Wausau East High School's Synold Named Green Bay Packers High School Coach Of The Week

Posted Sep 30, 2002

Jack Synold, head coach of the Wausau East Lumberjacks, has been selected as the Green Bay Packers' Motorola High School Coach of the Week the Packers announced today.

This year is Synold's seventh as head coach, after serving as an assistant coach for the Lumberjacks from 1991-95. Synold, a business teacher at Wausau East (1264 students), has also served as the head coach at Carthage College (1987-90), an assistant coach at Menomonee Falls High School (1984-86) and as an assistant coach at Menomonee Falls North (1972-83). This is his 31st year in coaching.

Last Friday the 'Jacks defeated Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln 35-7. Currently 4-1 and ranked eighth in Division 2 polls, the team of 47 players will travel to Schofield this Friday to take on sixth-ranked D.C. Everest High School.

Born in Milwaukee, Synold graduated from Dominican High School in Whitefish Bay (Wis.) in 1968, where he played varsity basketball, as well as varsity football, under coach Jeff Messerknecht. After graduation, Synold went on to play four years at tight end for UW-Whitewater where he graduated in 1972. He is married to Ellen, and the couple has a daughter, Karin.

"This award recognizes the kids and how our program is run," said Synold. "The reason I coach is the interaction that I have with them, and the positive effect that football has on their lives."

The Packers will recognize one outstanding high school coach as their Coach of the Week winner during the 2002 high school football season. As a Coach of the Week winner, Synold, and future recipients will be awarded several items and privileges, including a $1,000 donation to the school’s football program from the Green Bay Packers, the Green Bay Packers Foundation and the NFL, as well as recognition of the award on www.nflhs.com, the NFL's high school football website.

Last week's recipient was Mark Maloney of McDonnell Central High School.

Nominations for Coach of the Week should be submitted by 9 a.m. every Monday to Cathy A. Dworak, Manager of Community Relations, at coachoftheweek@packers.com (e-mail) or by fax at (920) 490-5937. Please include the nominee's name, address, school, phone number, and reason he/she is deserving of the award.
