Packers sign WR Nelson to contract extension

Posted Jul 26, 2014

The signing was announced Saturday by Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations.

The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Jordy Nelson to a contract extension. The signing was announced Saturday by Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations.

Nelson, who was drafted out of Kansas State in the second round (No. 36 overall) by the Packers with the first of their three second-round selections in 2008, has eclipsed 65 receptions and 1,200 yards receiving in two of the last three seasons (2011, 2013).

“Jordy’s hard work and dedication has made him a good player, teammate and a core member of this team. We are pleased to come to an agreement that will extend his Packers career,” Thompson said.

In 2013, Nelson posted career highs with 85 receptions for 1,314 yards (15.5 avg.), becoming just the fourth player in franchise history to register at least 85 receptions and 1,300 receiving yards in the same season. He ranks No. 6 in the league with 30 touchdown receptions since 2011 and No. 5 in the NFL (min. 125 receptions) over that span with a 16.4-yard receiving average.

Nelson recorded 15 touchdown receptions in 2011, joining Sterling Sharpe (18 in 1994) and Don Hutson (17 in 1942) as the only Packers to reach that mark in a single season. He ranks No. 11 in franchise history in receiving yards (4,590), No. 15 in receptions (302) and No. 12 in receiving touchdowns (36). Nelson is tied for No. 2 among active NFL players with three career touchdown receptions of 80-plus yards.
