SOUTHERN DOOR'S CLAFLIN NAMED GREEN BAY PACKERS HIGH SCHOOL COACH OF THE WEEK
Brent Claflin, head coach at Southern Door High School, has been selected the Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week.
Claflin, who is in his eighth year as head coach at Southern Door, led the Eagles to a 35-9 win over Oconto Falls High School last weekend. The win assured Southern Door, 6-0 in the Packerland Conference and 7-1 overall, a tie for its first conference title since 1992. The Eagles, who two years ago finished the season 0-7, will be making their sixth appearance in the WIAA playoffs in eight years.
Claflin earned a degree in elementary education human development from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and is currently teaching fifth grade in the Southern Door School District. A graduate of Southern Door High School, Claflin played center and defensive lineman for coach Rich Fahey, now an assistant of Claflin's.
The Coach of the Week Program aids in the development of youth football, giving high school coaches the recognition they deserve. Each week during the 1997 high school football season, the Green Bay Packers will select one high school coach as the Coach of the Week winner. Each recipient receives several items and privileges, including the award, a $500 donation to the school's football program from NFL Charities and Play Football t-shirts for all the team's coaches and players.
The Green Bay Packers are being assisted by WBAY-TV, the Green Bay Press Gazette and WNFL Radio in nominating coaches each week and saluting the winning coach.
