Masthay named 'NFC Special Teams Player of the Week'

Posted Dec 7, 2011

Packers punter Tim Masthay must like kicking in MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

For the second time in two years playing there, Masthay put together a performance worthy of “NFC Special Teams Player of the Week” honors.

Against the Giants this past Sunday, Masthay placed four of five punts inside the New York 20-yard line. He averaged 44.2 yards both gross and net on five punts, four of which forced the Giants to start drives on their 14-, 14-, 1-, and 13-yard lines.

New York had no punt-return yards in the game, as three of Masthay’s punts were fair-caught and two others were downed. His long was a 55-yarder from his own 20 that was fair-caught at the New York 25.

Masthay’s previous weekly special-teams award came last season on the road against the Jets in Week 8. In that game, he put five punts inside the 20.

Last Sunday, the Giants scored only once on their five drives following a Masthay punt, when they gained 68 yards after beginning on their own 1 and kicked a field goal.
