PACKERS SIGN CHRIS McCOY, NAVY QUARTERBACK, AS A RUNNING BACK
posted 6/2/98
The Green Bay Packers have signed Navy's Chris McCoy, a highly productive runner as an option quarterback at Navy, as a free agent, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.
Projected as a running back with the Packers, the 5-10, 195-pound McCoy closed out his collegiate career as the second-ranking rusher on Navy's all-time list with 3,401 yards on 682 attempts (a 5.0-yard average), a total eclipsed in the Naval Academy's football history only by Napoleon McCallum (1981-85), who gained 4,179 yards carrying the football.
McCoy's 43 rushing touchdowns also broke Navy's career record of 31, set by McCallum.
Dee Dowis of Air Force, who accumulated 3,612 yards during his college career (1986-89) is the only quarterback in NCAA history to have rushed for more yards in a career than McCoy.
The latter, a 22-year-old Morris, Ga., native, rolled up 1,370 yards on the ground in 246 carries as a senior (5.6-yard average) and subsequently added to his rushing credentials by winning "Most Valuable Player" honors in the 1998 Blue-Gray Game in January, rushing 6 times for 75 yards. He also made 3 pass receptions for 18 yards.
At Navy, he amassed 5,887 yards of total offense over his collegiate career, including 2,486 yards passing on 152 completions in 323 attempts, good for 21 touchdowns, with 17 interceptions.
"Chris McCoy was a very good athlete in college," said Ted Thompson, the Packers' director of player personnel, adding, "we've had a close eye on him throughout his career."
McCoy, who has been assigned jersey number 41, will join the Packers on the practice field Wednesday morning.
As was the case previously with Packers defensive tackle Bob Kuberski, another former Middie, McCoy has a service commitment to honor. He "owes" the Navy two years and his availability for the season ahead thus remains to be determined.
Wolf also announced that Delonte Perkins of Robert Morris, a rookie wide receiver, has been placed on waivers.
