Packers announce coaching staff changes

Packers have parted ways with TE coach Jerry Fontenot and RB coach Sam Gash

The Green Bay Packers have parted ways with tight ends coach Jerry Fontenot and running backs coach Sam Gash, Head Coach Mike McCarthy announced Tuesday.

Fontenot originally joined the Packers in the summer of 2006 as a coaching intern and remained with the team that season as an offensive assistant. Before being named the tight ends coach in 2012, he was the running backs coach in 2011 and the assistant offensive line coach from 2007-10. In Fontenot’s 10 seasons as a member of the Packers coaching staff, Green Bay finished in the top 10 in the NFL in total offense and scoring eight times. Over the past two seasons, he has helped in the development of 2014 third-round draft pick Richard Rodgers, who tied Bubba Franks for the most receiving touchdowns (10) by a Packers tight end in the first two seasons of his career. Rodgers also recorded 58 receptions this past season, becoming just the fourth Green Bay tight end to reach 55 receptions in one season.

“It’s been a pleasure to work with Jerry for the past 10 seasons,” said McCarthy. “He has given a lot to this organization and has been a big part of our success. We wish Jerry, Stephanie and their family all the best moving forward.”

Gash joined the Packers as running backs coach in 2014. In his first season, he helped Eddie Lacy rank No. 7 in the NFL with 1,139 rushing yards and No. 3 in the league with nine rushing touchdowns. This past season, Green Bay’s rushing attack ranked No. 12 in the NFL (115.6 yards per game) and tied for No. 4 in the league by recording eight games with 120-plus rushing yards.

“I would like to thank Sam for his contributions to the team over the past two seasons,” said McCarthy. “We hope for the best for Sam, Alicia and their family in the future.”
