays that Green Bay had today, I'm not talking about where they just threw it down the field and it was a 90 yard completion, it was catch and run plays. It was missed tackles. It was things like that where a short play, the first touchdown was a short completion, eight yards. We don't make the tackle and it goes a lot longer than that. You look at the one to (Donald) Driver, it was a short completion, about three yards. [We] don't make the tackle. You have to be able to limit plays to what they're supposed to be and be able to tackle down the field. If you don't, it's listed as 80, it's where it was caught."
(On missed tackles being by players who missed two days of practice) "Believe me, there were a lot of things this week that were difficult and I understand that 100 percent. I really do, but we get this opportunity and we have to maximize the opportunity that we have. The game wasn't going to change. The time wasn't going to change. We have to be able to maximize the opportunities that we have. There were things that we had to adjust to, but there will be things as we go throughout the course of the season that we'll have to adjust to. We have to do a better job of working through those things and being able to come out here on Sunday, our one opportunity to play, and play better and coach better."
(On if he thinks there are more problems on offense than the quarterback) "I think that we have areas where we can improve every single place on this team, and that's what we're going to focus on, is all those things. We get down to the one yard line, we need to be able to put it in with four tries. We need to be able to do that. We need to be able to kick the field goal without it going off the crossbar to go in. We need to be able to do that. We need to be able to operate efficiently in all those different areas."
(On only using the Wildcat formation once) "We had some other plays that were up and as the score transitioned the way it did, we ended up throwing a little bit more than we had probably talked about. It's not one of those things that we didn't have available. We just didn't use it very much today."
(On what he thinks the biggest problem in the red zone is offensively) "I don't know if I could pinpoint what the primary thing is. That's something that you have to look at as a whole."
(On the drive at the end of the first quarter) "I think the fumbled exchange didn't help us there. The third down play, I thought we had a shot on that. I'm trying to remember the play. It was, I think, a little hook up to (Mike) Furrey and the guy was kind of coming over his back."
(On if the wide receivers are not seeing the game the same way Anderson is) "I don't think it's that, Tony (Grossi). I really don't think it's that. I think again we had some chances, with Mohamed (Massaquoi), caught some shots. I though that Jerome (Harrison) made a nice play on the catch and run there that he had. I thought Michael Gaines made a great catch for being here for three days. I think it's a combination of things. I'm going to look at it all."
(On if there was a miscommunication on the pass to Brian Robiskie that was intercepted) "I'm not totally sure. I'd have to look at that. I'm not sure. I don't think it was a function of miscommunication. I don't know if it was ball placement, I'm not totally sure."
(On Robiskie and Anderson not seeming like they're on the same page) "There was nothing that I can look to during the course of the week where [it would make me think that was] the case, because if it was the case, we would have addressed that in our preparation. Again, I'd have to look at it."
(On if it normal to take a step back after it seems like you are making progress) "There are pains along the way when you're trying to do the things that we're trying to do. You want to be as successful in the short term as possible and you want to be as successful in the long term as possible. There are certain things that have to be consistent, and I really liked our style of play over the last three weeks. Are the results always what I wanted? No, but I like the style of play, the approach. That, to me, is the most important thing that we have to understand week-in and week-out and I don't think that we did that here today."
(On if the officials said why they didn't review the touchdown late in the first half) "No, they didn't. It seemed like there was a lot of time for them to take a look at it and at that point we couldn't challenge. I don't know why."
(On the style of play he is hoping to get from his players every week) "Aggressive, intense, tough, physical, finishing, being able to respond to a successful play that our opponent has and come out and create a successful play ourselves, consistency, execution, communication. Good, solid, sound, fundamental, tough football. Physical football. Intense football. That's what I want every week. That's what I want every single week. We'll make mistakes and there will be plays that aren't executed as well as they should [be] or things that we can do better, but if you play at that level every single week, you give yourself the best chance to succeed."
(On why he thinks the team is not playing the style of football he wants) "I think it's something that we've done really well over the last three weeks, and we've done well at points prior to that. The word, again, is consistent because you have to do it week-in and week-out. Like anything else, that's a skill and you have to keep developing that skill and that ability to approach it the same way during the course of the week and then be able to execute it the same way, or play with that style the same way, each week. It's not an easy thing to do, but it's an important thing to do."
(On what the loss of D'Qwell Jackson does to the defense) "D'Qwell, that's a hard guy to replace. I think he led the NFL in tackles last year, and he was doing a really good job for us this year. It's a lot of experience. It's a lot of reps. It's a lot of work together with the rest of the defense. Kaluka (Maiava) went in and played part of the game in that role. David Bowens went in and played part of the game in that role. We have to find the best combination of those guys. It's not easy to replace a guy like D'Qwell. He's a really talented player. He has a great motor. He's one of our captains. It's not an easy part to replace."
(On if he sees any value in playing the backup quarterback when the game is in a situation like today's) "I've done it a couple different ways over the course of time, in different games, where you may go to the other guy sooner rather than later. There are other times where you want those reps. You want those games reps with that group, because they're important to get and, ideally, the more that you get together, the better you execute as a group."
(On why Anderson stayed at the end of the game) "Really at that point, I was looking to try to generate some positive drives and see what we could do. That was the thought process."
BROWNS QUARTERBACK DEREK ANDERSON:
(On when the game got away) "We didn't execute enough. We didn't take advantage of one-on-one when we had it. We put our defense in a couple of bad spots."
(On interception on pass intended for Brian Robiskie) "I threw it a little bit behind him. The safety sat outside and he came through and made a pretty good play. I could have thrown it a little farther inside and he would have broken it up, instead of intercepting it. It's frustrating trying to make a play and a player gets stuck opening inside."
(On the team's recent bad play) "We aren't good right now. That's it. Period. Flat out. We haven't executed. We haven't done the right things to win ball games. We haven't run the ball effectively, thrown it where we needed too. We haven't protected up front like we need to and caught it when we need to. You can't win like that."
(On translating good practices to game day) "That's what's frustrating. We go all week, put in a lot of hours. We put in a lot of work with our offense, trying to get on the same page. We do fine in practice, it's against the scout team, but it's still a live defense. We catch good, throw good, block good. Most of the time we are on the right page and for some reason we can't take it over to Sunday."
(On today's slow start) "I thought we did pretty well in the first quarter. We put the ball in the right spots and made some plays. I thought the first quarter went well. We will watch the tape tomorrow and have a better idea of what happened."
(On getting frustrated on offense) "We are 1 – 6. The amount of effort that we put into each week, we figure we have everything covered going into the game. For some reason we just can't carry it over to Sunday. It's very frustrating, nobody likes to lose. We have been bad before, but we aren't a terrible football team. It's not that we have bad players or guys that aren't trying. No matter the situation, the guys are coming in the huddle positive. Even when it was 31 – 3, or whatever it was, there was nobody throwing in the towel. We have guys saying, ‘Let these guys know that we aren't quitting.' That's what I love about these guys, they are always going to fight. That's how you build a winner, you stick together when things go bad."
(On if he thought he would be replaced) "No."
(On deceiving the Packers defense at goal line) "That's playing football. I thought I could get Cribbs on a bubble screen, but the defender didn't blitz."
(On the drive at the end of the first half) "We completed a few passes. They brought a little pressure. I thought I had [TE Greg] Estandia across the middle, but a defender cut in front of him and I ended up getting sacked."
BROWNS LINEBACKER DAVID BOWENS:
(On today's game) "We have to find a way to win no matter who it is, what their job is, what their role is; we have to come in collectively and find the win."
(On not making excuses) "Whoever showed up with a uniform on today was able to play and able to contribute. They just beat us. We can't hang this loss on excuses. If you suited it up, you are able to play and make a difference. We can make that an excuse, but I am not going to accept it."
(On the team perhaps taking a step back) "I don't know. We just lost. We have to figure out what happened. One thing is I'm not going to jump ship on this team. We are all together. We win, we lose together. We are going to do a good job this week of figuring out what we need to do to win, how we need to beat teams and how we need to prevent those big plays."
BROWNS WIDE RECEIVER JOSH CRIBBS:
(On Coach Mangini's comment regarding seeing effort on the field) "I saw guys making an effort out there. He has a coach's eye and I play out there with the players. That's his opinion and he's our coach, he's our leader. I can just speak for myself personally. You don't know how much effort a guy can give."
(On the flu affecting the team and a tough week of preparation) "We are all professional athletes and we cannot make excuses for losing to a good football team, for not being prepared, or whatever any other excuse that people can give us. We need no excuses. We played some bad football and turned the ball over. You can't win games like that."
(On fans leaving early and trying to get the fans involved in the game) "It hurts. It is the same thing I try to do for our guys. We might be down, but we still have to play football. I have a lot of fight in me so I'm not going to stop until the last tick of the clock and I am just trying to convey that to the fans."
(On what the offense needs to do to make big plays) "Well, if I knew that, then they would probably have to make me the coordinator. All I can do is what I can control. When they call my number, I have to perform. I don't know the answers to that question."
(On if the team is getting worse) "I am concerned about our football team every time we lose. I am worried about the guys and whether or not they have the will-power to go to the next week knowing that we are going to win. I just try to be a leader in that aspect to give them some of my energy or talk to them and let them know that we are professionals. I am just trying to control what we can control on the field."
BROWNS DEFENSIVE BACK BRANDON MCDONALD:
(On Green Bay's performance) "They just came out and did what they had to do to get the win. Honestly, we were on sound on some coverages. Like I said last week, in the back end if you give up big plays, it leads to points. That was the case this week. They prepared well for us, they caught us with some coverages that they knew we were going to be in. They took advantage of opportunities and they converted them and we didn't stop them like we needed to."
(On the flu hitting the team) "That is just something that happened. I can't sit up here and say that is the reason we got beat. There is no excuse for the way we played. Regardless of the flu or whatever else happened during the week, we still had to come out here and compete and play this game. We needed to get a win and we didn't do that today. Regardless of the situation throughout the week, I don't want to put that as an excuse of why we played the way we did today."
(On the team perhaps getting worse and not better) "Obviously, it's not a good feeling to lose as bad as we have been losing. The record that we have is frustrating as an individual and I know it is frustrating for the rest of my teammates. All we can do is go back and take this film and try to get better."
BROWNS WIDE RECEIVER BRIAN ROBISKIE:
(On the team's situation) "We're going to do what it takes to win. If we have to throw, we'll throw. If we have to run, we'll run, but our biggest concern is winning."
(On QB Derek Anderson's frustration) "That comes with losing, incomplete and dropped balls. I think that its one of those things where we're not doing what were capable of. Week in and week out, we do things that we want to translate to the game, and we just haven't been able to do it."
BROWNS OFFENSIVE TACKLE JOE THOMAS:
(On how much the 46 defense affected the offensive line) "We know how to block it. We've practiced against it, so it shouldn't have affected us, but we didn't do a good enough job making plays against it."
(On being unable to establish the running game) "It is frustrating. Everything we do revolves around us getting things going on the ground and when we can't do that, we won't be successful."
(On the team's struggles in the red zone) "It is always really important to get into the end zone when you get down there close to the end zone. If you don't get seven when you are down there enough times, you are not going to win."
(On losing badly) "We didn't play nearly well enough and the score showed. It hurts to lose when you lose badly like that because you are not even close to being competitive. It isn't a mental thing. It is just a lack of execution."
BROWNS DEFENSIVE BACK ERIC WRIGHT:
(On getting back into things after the car accident) "It was a struggle to get back and just play the game. I was ready to do it and it was just like a new life."
(On his mindset) "I'm definitely happy to be here, happy to be living out the dream, and get another chance. But we just lost another game and it's tough to swallow."
