Sherman Lewis, an integral member of the Green Bay Packers' coaching staff for the past seven seasons as offensive coordinator, will continue to serve in that role under new head coach Ray Rhodes, Rhodes announced today.

Under Lewis' direction, the Green Bay offense has maintained a high standard of play, ranking among the top ten in the NFL (on a yardage basis) over the last five years - ninth in 1994, seventh in 1995, fifth in 1996, fourth in 1997 and fifth in 1998 - and posting better than 400 points in each of the past four years.

The Packers' passing offense has been the league's third-best in three of the last four seasons, the exception being 1996, when it ranked fifth. Offensive productivity reached its high point in that '96 season, however, as Green Bay amassed a club-record 456 points to lead the NFL in points for the first time in 34 years en route to capturing Super Bowl XXXI.

During his coaching career, Lewis has been to five Super Bowls, winning four - Super Bowls XXXI and XXXII with Green Bay and earlier Super Bowls XIX, XXIII and XXIV as a member of the San Francisco 49ers' coaching staff from 1983-91. He has been to the playoffs in 14 of his 16 seasons as a pro coach, including six of his seven years with the Packers.

Lewis, 56, began his coaching career at his alma mater, Michigan State, in 1969, serving the Spartans through the 1982 season, after which he joined the 49ers' staff.
