MINICAMP UPDATE
posted 03/31/99
Morning Update - Wednesday, March 31
The Packers opened their first mini-camp under new head coach Ray Rhodes late this morning inside the Don Hutson Center. A handful of players, including safety LeRoy Butler, were held out of the one hour, forty-minute workout due to offseason surgeries, while others, like tackle John Michels (IR in '98 due to a knee injury), participated on a limited basis.
"It's good to have these guys in town," said Rhodes at the end of the practice, addressing roughly 50 members of the Wisconsin media. "We've been here working for the last three months and haven't had an opportunity to see the football team."
Former University of Wisconsin running back Brent Moss, wearing number 31, joined the team on the field today. Moss, the third-leading rusher in school history with 3,428 yards, has not been signed to a contract. Instead, the Packers have signed him to a workout waiver and will utilize this week's mini-camp as a tryout.
In other news, the Packers acknowledge that starting fullback William Henderson and the team have agreed to the basic parameters of a new contract, which is expected to be signed in the near future. Henderson, like Moss, is taking part in the mini-camp under a workout waiver, which offers him injury protection.
In other news, tight end Rod Lewis has been switched from jersey number 49 to 82. The number 82 most recently had been worn by wide receiver Brian Manning, who was moved to cornerback in the offseason and now wears 29. Jim Nelson, a free agent linebacker in 1998 who spent the majority of the year on the team's practice squad before moving to the active roster for the playoffs, has been switched to fullback and changes numbers from 50 to 39.
