PACKERS-VIKINGS POST-GAME QUOTES
GREEN BAY PACKERS HEAD COACH MIKE McCARTHY:
(on what he said to the team at halftime) "I'll tell you exactly what I told them. I told them at halftime that the second half was going to be a turning point in our season. It was important for us to go out there and turn this game around and make a run and win this game. I felt that was happening there in the third quarter. We played very poorly in the first half, on special teams and offense. I thought the defense played well outside of Johnny Jolly's personal foul down there that extended the drive. I thought there was a lot of positive things…I thought we didn't tackle as well in the first half as we could."
(on what Jolly was thinking on his first half penalty) "Frankly, I didn't see it. I was told what happened. (It was) not very smart. We had them stopped. Personal fouls in that situation and the way it happened, from my understanding, it's unacceptable, to extend the drive like that and it cost us four points."
(on decision to attempt 51-yard field goal) "What bothered me on the fourth-and-seven was the second-and-two. We didn't do what we were supposed to there and it resulted in an extended third down. I felt that fourth-and-seven with the wind, just with the information that you go with from Shawn (Slocum) and Mason (Crosby) during the course of the game, the obvious was we wanted to make it to a three point game."
(on what he thought of the defense's pressure of Brett Favre) "Well, that's a strength of his and playing with the run game that they have and the ability to get the ball out of his hands, we didn't get much pressure obviously in the first half. I felt that Dom (Capers) was spinning the pressures there. We've got to do a better job winning one-on-ones. As coaches we've got to look at the things that we've done. Hopefully we'll have another crack at these guys down the road. We've got a lot of information. I just felt that the first half, everything that we did wrong, they took full advantage of it. Whether it was the penalties we had, they had zero penalties two games in a row, zero penalties at halftime. We've never led in both games. And you talk about applying pressure, getting a lead at home would definitely help you."
PACKERS TIGHT END / LINEBACKER SPENCER HAVNER:
(on if this was his coming out party) "I don't know. It's cool, it's nice to score, but it would have been a lot better to win."
(on if he thinks defenders will pay more attention to him now that he's making more of an impact) "Maybe, yeah, it's probably kind of hard when we spread it out so much. They might pay attention a little bit more."
(on his touchdowns ) "Both of them were kind of broken plays. One of them was a post route, he (Aaron Rodgers) scrambled to his left and then one was a slant route, and I kind of just sat in the hole and he got it to me."
PACKERS DEFENSIVE END JOHNNY JOLLY:
(on what the team needs to do from a philosophical standpoint) "We need to play hard, no mistakes. That's it."
(on if he thinks Favre got the defense again) "Like I said, we need to play hard and make no mistakes and that's it."
(on if he had to do it over again, with the penalty, would he change anything) "Like I told you earlier, I play on the edge every game. So they made the call, it was the call, we have to deal with it."
PACKERS GUARD / TACKLE T.J LANG:
(on the offense) "We started off slow, the first-half offense. You know, we got a lot of work to do. We felt good coming into the game. You know obviously things didn't go our way. We'll take a look at the film tomorrow and try to fix it this week. We got work to do. We took a step back this week. We're going to need a good week of preparation going into next week."
(on what was going on with the discrepancy of field position) "I don't know, you know they had a couple big returns, we had a couple penalties on returns. They obviously had better field position all day but you know, it's tough, first quarter, first half, we couldn't really get anything going. We want to start fast. We didn't do that today so we got some work to do this week."
PACKERS QUARTERBACK AARON RODGERS:
(on how tough it is to lose to the Vikings twice) "It's tough. You always want to win the home division games. You always want to win your home games, but you know when you're playing the Vikings it's tough to win at their place, but we feel it's tough to win at our place as well."
(on the passing game in the second half) "I started hitting guys that were open. The first half I struggled, missed a couple throws I should have hit. When we get into a rhythm on offense we're tough to stop."
(on why things were disjointed in the first half) "We weren't in a rhythm, I think that's the first thing. That was due to a lack execution. Like I said I was a little bit off in the first half and we were struggling with the field position battle a little bit too. The defense did a nice job getting a turnover and when you play at home you've got to cash those in for seven (points). We had to settle for three unfortunately and we didn't really get the momentum back until the third quarter."
(on getting sacked 14 times in two games against Minnesota) "We've all got to be critical. I've got to take a couple of those on me for sure, but we still battled. We hung in there. It's tough to take that many shots, for sure, but you've got to give them credit. They had a good scheme."
(on if there's any special emotion losing to Favre twice) "I hate losing to whoever's at quarterback for them. I hate losing to the Vikings, especially. (They're) division rivals (and we) don't like those (losses) at home. The crowd was electric tonight. Their support was amazing, kind of carrying us through there in the third quarter. We just could not keep that momentum and could not finish off the drive we had to take the lead, so that was disappointing. It doesn't matter who you play, though, it's tough to lose."
PACKERS CORNERBACK TRAMON WILLIAMS:
(on Percy Harvin's kickoff return yardage) "I just think it came down to us not covering our kicks well today, not filling our lanes like we're supposed to and you know, that, we got to get done."
(on Harvin's return, which was a big momentum changing return) "We just came down from a score and you always want to come down, maybe get a guy, tackle him inside the 20-yard line, or whatever it may be. You know you get a guy to squeeze right through the hole or get a big lane, matter of fact, it wasn't a little hole, it was a big lane. He cut it back toward it and I was the only one there, so only thing I can do is try to make the tackle."
(on if there's a big gap in talent between the Packers and Vikings) "I think we just didn't get it started early enough. First half we came out with intensity. Defensively, penalties kind of negated us a little bit. And then you know our offense didn't really get jumped off until the second half. Anytime you don't play a full game you know it's going to be tough. You know, that we got to get done."
MINNESOTA VIKINGS HEAD COACH BRAD CHILDRESS:
(on the win) "It was about as hotly contested as we figured it to be. It is very difficult to beat a divisional team twice."
(on the special teams) "I can't say enough half way through the season about what our special teams has allowed us to do in terms of field position starts. Jaymar Johnson had a 20 yard punt return. Those are huge swings in field position. All those guys are grinding and doing a hell of a job in believing in the returner and the scheme. It is leaps and bounds compared to last year."
(on what is means to have Brett Favre on this team) "He is a good player. There is no such thing as too many good players or too many tools in the tool box. He is an equal opportunity thrower, he is going to find them if they are open; it doesn't make any difference who it is. He knows the system and he knows how to play the game. He also gives us a little bit of personality in the locker room."
VIKINGS DEFENSIVE END JARED ALLEN:
(on the win) "We just took advantage of opportunities today. For the majority of the game we played lights-out. The third quarter got a little scary for a few minutes, but overall we were able to regroup and close that fourth quarter out in the last two drives."
(on wide receiver Percy Harvin) "That kid is special. His longevity in the league will determine how special he is, but the kid is doing things right now that not a lot of people do and we're blessed to have him."
(on the team's 7-1 record) "It's huge – this is all we could ask for going into the bye. We're exactly where we want to be. We're ahead in the division going into the bye week. This is a team that continues to learn from our victories and from our losses."
(on quarterback Brett Favre) "It's Brett Favre, that's all I can say. The guy is amazing and we're blessed to have him on our team."
VIKINGS QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE:
(on his emotions heading into this game) "It was worse than I thought it was going to be based on how the week went, but it was better than the last game (against Green Bay). We played about as good as we could have played. They are a good team. We played for the most part like we are capable of playing and that is the satisfying thing about the win."
(on his offensive line) "This defense is very impressive. They rush the passer well and do a lot of good things. To play this team and not give up a sack, our offensive line was outstanding."
(on where this team is headed) "We will find out how good we are. We have had some tough tests, and we have responded very well. We are 7-1 and granted that is very good, but we haven't done anything yet. We have put ourselves in a good position at this point."
(on what he misses most about Green Bay) "I had mixed emotions coming in because I know how special these fans are. It is always nicer to be here as a home team. It was loud, and that is what makes Green Bay such a special place. I want to lead this Viking team to the Super Bowl, but I also know that packer fans who make this organization so special and unique will never change. How could you not miss that?"
VIKINGS TIGHT END VISANTHE SHIANCOE:
(on the win) "We came into this game really approaching it like a late playoff game. During the week you could tell everybody really wanted to take focus and really buckle down. It's a great win to go into the bye week. Now we have a little bit to think about – some good things to think about – and prepare for the Lions."
(on his touchdown) "I was in the slot and ran up six yards and turned around in the zone. I saw Favre scramble a little bit so I just shuffled to the side to find some open area and made the play."
