Holy Family School in Brillion wins the Packers' 'Play 60 Challenege'

Posted Mar 8, 2013

School nearly tripled the amount of minutes set as the Play 60 goal

Holy Family School (Brillion, Wis.) was announced on Friday as the winner of the ‘Play 60 Challenge,’ a physical fitness program from the Green Bay Packers, American Heart Association, Bellin Health and WPS Health Insurance.

The month-long program challenged the students to get active and play for at least 60 minutes each day, with the activities able to be broken up and performed either in or out of school. The students tracked their daily totals on classroom scoreboards. Some schools had a competition between participating grades and the winning classes received prizes. Other schools had teachers join the challenge and compete against the students.

Holy Family School led the way with an average of 4,585 minutes per student, which averaged out to 163.7 minutes per day. The other top four schools were Fox View Intermediate School, De Pere (4,452 minutes per student/159 minutes a day); St. Mary Catholic School, Portage (4,300.8/153.6); and Rock Ledge Elementary School, Seymour (3,917.2/139.9).

Overall, more than 1,800 students logged 6,520,922 minutes, which came to an average of 124.11 minutes per student per day, more than double the amount of the Play 60 program’s goal.

The top four schools Holy Family, Fox View, St. Mary Catholic and Rock Ledge, received US Games gift certificates (1st-$700, 2nd-$600, 3rd-$500, 4th-$400) to be used to purchase gym equipment.

Spooner Middle School was the recipient of the most improved award during the final two weeks of the challenge, and received a $300 gift certificate to US Games for that recognition.

In addition to the US Games gift certificate, first place winner Holy Family School will receive a trip to Lambeau Field which includes a stadium tour, Hall of Fame passes and a chance to meet a Packers player. The date of the visit is yet to be determined.

The other Wisconsin schools that participated were Black Creek Elementary/Middle School, Black Creek; Denmark Elementary School, Denmark; Good Shepherd Lutheran School, West Bend; Greenfield Bilingual School, Milwaukee; Maple Dale Middle School, River Hills; and Seymour Middle School, Seymour.

The program supports the NFL’s Play 60 program, a youth health and fitness campaign focused on making the next generation of kids the most active and healthy. More than 180 Wisconsin schools have participated in Play 60 programs since 2007.
