PACKERS-BEARS POST-GAME QUOTES
GREEN BAY PACKERS HEAD COACH MIKE McCARTHY:
(On gutting one out today) "I feel like we won a football game versus a division opponent and our arch rival. It's a great game to be a part of; we really enjoy coming down here and playing. I know they have a confidence playing against us; it was a physical football game. We didn't come down here expecting a blow-out, that's for sure, so we got off to a great start. I can't say enough about our defense. I thought the game started with our defense and it ended with our defense. They are playing at an extremely high level and they were a huge part of our success today."
(On leaving too many points on the field in the 1st half) "I think we definitely left some points on the field during the first half, when your defense is playing that well, and your special teams is doing a very good job with the coverage unit. We had favorable field position, the kick was there in the first half and to only have 13 points, I definitely feel like we left points on the board offensively and obviously with the missed field goal."
(On the running game) ""I felt the run game was really good, I feel like we were able to play a run and pass game against the Bears, they were heavy leaning towards the run as far as the way they were playing, that's when we went to a different format as far as running the football. I was pleased with our overall play. On third down productivity, which has been a strength of ours, we did not play to our level today. We had favorable down distances on third down that we didn't convert."
(On Ryan Grant) "It was great to see Ryan get on the second level and finish the run; you can't start the game any better than that. He is a tough hard-nose runner, he's very consistent, he's over a 1,000 yards for a reason. I thought Ahman (Green) gave us a good punch with his opportunities. We feel like we have a good mix there, we feel like we have a lot more confidence than we did earlier in the season, but definitely the red-zone and third down wasn't where it needs to be today."
(On Collins' interception and the current state of the defense) "It's fun when you're exactly right with the play calls, whether you call them on offense or defense and Dom (Capers) was very aggressive throughout the day, you can see that all the way up until the last play, so we were able to hit the corner blitz and they can't play that any better when the quarterback forces the throw. Our defense is in rhythm, their play tempo and play speed and Dom is keeping his foot on the gas, there is a confidence and trust there and once again, I think this game started and ended with our defense. I'm very pleased at where we are playing on defense."
(On post season hopes) "I feel good, there is only one goal here, that's never going to change, we're focusing on getting to 10 wins and we fully expect to play in the playoffs. We talked about it as a football team and I told them not to get involved in it until we get 10 wins, you would be wasting your time. The playoff picture changes so much from week to week, it's nonsense for us to talk about it, so that's our approach. We are working on winning football games and being aggressive with our playing, our players are executing. I like the bounce in our step, we're confident, and relatively healthy coming out of this game. We need to get ready to go to Pittsburgh; that's going to be another tough football game."
PACKERS LINEBACKER NICK BARNETT:
(On the five-linebacker defensive package today) "Dom (Capers) is a very creative defensive coordinator. With five linebackers out there, it was fun. We have some great defensive lineman too, so we don't want to keep them off of the field too much, but it was a good look. It was actually invented this week. I think the thinking behind that is that we have some guys hurt, and we didn't know what it was going to look like on third downs, as far as who we had out there, and it just so happened to look good in practice that we decided to run it in the game. I thought it (went well). Cutler got a little anxious when he saw it, so we'll just keep working."
PACKERS KICKER MASON CROSBY:
(On missing kicks recently) "We got the win, so it's one that didn't come back and hurt us. I have to be happy about that. This team is playing lights-out, our defense is unbelievable. It's disappointing missing those kicks. We need to make those; I need to be better."
(On the missed field goal) "It just went right. It has happened a couple of times, just not finishing through. It's disappointing not hitting those."
(On whether he kicks better from the left or right hash) "I don't know. The stats may say otherwise; the left hash has been better than the right. It's not a comfort level; we've just have some situations where kicks aren't going through."
PACKERS RUNNING BACK RYAN GRANT:
(On the offensive performance) "We're close, but we have to clean some things up. We need to score more touchdowns. The defense did a great job all day of putting us in wonderful field position. I'm not sure what our average start was, but it was close to the endzone, and we should have put the ball in the endzone a few more times. But, we're glad we got the win. We knew it was going to be this kind of fight; it always is against the Bears or any division opponent in this type of atmosphere. It's never going to be easy, and I'm glad guys dug down deep when it counted the most and fought through, and once again, our defense was phenomenal. We have to pick our end up a little bit more, but they're playing their butts off and really putting us in a good position."
(On the team's changes since the Tampa Bay loss) "We're playing better football. We're getting in the groove and playing with confidence, and it's a legitimate confidence, and we've been finishing as a team. We've had some lulls here and there throughout the game, and we have to take care of that. You can't have those and let teams stay in the game like that. But, we'll take wins and keep moving forward. We'll break it down and critique them and get better in these last couple of weeks."
PACKERS WIDE RECEIVER GREG JENNINGS:
(On beating your rival) "Anytime you're playing a division rival, you can throw the records out the door. They fought hard. It's always a game. Our defense kept us in it again; they came up with a big game, and we came up with a big win."
(On the difference between today and the first meeting with the Bears) "(The Bears) played a lot of Cover-6 [zone] the first game. This game they played a lot of Single-High, which we kind of knew they would because of the field situation and the weather. It seems like every time we come here the weather is bad, but today it was actually pretty good. But, they kind of squat and sit on things a little more, and they pretty much make you run the ball. So, that's what we were able to do, and we got out of here with a win."
On not getting the ball in the end zone more "It is definitely a minor concern, but I wouldn't say it's a major concern yet because we have been able to win. But, it is definitely a concern. You definitely need to be able to get the ball in the endzone. You can't rely on three points. That's what keeps teams in the game. What we've been doing the past three games is allowing teams to stay in the game because we can't get in the endzone and score touchdowns. So, we definitely need to get there more."
PACKERS LINEBACKER CLAY MATTHEWS
(On playing against Chris Williams) "It was a good battle for the most part. He's a big guy, a physical presence. I was able to get past him on a few plays, almost get to the quarterback.
(On Chris Williams' personal foul) "I don't hold any grudges."
(On whether the Green Bay confused the Bears' offense) "I'd like to think so, definitely with Charles' [Woodson] interception. When you have moving parts all over the field it presents a real different situation. With DBs moving all over the place, you'd like to think it presents a problem for the quarterback."
(On the defenses' play this season) "We take great pride in our defense and that stems from all of the players we have in here. We're all competitive and we like to be known as the best. We look forward to coming out here every week, shutting down the run, getting after the quarterback."
(On the defense's ability to come up with big plays) "We've got play makers all over the field and they understand their role within this defense. We make some opportune plays at opportune times. We know what's at stake when they have two minutes and four downs."
PACKERS CORNERBACK CHARLES WOODSON
(On the team's use of corner blitzes) "I don't know how many times we did it during the game. It's good though, as it keeps teams off-balance rather than just coming up the middle. It's big for us."
(On the defense using new schemes) "It gets everybody involved. Today we dialed it up and got two big plays out of it. It keeps everyone in the game."
(On his season so far) "It's been good, had a lot of fun, and made a lot of plays. The team is winning. It just all goes together."
(On how many more career INTs he could have made) "If I had been in this defense, I don't know. It would be a large number. Trust me."
CHICAGO BEARS HEAD COACH LOVIE SMITH
(Opening Statement) "First, you have to give the Packers a lot of credit. They made plays down the stretch to win the football game. I thought our guys played hard. We did some good things throughout the game. After starting the way we did, we got ourselves back in position and got momentum back on our side. Normally, in games like this, there are a couple of critical plays that determine who wins and who loses, and we didn't get it done. It's tough. It's tough in the locker room when you have an opportunity to keep our dream alive. To lose a game like this, what else can I say – it's not a good feeling at all. The Packers haven't swept us in a long time, but they made plays today. Injury-wise, we don't have a lot of injuries to talk about. Again, I thought we continued to play hard, but just didn't make enough plays."
(On the timeout sequence) "For the first timeout, things just weren't right and we needed to call a timeout to take care of some things. That is separate. After that, I had to make a decision on the situation about whether it was worth us challenging and possibly getting a first down. I made that decision. In the end, the timeout really didn't hurt us. I think you should use a challenge any time it can benefit you. To me, there were two separate incidents and situations that happened, and that's what we did."
(On why the Bears had a slow start) "I wish I knew. The guys had a great week of practice, and they knew the importance of this game. Things happen. That's about the only answer I can give to you. But, when things do happen, you have to be able to come back, which we did, and get ourselves in position."
(On why he called the first timeout) "Why do you ever call a timeout? When you have a situation that isn't the right play, or just don't have enough time to get things in. Without going into detail, I called it for the same reason you always use a timeout – things weren't right and we wanted to make sure we were in the best situation. Again, after that, it was two separate situations. Then you have to make a decision on whether it was worth possibly getting the first down."
(On Ryan Grant's long touchdown run) "It was really just a basic run. Normally, when there is a long run, there is someone out of the gap or there are bad angles involved. Those were the two things that happened on that play."
(On the play of the Bears receiving corps) "I thought they stepped up today and did a great job. Devin Aromashodu really made plays throughout the game. Johnny Knox also made plays. Just not those two individuals, of course, they haven't played a lot and I really like what they did today. We got ourselves in position and did some good things in passing downs."
(On the interception to Nick Collins) "Without going into great detail on who was wrong on the play, the execution wasn't right, and the Packers made a great play."
(On the penalties) "They hurt. We aren't a team that has been penalized that much. Some of the penalties were in critical situations for us. Whenever you lose yardage on a day like today, of course, that hurts you quite a bit."
(On being swept by the Packers) "This is the first time we've been swept by the Packers [during my tenure]. This is the situation we're in right now. This season hasn't turned out exactly the way we would have liked. This hasn't happened a lot of times, so I don't know quite how to respond to it. But, we just have to do something about it in the future."
BEARS WIDE RECEIVER DEVIN AROMASHODU
(On his play) "It definitely felt good getting that first touchdown and I thank God for that. I wish we would have won the game because that's the main thing."
(On facing Charles Woodson) "I learned that I am able to come out here and compete against one of the top players in the NFL. I'm watching him and I learned a few things that will make me better when defenders try them against me."
(On showing the NFL what he can do) "Yeah, it definitely was an opportunity for me to show everybody what I can do. I'm just happy I was able to take advantage of it."
(On the loss) "It's tough because we want to win every game, especially this one against Green Bay. We have to move on and get ready for next week, work on our mistakes and get a win next week."
(On his rapport with Jay Cutler) "It felt good to get the ball. He threw me some great balls and I was able to make the catch. It definitely felt good."
(On his first touchdown) "It felt real good. It was originally a slant but Jay checked to a fade. We've been working on [throwing to] back shoulder all week so that's where it went too."
BEARS DEFENSIVE END ALEX BROWN
(On what went wrong vs. Green Bay) "When you play a good team you can't make mistakes and we made too many. They capitalized on mistakes. Being in our gaps, that very first play, they took advantage of it. One play and they're up on us seven- to-nothing. We did well by not panicking on that and came back and started playing solid defense, but we cant give up that play."
(On the Packers score on their first offensive possession) "Everybody went in their gap. I've got to see the play. I was out there so I can't really say right now. Somebody didn't do their job. One guy not doing their job can make the defense look bad. I'm not saying it was one guy-it could have been two or three. Even so, we've got to get him down, even if he runs 15 yards, we've still got to get him down. We can't let him go 60 yards. That play hurt us, it hurt us but we were able to come back and take the lead. I think we played solid football, but you can not make mistakes against a good team and that's what we played today, a good team, and we made too many mistakes."
BEARS SAFETY JOSH BULLOCKS
(On finishing out the season) "We've got Baltimore (next) and we just want to go out there and finish the season strong. We already know our hopes and dreams are pretty much gone right now. This is a tough loss but we've just got to finish this up strong."
(On the Packers opening play on offense) "Exactly, I don't know. We were in man-to-man. My man went in motion across so I went with him and the next thing I know I see the running back heading the opposite direction down the field. Obviously there was a bust but I don't know what happened."
BEARS QUARTERBACK JAY CUTLER
(On the interception to Nick Collins) "Johnny Knox did well. I just have to either throw it out of bounds or let it go sooner."
(On overcoming a 13-point deficit but letting the lead slip away) "We did some good things out there. We had some turnovers and some penalties. It seems like every time we got something going, something bad happened. This is something that has happened all year to us. It's hard to be a good offensive team when that happens."
(On his frustrations) "There are a lot of things that are frustrating. We have a whole list of them. When you boil it down, we aren't producing offensively and we're not winning ballgames."
(On the play of Devin Aromashodu) "He was put in some positions today to make some plays. If Devin [Hester] was out there today, I think the same thing would have happened. He made a great adjustment on the touchdown. He is a bigger guy, and it makes it a little harder for the defensive backs with a big body like that.
I know everything that Devin [Aromashodu] can do on the football field. We're just going to keep giving him opportunities to do it."
(On the Packers adjustment after his second touchdown) "The whole game is a game of chess. The whole game is adjustments and counteracting. Some of it is guess work of what they are going to move into. That's how the whole game goes."
BEARS LINEBACKER HUNTER HILLENMEYER
(On Ryan Grant's touchdown run) "We did some good things but you can't let that happen on the first play of the game. It's inexcusable. It was a simple play and one we've seen a hundred times this year. It shouldn't happen. It's obviously disappointing. We did bounce back and had a chance to win the football game. We got the lead back and honestly, that frustrates me more than giving up the touchdown on the first snap. If you get a lead, you should win. We've had a lot of leads in games we've lost this year."
(On bouncing back after that) "No, there's no moral victory in the NFL. It's about wins and we didn't win. We've had a lot of those games where it comes down to the wire but we can't seem to get it."
(On the season) "It's been frustrating. It sounds very obvious. It's been déjà vu every week, especially against our rivals at home. I think we had a really good idea of how they were going to attack us. If we would have executed then the outcome should have been different."
BEARS WIDE RECEIVER JOHNNY KNOX
(On what happened during the interception) "They gave us a different look. It looked like the corner was coming but he didn't. He trailed behind me and just made a good play on the ball. I thought it was two-man so I tried to make a different adjustment but we weren't able to hook up. It's frustrating when you and your quarterback aren't on the same page because you want to be. We want to have that confidence in each other and be on the same page but sometimes it's just not there"
(On his performance this season) "We got some different looks at the beginning of the season but it kind of slowed down in the middle. Some games I am going to get the ball and some games I'm not. I have to keep playing my role if I get the ball or not."
(On Devin Aromashodu's performance) "He did a great job. [Devin] Hester is a big playmaker on this team and he was injured. Its times like that when guys are going to have to step up and play big. Devin [Aromashodu} did that."
BEARS TACKLE CHRIS WILLAMS
(On the offense not getting in rhythm) "Any time you get penalties, especially stupid stuff - like I had a false start. Anytime you get stuff like that, it puts you behind the sticks. It's already hard enough to get first and ten, now you're first and fifteen, you're behind the chains. It makes you predictable as an offense."
