Goettl Named Coach Of The Week

Posted Nov 10, 2010

The first season head coach led the Tigers to a 21-14 victory last Saturday during the third round of the WIAA playoffs

Denny Goettl of Marshfield High School has been named Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday.

Goettl, in his first season as the head coach of the Division 2 program, led the Tigers to a 21-14 victory over No. 3-seeded Menomonie last Saturday during the third round of the WIAA playoffs. The victory marks the Tigers’ second win over a higher seeded opponent in the 2010 playoffs. Marshfield defeated No. 1-seeded La Crosse Logan in the opening round, 7-6.

“We went through some ups and downs this year,” Goettl said. “We have a brand new staff and a team without many seniors who had experience playing the year before, and now we’re really starting to mold together here at the end of the season.”

A native of Stanley, Wis., Goettl played football at Stanley-Boyd (Wis.) High School for head coach Jim Brinker. Upon graduating in 1988, he played quarterback at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse for coaches Larry Terry and Roger Harring. After spending two years playing football in Bologna, Italy, Goettl returned to the United States and was hired as an offensive coordinator at Marshfield High School, before ultimately being promoted to his current position in 2010. Goettl is also a math teacher at Marshfield High School.

Goettl and his staff oversee a program of 168 players, including a varsity roster of 83. He is assisted by Kris Berg, Dean Bryant, Chris Fischer, Paul Foegen, Randy Hartwig, Scott Klein, Jerry Littmann, Len Luedtke Jr., Jim McDonald, A.J. Rasmussen, and Ben Will.

Goettl and his wife, Marie, have two sons, Andy and Joey.

The Packers will recognize one outstanding high school coach as their 'Coach of the Week' winner during the 2010 high school football season. Winners are awarded several items and privileges, including a $1,000 donation to the school's football program from the Green Bay Packers and the NFL, as well as recognition of the award on packers.com.

Nominations for Coach of the Week should be submitted by 9 a.m. every Monday to Tim Schroeder, youth football coordinator, at coachoftheweek@packers.com (e-mail) or by fax at (920) 569-7302. Please include the nominee's name, address, school, phone number, and reason he/she is deserving of the award.
