Darrin Kuehn, head coach of the Markesan Hornets, has been selected as the Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week for Week 2, the Packers announced today.
The Hornets have started the season 3-0 after besting Horicon High School in Week 3. The Hornets beat the Wisconsin Heights Vanguards by a score of 34-20 in Week 2. Kuehn's team beat Waterloo, 40-0, in Week 1.
Kuehn has been the head coach of Markesan since 1998. He served as the defensive coordinator in 1997 before being named the head coach. Markesan is a Division 5 school with 26 varsity players and five assistant coaches.
"I coach for the values that this game teaches young men," said Kuehn. "I'm honored to be recognized."
Kuehn is a 1992 graduate of Markesan, where he played football and was coached by Pete James. James continues to teach at MHS. Kuehn also was on the wrestling and track and field teams as a prep.
Upon completion of his coursework at Markesan, he enrolled at Ripon College, playing football for the Red Hawks under the guidance of Ron Ernst. Kuehn graduated from Ripon in 1996. He has served in the U.S. Marine Corps as well.
Kuehn and his wife, Erin, have a four-month-old son, Jackson. He also works as the store director for Festival Foods in De Pere, Wis., commuting three hours round trip six days a week the last two seasons just to coach at Markesan.
"These are dedicated young men who love the game and play for one another and I am honored to coach them," said Kuehn.
The Packers will recognize one outstanding high school coach as their Coach of the Week winner during the 2004 high school football season. As a Coach of the Week winner, Kuehn and future recipients will be awarded several items and privileges, including a $1,000 donation to the school's football program from the Green Bay Packers and the NFL, as well as recognition of the award on www.NFLHS.com, the NFL's high school football Web site.
