PACKERS PROMOTE LINEBACKER NELSON TO ACTIVE ROSTER, RELEASE GALBRAITH

posted 12/29/98

The Green Bay Packers have elevated linebacker Jim Nelson from the practice squad to the 53-player active roster, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.

Tight end Scott Galbraith was placed on waivers to make room for Nelson on the roster, Wolf said.

The 6-1, 235-pound Nelson, currently in his second stint with the Packers this season, had been a member of the practice squad since September 14. He previously had joined Green Bay for the first time on July 17, after being placed on waivers by the San Francisco 49ers, and played in four preseason games before being waived August 25.

Nelson originally had been signed by the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on April 24, 1998.

The 23-year-old Riverside, Calif., native, who has been assigned jersey number 50, was a four-year starter at Penn State as a collegian, amassing 254 tackles and 8 sacks as a Nittany Lion while starting 37 consecutive games.

Galbraith, a nine-year NFL veteran, had been signed as a free agent December 22.
