Dom Capers addresses defense's failures in loss to Eagles

Posted Nov 11, 2013

Tom Clements comments on Scott Tolzien, Packers offense

GREEN BAY—What they knew did, in fact, hurt them.

“The most disappointing thing is they hit three balls over the top of us for touchdowns. The biggest issue we had were the big plays,” Packers Defensive Coordinator Dom Capers said, just three days after issuing a pregame warning that the Eagles lead the league in big plays.

Touchdown passes of 55, 45 and 32 yards represented 132 of the Eagles’ 211 yards passing, and 21 points in the Eagles’ 27-13 win over the Packers on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Monday’s postmortem for Capers was all too familiar; it included regret for a fourth-quarter meltdown that had Head Coach Mike McCarthy on edge in his postgame press conference on Sunday. McCarthy referred to it as a “recurring situation.” In this case, it referred to a game-ending Eagles drive that killed the final 9:32 of the clock.

“We’ve certainly tried to address it,” Capers said of his unit’s fourth-quarter failures. The Packers have been outscored in the fourth quarter this season, 83-46. It is the only quarter they’ve been outscored.

“We had one third down when we had a chance to get off the field and missed the tackle,” Capers said. “We had people in position and (Eagles running back LeSean McCoy) juked us and made us miss. Sometimes we had people in perfect position and he made us miss because he’s a skilled guy.”

McCoy rushed for 155 yards on Sunday and leads the league in rushing with 932 yards through 10 games.

Packers Offensive Coordinator Tom Clements praised the play of quarterback Scott Tolzien, who replaced starter Seneca Wallace after Wallace sustained a groin injury in the first drive of the game. Tolzien was playing in his first regular season game.

“He didn’t have many reps in practice. The bulk of the plays he executed yesterday were probably the first time he’s ever run them,” Clements said.

McCarthy confirmed the Packers had worked out Matt Flynn on Monday. Flynn left the Packers for Seattle in free agency two years ago, after setting the Packers’ all-time record for yards passing in a game.

“It’s still the same terminology and the same basic plays,” Clements said when asked if the Packers’ current offense resembles that which Flynn ran in 2011.

Clements’ offense dominated Sunday’s stats: nine minutes more time of possession and 75 plays to the Eagles’ 58. The Packers were able only to manage two field goals, however, from the red zone.

“We had a 17-play drive and didn’t get anything out of it,” Clements said of Tolzien’s best drive of the day, which ended on third-and-three from the Eagles’ 5-yard line when Tolzien was intercepted in the end zone.

Kicker Mason Crosby missed on field goal attempts of 53 and 42 yards.

“The 53-yarder, I thought he put a poor swing on it. On the 42-yarder, he misjudged the wind,” Special Teams Coordinator Shawn Slocum said.
