| PANTHERS SIGN DEFENSIVE BACK RODERICK MULLEN
Carolina Panthers Press Release posted 03/09/99
The Carolina Panthers have signed unrestricted free agent defensive back Roderick Mullen, free agent running back Chris Hetherington and free agent defensive back LaMar Lyons, the team announced Monday. A versatile defensive back who can play both cornerback and safety, Mullen (6-1, 202) appeared in 38 regular season games with one start and eight postseason contests in three seasons for Green Bay, collecting 20 tackles, an interception, a fumble recovery and four passes defensed. Originally a fifth-round draft choice by the New York Giants in 1995 from Grambling State, Mullen, 26, was signed by the Packers from the Giants practice squad midway through the season and saw action in eight contests. He played in 14 games in 1996 and 16 contests, including his lone start, in 1997. Mullen spent the 1998 season on injured reserve with a dislocated shoulder. Hetherington (6-3, 249), 26, played in 36 games with one start for Indianapolis. The three-year veteran from Yale initially signed as a college free agent with Cincinnati in 1996 before being waived and signed by Indianapolis that same season. Lyons (6-3, 210), 25, was signed by Baltimore as a free agent from Oakland†s practice squad midway through the 1996 season. The University of Washington alumnus appeared in seven games for the Ravens before being waived prior to the 1998 season. Mullen is the sixth unrestricted free agent to sign with the Panthers. Carolina has also signed defensive lineman Antonio Edwards, linebacker Donta Jones, tight end/long snapper Brian Kinchen and linebacker Steve Tovar in addition to re-signing unrestricted free agent guard Anthony Redmon. courtesy Carolina Panthers |
