David Armour Of Malcolm X Academy Named Packers High School Coach Of The Week

Posted Oct 12, 2005

David Armour, coach at Malcolm X Academy High School, has been named Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week, the Packers announced Wednesday.

Armour, a parent specialist at Malcolm X, coaches 34 varsity players. In its first year of varsity competition, the Milwaukee school is playing an independent schedule made up of six of 2004's playoff teams. All of Malcolm X's games are played on the road.

In his second year with the Maroon, Armour, a graduate of Milwaukee South Division High School, playing under coach Wiliam Bartholmew, and Concordia University in Mequon, Wis., playing under coach Courtney Meyers, played for and later coached the semi-professional Milwaukee Express and Flames. After a stint with the Athletes for Youth League in Milwaukee, he entered his current post at Malcolm X.

"I'd like to thank the Packers for considering me," Armour said. "It's been a long, rough season but we're taking all of the struggles we had in stride. I'd like to thank all of the coaches we played this year. They were great guys and great competitors and they brought their 'A' game. The team really learned from it so they can play better next year."

Malcolm X currently offers grades eight through 11, adding the 12th grade in the 2006-07 academic year. With only a freshman squad in 2003, the school has brought together the varsity team in just two years. Armour is assisted by Mark Jones, Dayrall Barnes and Aristevet Bratchett.

Currently 0-4, Armour is looking forward to growing his program each year. The Maroons are next in action tomorrow evening at Brown Deer High School.

"We look forward to next season," he said, "to growing into a bigger and better program. I'd like to extend my thanks to my coaching staff, my principal and everyone who made this possible."

The Packers will recognize one outstanding high school coach as their 'Coach of the Week' winner during the 2005 high school football season. Coach of the Week winners are awarded several items and privileges, including a $1,000 donation to the school's football program from the Green Bay Packers and the NFL, as well as recognition of the award on www.NFLHS.com, the NFL's high school football Web site.

Nominations for Coach of the Week should be submitted by 9 a.m. every Monday to Cathy A. Dworak, manager of community relations, at coachoftheweek@packers.com (e-mail) or by fax at (920) 569-7302. Please include the nominee's name, address, school, phone number and reason he/she is deserving of the award.
