It is now official...

Reggie White, the most honored defensive lineman in National Football League history, has formally retired from professional football.

The 37-year-old White turned in his retirement letter to Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf at the Packers' corporate offices today.

White, voted the league's "Defensive Player of the Year" following the 1998 season in which he led the National Football Conference in quarterback sacks with 16, retires as the NFL's official all-time sack leader with a career total of 192 1/2. He also retires as the Packers' career sack leader with 68 1/2.

The 14-year professional, who spent his first 8 NFL seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, closed out his playing career in the 1999 Pro Bowl at Honolulu on February 7, after being elected to the NFC squad for a league-record, 13th consecutive year.

It was the sixth time he had been selected as a member of the Packers, establishing a team record for a defensive lineman.

Perhaps the most sought-after free agent in NFL history, White signed on with the Packers on April 8, 1993, and, joining forces with quarterback Brett Favre, subsequently helped lead Green Bay to victory over New England in Super Bowl XXXI at New Orleans in January of 1997.
