PACKERS-COWBOYS POST-GAME NOTES & QUOTES
PACKERS DEFEAT COWBOYS 17-7
- Snapping a two-game losing streak, the Packers defeated the Cowboys 17-7 after holding the team scoreless for the majority of the game. The Packers are now 6-1 all-time at Lambeau Field against Dallas.
- Green Bay now stands second in the NFC North with its 5-4 record. Dallas falls to 6-3.
- Tonight's win narrows Dallas' lead in the all-time regular-season series to 12-11-0.
- The Packers play at home again next weekend, welcoming the 4-5 San Francisco 49ers to Lambeau. Dallas returns home to host Washington.
OTHER POSTGAME NOTES:
- Today's paid attendance was 70,894. It was the 282nd consecutive sellout (266 regular season, 16 playoffs).
- For the fourth time this season, the Packers' defense held an opponent to under 300 total net yards.
- The Packers' defense came into the game as the NFL's No. 4 ranked defense on third down (34.3%). Dallas converted 3-of-12 (25%) third-down opportunities.
- Green Bay finished the game with five sacks, tying a season best. The Packers also recorded five sacks against Detroit (Oct. 18).
- The Packers recorded a takeaway for the 11th straight game, the second-longest active streak in the NFL. CB Charles Woodson forced a fumble on Cowboys WR Roy Williams in the second quarter, which was recovered by LB Clay Matthews. The Texans lead all NFL teams with a takeaway in 15 consecutive games.
- For the season, the Packers now have 21 takeaways on the year.
- Woodson recorded another forced fumble in the second half on a sack of QB Tony Romo, also recovered by Matthews. For Woodson, it ties a career high in forced fumbles (two), which he has done twice previously in his NFL career, both during his time in Oakland.
- Woodson also recorded his team-best fifth interception of the season. It was the 41st of his career, and his 24th in Green Bay.
- Green Bay's 15-play scoring drive, culminated in a 1-yard TD run by QB Aaron Rodgers, was the team's longest scoring drive (in number of plays) of the season. Its previous best was 11 plays, which it had done on three occasions.
- S Nick Collins recorded his first career sack in the first quarter.
- Packers LB Nick Barnett tied a career high with two sacks.
- WR Donald Driver recorded a catch for the 120th consecutive game, extending his own franchise record.
- TE Spencer Havner tied Driver for the team lead with his fourth touchdown catch.
- With a K Mason Crosby field goal just before halftime, Green Bay avoided being shut out in the first half. The last time the Packers were shut out in an opening half was in 2006 against the New York Jets (12/3), a streak that now spans 45 games.
- Green Bay's inactives were Jake Allen, Biren Ealy, Jermichael Finley, Breno Giacomini, Quinn Johnson, Aaron Kampman, Brady Poppinga and Mark Tauscher. Heading into the game, Kampman had started 97 of the last 98 games, only missing the 2007 regular-season finale to rest for the playoffs.
GREEN BAY PACKERS HEAD COACH MIKE McCARTHY:
(on how much the Packers needed the win today) "Well, it was important for us to get back on track. You know, especially after the past two weeks. You break your season up in quarters. Getting to 5-4 was important. We have a three-game third quarter in my view the way we've broken up the season. And we've talked about this in here already: three games in 12 days. I can't say enough about our defense. That's the vision that we're looking for, especially playing at home. We had some excellent performances across the board, especially against a very good Dallas football team and a hot team and a powerful offense. We had a whole lot of respect for those guys coming in here. But to hold them out of the endzone until 38 seconds, I was very proud of our defense.
(on if he had a sense his team was ready for this game) "You know, you feel like you have your finger on the pulse of your football team. We had a very good week of practice. We had more juggling this week than most weeks as far as injuries and who was up and who wasn't, who was going to be able to come off of the injury list at the end of the week. So, that's always a challenge. We had the young players that we had to get ready to play. So I thought the week of preparation was very good. They were very quiet and focused before the game. And I'm done trying to figure that out. I'd like to be able to sit here and tell you exactly how they were going to play tonight. But they were definitely focused. They played with incredible passion and energy. I thought our defense once again and special teams kept us in the game with all our rough spots that we had offensively there in the first half. I thought it was an excellent team win but it definitely starts with defense for us."
(on what Charles Woodson means to the team) "He's definitely one of our prime time players. Once again with his performance tonight, his instincts, knowledge and his toughness, and play-making ability, obviously he was a big part of our defensive success tonight."
(on what this win can do for the Packers down the stretch) "Stack success. It's a good win versus a very good football team, a football team that has been playing very well. So, it definitely gives us a big nugget of confidence that we can grab onto. But when midnight strikes tonight, we'll be about the San Francisco 49ers."
PACKERS LINEBACKER NICK BARNETT:
(on this being the performance the team has been looking for) "Yeah, we've been working hard all year long to try to get to this level of keeping a great team, a great offense shut down like that. They came strong at the end, but for us to go out there and do what we did all game, we're just proud. We work hard. People have been taking heat, Dom Capers took a lot of heat from a couple of players because we're frustrated. But we still stuck by him and kept riding it out."
(on what they have to do to keep this going into next week's game) "For us to keep playing like this defensively, we have to continue to work hard and stay hungry. You know, we're a blue collar team, everybody knows that, and knows we work hard and sometimes we made some mistakes in the past. It's kind of the building blocks of a new defense. We played great today because we prepared hard and we knew what type of challenge we had to face. And we have to continue that preparation and that type of attitude in order to play out this year."
PACKERS GUARD DARYN COLLEDGE:
(on the 15-play drive) "I thought we got a great rhythm, but I think the fact of the matter is we just kept pushing. You can eventually wear a defense down, it's just a matter of great conditioning, and the guys weren't willing to give up. We converted some long third downs, guys made plays when they had to, and that's the plays we weren't making in the first eight games. We let games slip away, and not because we gave up but because we just didn't make the plays when we just had to have it. Tonight, nobody was going to give up."
(on his ankle injury that he came out of the game for a few series) "The ankle's great. I got kicked by somebody, I'm going to assume I'll watch the tape and it's going to be somebody on my own team. But it slip kicked the leg went numb for a little bit in the ankle and it was a better thing to put somebody else in there that could battle at 100% while I got fixed up. (Evan) Dietrich came in and did a good job."
PACKERS RUNNING BACK RYAN GRANT:
(on the play of the offense) "We were able to do some good things, offensively. Our confidence kept rolling, our defense put us in great position across the board. But we were able to get it done and that's the biggest thing. We were able to come out and when it counted, be efficient."
(on the 15 play drive making a statement in a defensive battle) "Yeah, that was kind of a staple of the game for us. When we needed it most, we got it done across the board. Guys stepped up and followed through."
(on the game serving as a confidence booster) "Guys rose to the occasion. They stepped up when we needed it. Of course we knew that we needed this win. I think everybody knew that we expected to get this win, but we expected to go out there and play ball to earn the win. They knew that Dallas is a good team, they're hot, they've been playing well the last couple games, so we expected it to be a tough one. And first half, it was zero-zero for how long? So we expected it to be that type of fight, type of grind it out type of fight and guys rose on all three phases."
PACKERS QUARTERBACK AARON RODGERS:
(on how a big win this was) "It was a big win for us definitely. We knew (being) 4-4 (and) playing a very good team it was an important time in our season to get back in this race. I think of a lot of people were thinking this was going to be the end of the road for us and going to be a turning point for the negative for us this season. But it was a big win for our team."
(on being the winning quarterback in a big game, especially after recent criticism) "It feels good. I think you've got to give credit where credit's due though and that's to the defense. They played a great game today and shut down a good offense, a very good quarterback. (They) gave us good field position a couple times. I thought our special teams played very well tonight at controlling the field position game, and our offense did just enough."
(on the 15-play touchdown drive) "We kind of said the same thing every drive there when it was 3-0. We said, ‘Hey this is going to be the drive. We need get up two scores here, the defense is playing great.' I think that was kind of the theme, ‘Hey, we need to help our defense out. Let's keep them off the field, let's get up two scores, let's make them more one-dimensional.'"
(on how difficult things were after the Tampa Bay loss) "It was difficult, but I think if you listened to what I said during the week, I had a good feeling about the week. I mentioned more than once I felt like it was our week. We had a good meeting on Monday. The resolve of the team, I think, was tested and I think we proved some stuff not only to our fans, but to ourselves and the rest of the league. A lot of people were thinking this was definitely going to be a Cowboy roll today and our defense played great and our offense did just enough."
(on if he enjoys having a quarterback sneak called on the goal line) "I enjoy it. I feel like I should get in. I didn't have very good technique. I was a little off-balance and kind of turned sideways. Thankfully nobody hit me in the back of the head there. I know Ryan (Grant) and John (Kuhn) might not appreciate it as much, but I enjoy it and the guys blocked well for me."
(on if they made progress on offense) "We still struggled. In the first half we really struggled, couldn't move the ball very well. But I'm proud of the fact (that) when we needed a big drive in the third quarter we came up with it."
PACKERS CORNERBACK CHARLES WOODSON:
(on this being a huge win) "It definitely was a big win. A much needed win, especially coming off of last week's performance, last couple week's performances. Coming out today, seemed like guys had a lot of passion out there today for the game, where it came from, I don't know, but we were happy to have it and got a big win for this team."
(on if this is how the team has to play in order to win games) "Yeah, we got to have that passion every week and just got to show up on the field. And again, today, it showed out there, we played the whole game, all four quarters we played hard. The intensity was there. Never got down at any point in the game as far as emotionally and it was a good win."
(on the difference between this week and last week) "You know what? I don't know and don't really care where it came from. But hopefully this next week, this game, this week being a primetime game, maybe that's what it was, I don't know. But next week, we got to bring the same intensity to the field."
DALLAS COWBOYS HEAD COACH WADE PHILLIPS:
(on the loss) "Well obviously we didn't play well enough (to win). Their defense did a really good job against our offense. We had trouble moving the ball for various reasons. We just didn't execute as well as we had been and that is what cost us the ball game."
(on the offense) "We had a lot of drops today. I am not sure Tony (Romo) was off as much as we just had some drops. Those were plays that we would normally make. We didn't run the ball very well. We started out running the ball well, but then we didn't run it well enough, especially on the road."
(on where Dallas goes from here) "We just get back to work. We need to get back in a better rhythm. We play at home next week, which I think will help us. It is a tough league and I knew it would be tough here in Green Bay."
COWBOYS LINEBACKER KEITH BROOKING:
(on the loss) "We were on a roll winning four in a row and this is just a minor hiccup – that's the way you have to look at it. We just have to go back to the drawing board, look at the film tomorrow then get back to work on Wednesday."
(on the Packers defense) "We got beat by a good team today. They played well defensively. Bottom line – their defense outplayed our defense. We played well at times defensively, but when your offense is struggling and the opposing defense is playing so well like that, you need to create a spark in the game to hit that momentum, and we couldn't create that spark to ignite the fire, and that's kind of what it boiled down to."
COWBOYS QUARTERBACK TONY ROMO:
(on if the offense was out of sync) "I think that is a fair assessment. We made far too many mistakes. I don't mean just penalty-wise, obviously that is going to hurt you. We shot ourselves in the foot with mental mistakes. We just did too many things that were out of character for this football team and that is too much to overcome when you continually do that throughout a football game."
(on if Green Bay's 3-4 defense caused confusion) "Their defense is good. They have a good scheme. I don't why we made so many mistakes, but you have to give credit to Green Bay. We are all going to look at ourselves and learn from the negatives today and we will use it to improve. It is disappointing that it takes a loss in a tough game like this to have that happen."
(on if Dallas's offensive line had breakdowns) "We had everything today. We had breakdowns in protection, we had penalties, we had drops, and me throwing an interception. We had different areas throughout the game where we all had our own things that we wanted back."
COWBOYS TIGHT END JASON WITTEN:
(on the loss) "We knew they were a good team, and they're a good defense. We were prepared for them, but we just didn't execute the way we needed to. We can't make any excuses, we just need to evaluate and get better from it. There's a lot of football left to play and we just have to move forward."
(on the Cowboys offense) "We just didn't make enough plays. I felt like Tony was doing a good job putting us in good positions, but we just couldn't execute when we needed to."
(on the Packers defense) "When we were down like that, they were able to pin their ears back and come all different directions. They've got a good scheme. They put Woodson on me and I couldn't get off of him, he did a good job in coverage."
REFEREE JEFF TRIPLETTE:
(What specifically was challenged by Dallas on the fumble?) Dallas was challenging that their player had recovered the football loose in the field of play and was down by contact. My mistake, that's not a reviewable aspect of a play. A recovery of a loose ball in the field of play is not reviewable by rule. So we just couldn't review it.
(Why isn't it reviewable?) Fumbles in the field of play – recovery of a loose ball in the field of play is not reviewable by rule.
(That has been the rule all along?) That has been the rule (since) replay came back.
(Did you start to review the play?) I got over to the review and we started talking about, with my replay guys, that I'm not sure we can review this. It starts going through your mind, I'm not sure we can review this. And then I started thinking about by rule, you can't review a recovery of a loose ball in the field of play. It was my mistake to allow him to start the challenge. I should have just talked him out of it before we started.
(And the Cowboys didn't lose a challenge?) They don't lose a challenge. They didn't lose a challenge or a timeout. So they didn't lose anything. We just lost a little game time.
(Did you start to review the play?) No, no, no, no, we never got to the film. We never got in the booth to review. Just put the headphones on and started talking through what we had.
