PACKERS-RAVENS POST-GAME NOTES & QUOTES
PACKERS WIN 27-14 OVER RAVENS
- Looking to maintain its position in the chase for a Wild Card playoff berth, the Packers beat the Ravens 27-14.
- Green Bay improves to 8-4 and stands second in the NFC North. The team is now 5-2 at home, winning 18 of its last 25 regular-season games at Lambeau Field.
- With a strong defensive effort that included three interceptions and three sacks, Green Bay powered past Baltimore in the Monday Night Football showdown to extend its winning streak for four games.
- The Packers now travel to Chicago to take on the Bears this Sunday, Dec. 13, while Baltimore hosts Detroit.
OTHER POSTGAME NOTES:
- Today's paid attendance was 70,286. It was the 284th consecutive sellout (268 regular season, 16 playoffs).
- Surrendering only 185 total net yards, the Packers' defense maintains their ranking as the NFL's top-ranked unit.
- LB Clay Matthews forced the second fumble of his career in the first quarter. It was recovered by S Nick Collins, his first defensive fumble recovery in his career.
- Collins recorded his fifth interception of the season in the first quarter.
- Matthews finished with two sacks, improving his team-high total to seven, which is also tied for the lead among NFL rookies.
- For the Packers, it was their 15th consecutive game with at least one takeaway, the NFL's second-longest active streak behind Houston (18 straight).
- QB Aaron Rodgers threw an interception in the first quarter, snapping a streak of 133 consecutive passes without an interception. He finished with 263 passing yards and three touchdowns.
- TE Jermichael Finley recording the first multi-touchdown game of his career and now has three on the season. He tied a career high with seven receptions.
- WR Donald Driver caught a TD in the second quarter, the 50th touchdown of his career (49 receiving, one rushing). For Driver, it was his 123rd consecutive game with at least one catch, extending his franchise record.
- The Ravens produced 72 total net yards in the first half, the fifth time this season the Packers have held an opponent under 100 total net yards in the first half. They also have held an opponent under 100 total net yards twice in the second half.
- LB Brad Jones recorded his first career sack, becoming the third rookie to record a sack this season, joining LB Clay Matthews and NT B.J. Raji. The last time three Packers rookies recorded sacks in a season was 1987.
- With Jones and Matthews both recording sacks, it marks the first time two Packers rookies have recorded sacks in a single game since Nov. 15, 1998, when Vonnie Holliday (2) and Jude Waddy both had sacks against the New York Giants.
- The teams combined amassed 310 yards in penalties (Green Bay, 175, Baltimiore, 135), an all-time Packers record. The previous record was set on Oct. 21, 1945, when Green Bay (184) took on the Boston Yanks (125). That game had 309 total yards in penalties. The 310 yards ties the second-most penalty yards in a single game in NFL history.
GREEN BAY PACKERS HEAD COACH MIKE McCARTHY:
(on the significant number of penalties called on both teams) "Well, it's interesting that's the first question, but yeah definitely. The penalties were unbelievable for both sides. I thought it was a tightly officiated football game (with) two competitive, physical football teams. That is the game we anticipated coming into Monday night throughout our preparation. We had a lot of respect for the way they played on film. And that's the style of play we wanted to take into the game. That's where that is. But I'll say this about our football team: I was very proud and excited the way they overcame the adversity throughout the football game, whether it was overcoming penalties, being in a long down and distance situation, or being on the one-yard line, overcoming giveaways, overcoming takeaways. The adversity that we overcame throughout the football game is something that we will definitely carry forward with us as a football team."
(on the run defense) "It starts with our defense. That's the face of our football team. That's way we want to be identified with, particularly starting at home. To play great defense at home, it's huge to have the crowd behind you. It's something that I think we are doing a much better job of this year and it starts with the run defense. We had a lot of respect for the run game coming in. They gave us a lot of unbalanced lines throughout the preparation, more unbalanced lines than we've ever seen. So they really challenged us schematically, the bunch of shifts and motion and so forth. But I thought our guys played outstanding up front."
(on the play of BJ Raji, Clay Matthews, and Brad Jones) "They're all contributing. They're getting more and more play. They fit right into the plan. We talk about winning football games, playing December football. That's the way we want to play, the way we played tonight here at Lambeau Field. We're going to have an opportunity here shortly down in Chicago in some tough weather. But those guys, they're improving, they're getting better, they're quality reps, they're producing. And you just cannot have enough of those guys. We're happy with the progress we're making with our rookie class."
PACKERS TIGHT END JERMICHAEL FINLEY:
(on his first touchdown) "I lined up in the backfield and I motioned out to the left. A-Rod (Aaron Rodgers), before I left the huddle he said, ‘Time your jump, it's coming,' so I just had to make a play on the ball."
(on his first multi-touchdown game) "Oh yeah, I love it. Monday night, that's when you got to show up. Big players show up on big stages. So that's what I had to do, you know."
(on how the first touchdown felt) "It felt great. That's when I started rolling. If you can get a little one yard route, that's when you get your groove on. So just like a quarterback, if you can get a long ball, he's going to get it going. That's what we did tonight."
(on the team's confidence level being at 8-4 heading down the main stretch) "Oh yeah, 8-4 and looking good. We just gotta keep it going, keep it rolling on through these last four games."
PACKERS OUTSIDE LINEBACKER CLAY MATTHEWS:
(on the play of the defense) "This defense is really clicking as of late, with a new year and a new system, 12 games in, we really feel like as a defense, things are clicking. We're understanding where our other teammates are going to be, we trust one another, and we've all bought into the system. And as you can see, we're up there in overall defense, and we're real proud of that. We're looking to keep that up each and every week. You see the defensive guys take a lot of pride in those stats and being well respected as a defense."
(on the defense answering the call when momentum had swung to the Ravens) "He (Tramon Williams) was able to come through in the clutch. The defense was able to break the momentum shift in which they had with the penalties and all. But you know that's what we pride ourselves on, is making big plays and creating turnovers and giving the ball back to our offense."
PACKERS QUARTERBACK AARON RODGERS:
(on if he's happy with the way they handled in-game adversity) "We did hit a little spot there where we couldn't move the ball and they got some points, but you've got to give their defense credit. They're a veteran defense who's been together for a while. They were minus Ed Reed tonight, but Ray (Lewis) is very good at diagnosing stuff at the line of scrimmage and they brought a lot of pressure tonight and did a nice job. Unfortunately we turned the ball over too many times and kind of had a chance there to put them away. We had that drive where I hit Donald (Driver) and we fumbled. We've got to take care of the ball a little bit better, but when our defense plays like it did tonight we're going to be tough to beat."
(on if the cold weather was a factor with the dropped passes) "Those will happen from time to time. We've done a nice job this season of kind of eliminating some of those drops. We were very close tonight. It was a very choppy game, I think, at times – a lot of penalties, seven turnovers. We just really didn't get into a rhythm until (the) second quarter and kind of got some stuff going on offense…and then just couldn't really find that rhythm in the second half unfortunately."
PACKERS CENTER SCOTT WELLS:
(on what's changed since the Vikings games) "Well for one, I think our execution has picked up. We've become more of a two-dimensional offense than we were before. We weren't running the ball very effectively in the first half of the season, but we've picked that up. Tonight we would have liked to have run it a little better, but over the games leading into tonight we ran the ball much more effectively. The pass protection has improved dramatically from where it was and our defense has just been playing stellar."
(on winning a game "ugly") "Yeah it definitely wasn't our cleanest game, but a win's a win in this league, and you've got to find a way to pull them out. Each one is so critical and to be able to come out in this environment and overcome our own mistakes was huge. That's something we weren't able to do earlier in the year. We turned the ball over more times than we have, I think, in any other game, and our defense came out and did an excellent job of getting the ball back for us. Sometimes defense has got to carry it and sometimes the offense has got to carry it, and right now what we're doing well is when each phase has to step up, they're stepping up at the critical times."
(on if he likes where they're sitting at 8-4) "I like it a lot better than 7-5 would feel. I'm happy we got the win tonight, (so we can) enjoy tonight and tomorrow get ready for the next opponent."
(on if he likes where they sit with four games to go) "We control our own destiny so that's always kind of what you want. I think we've done a nice job winning the last three home games, knowing what we've had to do."
(on the offensive line gelling at this point of the season) "It's at the right time, it really is. After the Tampa game – you don't want a loss to really get your guys going – but I think it really was a wake-up call for us and we've won four straight since then (and) really have a good confidence about ourselves."
(on Jermichael Finley) "He's done a great job for us. He really adds an extra dimension to our offense and opens things up for Greg (Jennings) and Donald (Driver) and James (Jones) … Having Jermichael out there just gives us another weapon and you've got to kind of figure out how you're going to guard him."
PACKERS CORNERBACK TRAMON WILLIAMS:
(on having a pair of pass interference penalties that put the Ravens on the one-yard line, but then coming up with a huge interception in the end zone) "You know, it's a game, a tough game out there. You're going to get some calls you don't want sometimes. You've just got to keep playing. I've got a short term memory, and that's one of my advantages on the field."
(on what he saw on the interception) "He (Flacco) was being flushed toward the sideline, my man was going across the field and he stopped and tried to go back across the field and I saw him. So I played back and I went with him. I saw Flacco's eyes turn this way and I was like, "Man, it looks like he's going to throw it." So he threw it and I was there."
(on how it felt to get that interception) "Oh man, it felt great. I can't lie to you, it felt great. It just felt great making a play for my teammates at the same time."
BALTIMORE RAVENS HEAD COACH JOHN HARBAUGH:
(on the loss) "It obviously was a tough loss in a tough environment against a good football team. Our guys fought back. We were down 17-0 at halftime, we got it back to 17-14, but we didn't do what we needed to in the red zone to get it done."
(on the Ravens playoff outlook) "We are fighting for our lives right now, but we are still breathing. We are still alive. I think our character and heart will show through as we finish up the season."
(on Green Bay tight end Jermichael Finley) "It is tough to cover a tight end. Sometimes they will get you in a base package and have a guy out there who is probably more of a receiver than he is a tight end. They took advantage of that."
RAVENS QUARTERBACK JOE FLACCO:
(on his fourth quarter red zone interception) "I think it was a stupid decision and a worse throw. It was second down, so you don't really need to make a play there. You can give yourself another shot on third down and still kick a field goal. I didn't set my feet, I didn't get enough on the ball, and I under-threw it to him."
(on Green Bay's defense) "They are a good defense. They have good guys on the outside and they were able to get a little bit of pressure. They played well."
(on containing Ray Rice) "They made sure they did a good job of following him out on screens and making sure that they had a guy spying him so that he couldn't get any momentum going. You have to credit those guys. We had our chances and we hung in there tough and that is all you can ask for in an NFL game."
RAVENS LINEBACKER RAY LEWIS:
(on the team's penalties) "There are some things we just have to cut out. Whether it's holding…we just need to figure it out and keep on moving. The bottom line is we have to keep playing football and not let that stuff get to you."
(on the loss) "There's no way we can come into somebody else's stadium and turn the ball over that many times. You can't spot anybody at home. The time for spotting people is kind of over. We just need to play football and be fired up from the whistle."
RAVENS RUNNING BACK RAY RICE:
(on playing from behind) "When you're playing from behind, it's hard to get in your regular game plan and do things that you wanted to do. Our defense played great, but it's just so hard playing from behind, especially on the road in this kind of environment."
(on the team's offense) "When we're in a rhythm, we're in a rhythm and we can play good football. We've been proven to move the ball, we just need to do a better job of scoring in the red zone and eliminating little penalties."
(on Green Bay's defense) "They're the No. 1 defense, you can't give them the ball. We'll get it corrected."
