David Kliemann saluted Saturday for Operation Fan Mail

Posted Jan 5, 2013

The Green Bay Packers and WPS Health Insurance paid special tribute to U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander David Kliemann during Saturday’s Packers-Minnesota Vikings Wild Card playoff game for ‘Operation Fan Mail.’

Kliemann, a native of Wind Lake, Wis., was commissioned as a naval officer in 1993 after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., with a degree in computer science.  He earned his Naval Flight Officer wings in 1995 and served two tours flying in P-3C Orion Maritime Patrol Aircraft.

Throughout his career, Kliemann has been deployed three times to the Western Pacific in P-3C squadrons and twice to the Middle East aboard the aircraft carriers USS Enterprise and USS George HW Bush. Kliemann most recently served as the Strike Operations Officer and has also served as an Information Operations Planner and as a flight instructor.  He is currently serving as the director of the Navy Red Team, charged with protecting Navy computer networks from cyber-attacks.

Kliemann has earned several awards during his long career, including three Navy Commendation Medals, an Air Force Commendation Medal, a Navy Achievement Medal, five Sea-Service deployment ribbons and an Overseas Service Ribbon.

Kliemann has a master’s degree in technology management and an MBA from the University of Maryland, and a master’s certificate in information, systems, and operations from the Naval Post Graduate School.  His wife, Laurie, is also a native of Wind Lake, Wis. and currently lives in Virginia Beach, Va. with their two sons, Noah (15) and Adam (13). Kliemann will retire in 2013 after 20 years of service and his family hopes to move back to Wisconsin.

Kliemann attended the game with his wife and sons.

Operation Fan Mail, which debuted in 2007, is designed to recognize families with a member who is on active duty. The Packers and WPS Health Insurance will host a family at each 2012 home game and recognize them on the field during pregame activities. A total of 56 families have been recognized with the program.

To choose families, the Packers and WPS Health Insurance are asking interested families, or friends of eligible families, to submit an essay, 500 words or less, on why a particular fan should be saluted. Essays can be sent to: Operation Fan Mail, P.O. Box 10628, Green Bay, WI, 54307-0628. Essays also can be submitted to the Packers online at http://nfl.packers.com/gameday/gameday_promotions/operation_fan_mail.

Families intended for recognition are those that have a member serving on active duty. The family member can be a spouse, mother, father, son, daughter or sibling.

In addition to being recognized on-field prior to the game, selected families will receive four tickets to the game and a care package from WPS.
