Aaron Rodgers places eighth in celebrity golf tourney

Packers QB takes second among active athletes, behind only NBA star Steph Curry

Aaron Rodgers suggested in the spring that he might not be playing as much golf in the offseason as he has in the past.

But that didn’t stop the Packers QB from turning in a strong showing at the annual American Century Championship near Lake Tahoe, a celebrity event he competes in every year.

Rodgers placed eighth in the three-round tournament and second among active professional athletes behind Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry.

The event employed a modified Stableford scoring system, which awarded players one point for each par, three for birdie and six for eagle. Players got zero points for a bogey and minus-two for a double bogey or worse.

Rodgers had only one double bogey in the entire tournament and shot 10-over par based on conventional scoring – a 74 followed by two 76s.

Curry and Rodgers had some fun on the course when paired together for the first day, with Curry making a sliding catch of a Rodgers pass to entertain the fans in attendance.

Curry ended up placing fourth, scoring an eagle on the final hole Sunday. Former Major League Baseball pitcher Mark Mulder won the event for the third straight year. Another former pitcher, Derek Lowe, placed second, and former tennis player Mardy Fish took third.

Former Packers players who competed included wide receiver Sterling Sharpe, cornerback Charles Woodson, linebacker A.J. Hawk, and backup QBs Jim McMahon and Doug Pederson, the current Philadelphia Eagles head coach. Sharpe had the top performance of that bunch, finishing in a tie for 20th.
