PACKERS SIGN PUNTER WILL BRICE, FORMER RAM, AS A FREE AGENT

posted 03/25/99

The Green Bay Packers have signed punter Will Brice, a former St. Louis Ram, as a free agent, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.

A University of Virginia alumnus and a second-year professional, the 6-foot-4, 225-pound Brice signed with the Rams as a free agent in 1997 and was their punter for the first six games of the season, averaging 41.8 yards for 41 punts, with a long of 61 yards. He also deposited six punts inside the 20-yard line.

Placed on waivers Oct. 14, 1997, he was signed by the New York Giants in February of 1998 and subsequently assigned to the Amsterdam Admirals for their NFL Europe League season. He later joined the Giants in training camp, was released in the teamis final cutdown for the regular season August 24 and was out of football for the balance of the year.

As a collegian, Brice was the first specialist in the University of Virginia's history to earn first-team All-America recognition. He averaged 42 yards per punt over his four-year varsity career, including 17 punts of 50 or more yards.

The newcomer, who has been assigned jersey number 18, will be among the more than 60 players reporting for the Packers' first 1999 minicamp next week (March 29 through April 2).

"He's got a good, strong leg," Reggie McKenzie, the team's director of pro personnel, says of the 24-year-old Lancaster, S.C., native. "He just has to get some consistency in getting it done. I think he can."
