Ken Herock, a veteran and widely respected NFL personnel executive, has been named vice president of personnel for the Green Bay Packers, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.
Herock, who is 57, has been in professional football for more than 35 years as a player, coach, scout and personnel official.
A native of Munhall, Pa., and a member of Oakland's 1967 Super Bowl team as a tight end from West Virginia University, Herock launched his front office career with the Raiders in 1970 as a combination personnel scout and special teams coach, after retiring as a player following the 1969 season with the Boston Patriots. In the interim, he has played a key role in the player personnel process for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons - in addition to the Raiders - prior to joining the Packers organization.
Named the Raiders' director of player personnel in 1975, he became the first director of player personnel for then-fledgling Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1976. Within three years, he helped build the Bucs into a playoff contender - one which advanced to the NFC Championship Game in 1979.
After returning to the Raiders' personnel department for a second, three-year period (1984-1986), Herock was named director of player personnel for Atlanta in 1987, remaining with the Falcons for 10 years - a period during which the players he procured included Cornelius Bennett, Bob Whitfield, Bert Emanuel, Terance Mathis and Jeff George.
He returned to the Raiders for a third tenure in 1997, subsequently leaving the Oakland organization following the 1998 season.
Earlier, as a collegian at West Virginia, Herock earned all-conference honors as both a tight end and linebacker, and since has been named to the school's Hall of Fame.
Herock and his wife, Barry, have two children, one of whom, Shaun, is a member of the Packers' college scouting staff and now will be working for his father.
