APPLETON - Mel Knoke, the lifelong Green Bay Packers fan named as the first member of the Green Bay Packer Fan Hall of Fame, died Friday - the day after special ceremonies were held for him at an Appleton hospital.

Knoke, 91, was scheduled to be honored Saturday night when the Packers held their Hall of Fame induction banquet.

Knoke had been elected by other fans to be the first hall-of-fame fan.

With his heart condition worsening earlier in the week, the ceremony was moved up to Thursday evening, at a conference room bedecked with Packer memorabilia at Appleton Medical Center.

About 75 friends and relatives attended.

Presented with his Hall of Fame plaque, Knoke made a robust cry of "I feel the power," to the delight of the crowd, said John Gillespie, a spokesman for United Health, which operates the hospital.

It's the line that Knoke made famous in an NFL television commercial, when he announced to the world, "I'm Mel Knoke, and I feel the power."

When the crowd quieted down, Knoke thanked everyone for coming to see him, Gillespie said.

Members of the Knoke family attended the Packer Hall of Fame ceremonies Saturday.

Funeral arrangements: Visitation is today (Monday) from 4-8 p.m. at the Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N. Superior St., Appleton, WI 54911, phone 920-739-1231.

The funeral service will be held at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 930 East Florida Ave., Appleton, WI 54911, on Tuesday, March 9, at 4 p.m. There also will be visitation at the church from 2:30-4:00 p.m.
