Platteville's Scott Statz Named Packers H.S. Coach Of The Week

Scott Statz, head coach of the Platteville Hillmen, has been selected as the Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week for Week 4, the Packers announced Saturday.

The Hillmen have started the season 3-1after besting Prairie du Chien in Week 4 by a score of 42-14. The Hillmen beat Lancaster, 44-32, in Week 3, blanked Barron , 26-0, in Week 2 but lost to non-conference opponent, Darlington, 48-32, in Week 1.

Statz has been the head coach of Platteville since 2001. Under his guidance, the Hillmen made the playoffs in 2003 for the first time since 1996, finishing the season 7-3. He has 66 total players in his program, with 43 on the varsity roster. Statz has seven assistant coaches.

“This is a great honor for the school, community, players and coaches,” said Statz. Anytime honors are given out it is a result of a collective group of people committed to one goal.”

He served as an assistant coach at Waunakee, Holmen and DeForest High Schools before becoming the head coach at Lodi from 1995-2000. At Waunakee he coached with Pat Rice, who is coaching today. Statz has been an English teacher for 11 years.

Statz is a 1987 graduate of Waunakee High School, where he was coached by WFCA Hall of Fame member, Gayle Quinn. He also played basketball and baseball.

Upon completion of his coursework at Waunakee, he enrolled at UW-Madison before transferring to UW-La Crosse. Statz graduated in 1993.

Statz and his wife, Julie, have a four-year-old daughter, Nicole.

The Packers will recognize one outstanding high school coach as their ‘Coach of the Week’ winner during the 2004 high school football season. As a Coach of the Week winner, Statz and future recipients will be awarded several items and privileges, including a $1,000 donation to the school’s football program from the Green Bay Packers and the NFL, as well as recognition of the award on www.NFLHS.com, the NFL’s high school football Web site.
