Sean Landeta

The Philadelphia Eagles today announced that they have agreed to terms on a three-year deal with punter Sean Landeta. As is club policy, terms of the deal were not announced.

"What Sean brings us is years of experience," said head coach Andy Reid. "He also brings with him a very positive attitude towards this team and, in particular, toward Philadelphia, having been here with the Stars during their championship years in the USFL. He's obviously a championship-caliber punter and someone I feel very comfortable about having take over our punting chores."

The 37-year old Landeta is entering his 15th NFL season after spending the 1998 campaign in Green Bay, where he set team single-season records with a 37.1-yard net punting average and 30 punts inside the 20-yard line. In all, Landeta punted 65 times with a 42.9 yard average. During his career, Landeta has booted 926 punts for 40,357 yards and a 43.6-yard average that ranks 12th on the NFL's all-time list. Landeta has led the NFC in punting average four times during his career while logging a better than 2-to-1 ratio on punts inside the 20 (261) vs. touchbacks (119).

Landeta will be embarking on his second tour of duty in Philadelphia. Between 1983-85, Landeta helped the Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars win two United States Football League championships. Following his three-year stint with the Stars, Landeta was signed as a free agent by the New York Giants and went on to spend nine seasons with the NFC East club. While with the Giants, Landeta earned Super Bowl championship rings following the 1986 and 1990 seasons. After being released by the Giants midway through the '93 campaign, Landeta was quickly signed by the Los Angeles Rams. He then spent three-plus seasons with that club before joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1997 and the Packers this past season.

"Philadelphia is the place I started my pro career and I've certainly got a lot of fond memories of the city," said Landeta. "The Eagles certainly made me feel wanted. Obviously I know I have to now come in and perform at the high level that Andy Reid expects. It's something I'm really looking forward to. I'm anxious to be a part of things when he gets this team turned around."

A native of Towson, MD, Landeta played collegiately at Towson State.
