Kansas City Chiefs President, General Manager and CEO Carl Peterson announced on Wednesday that the club has signed linebacker Lamont Hollinquest to a two-year contract.
Hollinquest (6-3, 250), will enter his sixth NFL campaign in ¬99 after spending the past three seasons (¬96-98) with the Green Bay Packers. A native of Los Angeles, California, he originally entered the league as an eighth-round draft choice (212th overall) of the Washington Redskins in ¬93. A stellar special teams performer, Hollinquest has amassed 82 special teams stops in just 77 regular season games. On defense, he has produced 52 tackles (38 solo), two INTs for 41 yards, half a sack and five passes defensed. He owns seven career postseason appearances with the Packers, and was part of the ¬96 Green Bay squad which captured a win over New England in Super Bowl XXXII.
Last season, Hollinquest captained Green Bay's specialty units and tied for the team lead with 13 stops on the kick coverage units. In ¬97, he led the Packers with 16 specialty stops, while ranking second in that department in ¬96 with 15 special teams tackles. In his three seasons with the Packers from ¬96-98, he saw action in 46 regular season games, producing 44 special teams tackles, to go along with 24 defensive stops (20 solo), one INT for two yards and two passes defensed. He originally signed with Green Bay as a free agent on January 18, 1996.
In two seasons (¬93-94) with the Redskins, Hollinquest saw action in 31 games, producing 38 special teams stops, in addition to 28 tackles (18 solo) on defense. He also contributed one INT for 39 yards, three passes defensed and half a sack. He enjoyed his best season with the club in ¬94 when set career highs with 25 special teams stops and 19 tackles (12 solo) on defense. After playing all 16 games in ¬93, he saw action in the Redskins final 15 contests in ¬94 before being released. He subsequently signed with the Cincinnati Bengals for the final game of the ¬94 season, but did not play and was released by the club before the start of the ¬95 regular season.
A four-year letterman at the University of Southern California, Hollinquest began his career with the Trojans as a safety before making the switch to linebacker. He finished his collegiate tenure with 94 tackles, including 31 stops and 2.0 sacks as a senior. He produced a college-best 48 tackles as a junior when he split time between the linebacker and safety positions. He enrolled at USC after a stellar prep career at Pius X High School in Downey, California, where he earned all-state honors in both football and basketball.
