Inside Slant: Tramon Williams

Posted Dec 13, 2011

Tramon Williams has traveled a tangled path to NFL success, his career a story of triumph through perseverance. No college scholarship, undrafted, released, the practice squad, ace special teamer and finally, a starter – none of those challenges stopped Williams from evolving into a Pro Bowl cornerback and ultimately a key figure in the Packers’ run to Super Bowl XLV.

Not unlike the Robert Frost poem, taking the road less traveled has made all the difference. Williams, who has 20 career interceptions, is a product of his struggle to make it. He attended Louisiana Tech based on its academic program and walked on to the football team. He was released by the Texans in 2006 and wasn’t signed to the Packers’ practice squad until nearly three months later.

In a league that puts a premium on cornerbacks, Williams’ rapid development from street free agent to starter was like found money for Green Bay. His hard work also has a talented foundation – Williams has quick feet, tremendous leaping ability and is a sturdy 190 pounds. However, Williams is known for his study habits and the energy he brings to practice, and he showed his grit earlier this season by playing several weeks with a shoulder injury.

In this installment of Inside Slant, Williams talks about what it took to overcome the odds, reflects on last season and gives insight on how he breaks down opposing wide receivers.
