Rib Lake-Prentice's Shoup, Weiss Named Packers High School Coaches Of The Week

Posted Oct 3, 2003

Jerry Shoup and Kevin Weiss, co-head coaches of the Rib Lake-Prentice Hawks, have been selected as the Green Bay Packers High School Coaches

of the Week for Week 4, the Packers announced Friday.

The Hawks are off to a 3-2 start, the best in school history, and have won their last 3 games. The team has won 7 of its last 9 games. Last week, Rib Lake-Prentice bested Auburndale 20-6. The varsity team has 32 players with 4 assistant coaches.

Shoup began coaching for Rib Lake-Prentice in 1992, teaching and based out of Prentice High School. Three seasons ago, the co-op program opted to add Weiss, already a football assistant at Rib Lake, as a co-head coach for purposes of organization between schools.

Shoup began his coaching career at Lakeland College from 1985-89, where he himself played football for Monte Cater. He has been coaching at Prentice since 1992 and also coaches JV basketball. Shoup teaches social studies and special education.

Weiss started coaching cross country/track in 1980 at Rib Lake. He played college football at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He became an assistant coach for the school in 1998 before moving into his current role. Weiss teaches art.

Neither coach views having a co-op team as a negative. In fact, the interactions between the two schools have provided more opportunity to increase relationships.

"Once we get to know each other, it's just a regular team," Weiss said. "We consider ourselves one team and that's what we work from."

Both coaches have worked with other sports, but Shoup sees something special about football.

"I coach other sports and I really think the relationships you develop in football are tighter because you're so much more dependent on each other," Shoup said, "Having the opportunity to work with these kids is something special."

The Packers will recognize one outstanding high school coach as their Coach of the Week winner during the 2003 high school football season.

As Coach of the Week winners, Shoup and Weiss and future recipients will be awarded several items and privileges, including a $1,000 donation to the school's football program from the Green Bay Packers and the NFL, as well as recognition of the award on www.NFLHS.com, the NFL's high school football website.

Nominations for Coach of the Week should be submitted by 9 a.m. every Monday to Cathy A. Dworak, Manager of Community Relations, at coachoftheweek@packers.com (e-mail) or by fax at (920) 490-5937.

Please include the nominee's name, address, school, phone number, and reason he/she is deserving of the award.
