Packers QB honored with "Best NFL Player" and "Best Play" awards

GREEN BAY – He did it again.

After winning last year’s ESPY award for “Best Play” for his game-winning 61-yard Hail Mary pass to tight end Richard Rodgers, Aaron Rodgers again took home the award at Wednesday night’s event in Los Angeles.

Rodgers won this year’s award for his 35-yard sideline completion to former Packers tight end Jared Cook on third-and-20 in last January’s NFC Divisional playoff game in Dallas.

The connection set up kicker Mason Crosby’s game-winning 51-yard field goal, propelling the Packers to their second NFC title game in three years with the 34-31 victory.

Earlier in the night, Rodgers also was honored with the ESPY award for “Best NFL Player” for the fourth time in seven years.

Rodgers led the league in 2016 with 40 touchdown passes, ranked fourth in passing yards (4,428) and passer rating (104.2), and set a single-season franchise record with 401 completions.

Rodgers is the first player to win the award four times in the ESPY’s 25-year history. He previously was honored in 2011, 2012 and 2015.

Fans were able to cast their vote online for both awards leading up to Wednesday’s awards show.

The other nominees for “Best NFL Player” included New England QB Tom Brady, Dallas RB Ezekiel Elliott, Oakland LB Khalil Mack and Atlanta QB Matt Ryan.
