PACKERS WAIVE CLAVELLE, SIGN DEFENSIVE LINEMAN GERALD WILLIAMS

The Green Bay Packers have placed defensive end Shannon Clavelle on waivers and signed veteran defensive lineman Gerald Williams to replace him on the team's 53 man active roster, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.

A 12-year veteran, the 34 year-old Williams had started the first 5 games of the season at defensive end for the Carolina Panthers. Subsequently inactive for Game 6, he was placed on waivers October 17, prior to Carolina's seventh game last weekend.

The 6-foot-3, 302-pound Auburn alumnus had started 25 of 38 games for the Panthers over the past three years, plus their two playoff games following the 1996 season. A starter in 14 of 16 regular-season games last season, he ranked second among Carolina defensive linemen with 49 tackles (28 solo) from his right defensive end position.

Originally a second round draft selection of the Steelers in 1986, he started 92 of a possible 120 games for Pittsburgh over a 9-year span (1986-1994) before being signed by Carolina as an unrestricted free agent on March 28, 1995.

A versatile performer who can play every position along the defensive line in the 3-4 alignment, he has appeared in 157 games -- with 121 starts -- over his NFL career and amassed 420 tackles, 305 of them unassisted. He also has posted 25.5 quarterback sacks and been credited with 13 passes defensed.

Williams, who has been assigned jersey number 96, joined the Packers on the practice field today.

Clavelle, a third-year pro from the University of Colorado, had played in 6 of 7 games (he was inactive for the Packers' most recent game, at Chicago October 12) and had posted one assisted tackle overall.

Originally drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 1995 (a sixth-round selection), he had been signed for the Packers' practice squad on September 15 of the '95 season following his release by the Bills.

Signed to the active roster October 25, he was active for one regular season game and later played in the Packers' wild card playoff game against Atlanta (December 31). He appeared in 8 games in 1996, registering 2 assisted tackles and a half-quarterback sack.
