The Green Bay Packers have signed fullback Edwin Watson of Purdue, their seventh and last selection in this year's National Football League draft, to a two-year contract, Vice President of Administration/Chief Financial Officer Michael R. Reinfeldt announced today.

Watson, who has been participating in the team's current and final minicamp, ranks fourth on Purdue's career-rushing list (behind Scott Dierking, Otis Armstrong and Mike Alstott) with 2,520 yards. In 1997, his final season for the Boilermakers, he rushed for 927 yards - an imposing 5.3 yards per attempt - and 11 touchdowns.

A classic fullback-type at 6-0 and 225 pounds, Watson once rushed for 229 yards in a game, (against North Carolina State), a career-high and the fourth-best single game in the school's history. He had five career 100-yard rushing games.

He also scored 25 rushing touchdowns over his career, fifth-highest total in school history, and demonstrated breakaway talents, rushing for touchdowns of 75, 63 and 48 yards.

Watson is the first of the Packers' 1998 draft selections to be signed.
