PACKERS SIGN PAT IVEY, FREE AGENT DEFENSIVE END; PUT WILLIG ON WAIVERS
posted 02/24/99
The Green Bay Packers have signed defensive end Pat Ivey as a free agent, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.
Ivey, 6-4 and 277 pounds, originally signed with San Diego in 1996 and spent the '96 season on the Chargers' practice squad. He returned to training camp with San Diego in 1997, was placed on waivers August 18 and was out of football during the regular season. He joined the Denver Broncos in 1998, was played on waivers July 28 and spent the balance of the year out of football.
The 26-year-old Detroit native, an all-state selection as a prep at the Motor City's Cass Tech High School, was named to the National Strength and Conditioning Association All-America as a senior in 1995 after lifting 470 pounds in the bench press and 755 pounds in the squat.
Wolf also announced that veteran offensive tackle Matt Willig has been placed on waivers. Willig, 6-7 and 315 pounds, saw action in all 16 regular-season games last season as Green Bay's "swing" tackle, including service at both left and right tackle during the Packers' October 25 game against Baltimore. A seven-year veteran, the former USC athlete had spent his first four seasons with the New York Jets (1992-95) and the 1996 and 1997 campaigns with the Atlanta Falcons before signing with the Packers as an unrestricted free agent in 1998.
