Statement From Bob Harlan on Lambeau Field Plans

posted 02/02/99

(There were a number of stories over the weekend about Packer plans for Lambeau Field and the possibility of using tax dollars to make the stadium safer for fans. The following is a statement by Packers President Bob Harlan on the Packers' planning for Lambeau Field.)

The Packers are exploring a number of options for Lambeau Field. At this point we've made only one decision: We want to play football in Lambeau well into the next century. It will be some time before we know the details of any improvements to the stadium, much less the cost, or how it will be financed.

One of the issues we need to address is how to make the stadium more handicap-accessible under the American with Disabilities Act. The concourse also needs work to assure fan safety during inclement weather, and there are other possible infrastructure issues that need to be studied.

Our timetable calls for us to finalize plans later this spring. With hiring replacements for staff who have moved on to Seattle, upcoming league meetings, the expansion draft by Cleveland and the regular NFL draft, there simply won't be time to complete plans before the middle of April.

When we are sure of our plans we will be excited to share our vision of Lambeau Field with Packers fans across the state. To say more at this point would be sheer speculation.

Lambeau Field is the best place in the world to play football. It is a historic treasure, the most prized tradition in football, and it must be preserved.

The Green Bay Packers are grateful for the fan and community support we've enjoyed over the decades. And we look forward to many more years of this winning partnership.
