Common Opponents Within Division
At the NFL Spring Meeting on May 22, 2001, in Rosemont, Ill., NFL owners unanimously approved realignment, coinciding with the Houston Texans' 2002 debut. The 32-team league calls for a harmonic scheduling rotation, in comparison with awkward formulas used in previous seasons. Each team within a division now plays 14 common opponents, as follows:
- Each team plays home and away against its three division opponents (six games).
- Each team plays the four teams from another division within its conference on a rotating three-year cycle (four games).
- Each team plays the four teams from a division in the other conference on a rotating four-year cycle (four games).
- Each team plays a pair of intraconference games based on the prior year's standings (two games); i.e., first-place teams in a division will play against the first-place teams from another division within the same conference, etc. (two games).
