The Green Bay Packers today announced that Robert Brooks is the 1998 "Sprint Packers Man of the Year," and a national finalist for the prestigious Sprint NFL Man of the Year award to be presented at Super Bowl XXXIII in South Florida.
Brooks was elected by area fourth and fifth graders, a local blue-ribbon community panel and the Packers organization, based on his interest and active participation in civic and charitable endeavors. The award is the only NFL-sponsored honor that recognizes a player's community service as well as excellence on the field.
For the first time in the 27-year-old history of the prestigious NFL Man of the Year Award, children had a significant role in selecting the Sprint NFL Man of the Year finalists for all 30 NFL teams. Fourth- and fifth-grade students from the Green Bay area were encouraged to research on- and off-field contributions of two Sprint Packers Man of the Year candidates submitted by the Packers, which included Brett Favre, LeRoy Butler and Robert Brooks.
"I am honored to be chosen for this award," said Brooks. "It's especially meaningful because the kids and the community participated in the voting. To be recognized as a good role model is a great compliment."
As part of the "Sprint NFL Good Sports Writing Program," teachers gave students the opportunity to write about sportsmanship and role models and asked them to relate it to one of the three players. Journalists judged the essays and the winning student will be honored with Brooks as the "Sprint Packers Good Sport Winner."
Michelle Glaunert of Glen Park Elementary in New Berlin, WI earned the honor to represent the Packers with her essay. In the essay, Glaunert explains the importance of good sportsmanship and its impact. "By doing all these charities, Robert helps our community raise money for people who really need the help," she writes. " Robert sets a good example for all ball players by helping our town on and off the field."
Glaunert will present Brooks with the "Sprint Packers Man of the Year" award. In addition, she will receive tickets to a Packers home game and Sprint will donate $1,000 in cash to Glen Park Elementary to further education.
If selected as one of the four national student finalists, Glaunert will earn a trip to Super Bowl XXXIII in Miami to serve as part of a national blue ribbon panel that elects the Sprint NFL Man of the Year. The panel will include NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, Sprint Chairman and CEO William T. Esrey, Sports Illustrated NFL Writer Peter King, 1997 winner Troy Aikman, and NFL greats John Mackey, Frank Gifford and former Senator Jack Kemp.
